(U. 30-47) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A safety razor is described which can be disassembled and arranged into a compact unit when not in use. The razor comprises a shaving head which includes a cap member and a platform adapted to receive and hold between them a razorblade. A handle for a first end adapted for detachable mounting to the shaving head and has a slot extending lengthwise thereof from the other end. When the first end of the handle is detached from the shaving head, the head can be received within the handle slot to provide a generally flat, compact unit.
The present invention relates generally to safety razors. More particularly, it appertains to a safety razor which can be disassembled and arranged into a compact unit when not being used.
Most conventional safety razors include a shaving head permanently secured to a handle to form therewith a T-shaped unit of single piece construction. Because of this construction, problems associated with bulkiness often are encountered when it is desired to pack or carry such safety razors. For example, when included in military kits or with gear to be placed in a pack, the single piece conven tional safety razors require more space than their real volume. This is because of the particular construction of conventional safety razors, i.e., relatively wide and thin shaving head with a rod like handle extending perpendicularly from a large area surface of the shaving head. Furthermore, such conventional safety razors are not conveniently carried on the person, e.g., in the pocket of ones clothing.
With the present invention, a safety razor of special construction is provided, such construction facilitating the reduction of the safety razor to a small compact unit when not in use. More specifically, the safety razor of the present invention comprises a shaving head adapted to receive and hold a razor blade with its cutting edges exposed for shaving. A handle is detachably mounted to the shaving head and is provided with a slot adapted to receive the shaving head therein when the head is detached from the handle. By detaching and inserting the shaving head into the slot of the handle, the disassembled safety razor is arranged into a generally flat compact unit. Of course, in such a compact configuration, the safety razor will require little storage space, e.g., when packaged into a compact pack or military kit. Furthermore, because of the generally flat compact disassembled configuration of the safety razor of the present invention, it is most suitable for being carried in the pockets of clothing.
Accordingly, it is a principal object of the present invention to provide a safety razor that can be arranged in a compact configuration when not in use. More particularly, it is an object of this invention to provide a safety razor that requires a minimum of space for non-use storage. Further, it is an object of this invention to provide a safety razor that can be disassembled and arranged into a compact generally flat unit for storage. Still another object of the present invention is to provide a safety razor that may be carried conveniently in the pockets of clothing.
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of the invention which is illustrated in the drawing accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood, however, that variations in the showing made by the said drawing and description may be adopted within the scope of the invention as set forth in the claims.
FIGURE 1 is an exploded view of one embodiment of the safety razor of the present invention. FIGURE 2 illustrates the safety razor of the present invention in its disassembled form as arranged as a compact unit for storage. FIGURE 3 is an isometric view of the safety razor of the present invention assembled for use. FIGURE 4 is an illustration of the shaving head of the safety razor with its blade supporting platform removed. FIGURE 5 is a sectional view of the safety razor taken along lines 5-5 of FIGURE 3.
Considering first FIGURE 1, it is seen the safety razor 11 comprises a razor blade supporting platform 12 and a cap member 13 adapted to be mounted in covering nested relation to platform 12. In one embodiment, platform 12 and cap member 13 are generally rectangular. When assembled, platform 12 and cap member 13 define a shaving head 14, for example, as portrayed in FIGURES 3 and 5. As illustrated in the figures, platform 12 and cap member 13 are arranged to receive sandwiched therebetween a conventional generally rectangular shaped double edge razor blade 16. When safety razor 11 is assembled for shaving, razor blade 16 is clamped by cap member 13 in shaving relation against platform 12, i.e., with at least one cutting edge 17 of blade 16 extending out from an edge of cap member 13 and recessed proximate the edge of platform 12. Preferably, to facilitate the cutting of hairs or whiskers, the width of platform 12 is adjusted to be just larger than the width of blade 16 to define leading edges 18. In turn, the width of blade 16 is adjusted to be just larger than cap member 13. By construction the shaving head 14 in such a manner, as the shaving head is pressed against and drawn over the skin to be shaved, the leading edge 18 causes the hairs or whiskers to be erected for cutting by the following cutting edge 17 of blade 16.
Although a double edge type safety razor having detachable cap 13 and platform 12 members is illustrated in the accompanying figures, it is to be noted that other shaving head configurations are contemplated as being included within the scope of the invention. For example, a single edge razor blade could be sandwiched between cap 13 and platform 12 with platform 12 extending beyond cap 13 only along the edge of shaving head 14 from which the cutting edge of the single edge blade is to extend. Additionally, shaving head 14 could be constructed with cap 13 and platform 12 permanently attached by hinges at one side thereof instead of cap 13 and platform 12 being disjointed members.
In order to manipulate the safety razor and also hold shaving head 14 when not in use, a unique handle 19 is provided which is adapted to be fixed to shaving head 14. More particularly, handle 19 is provided with a slot 21 for receiving and holding therein shaving head 14. One end 22 of handle 19 is provided with fastening means 23 to secure handle 19 to shaving head 14 and define therewith a T-shape-d configuration as illustrated in FIGURE 3. As shown in the figures, fastening means 23 is a male threaded cylindrical section which is inserted through an aperture 24 centrally located in the platform 12 to thread ingly engage a threaded aperture 26 defined by cap member 13. Apertures 24 and 26 are aligned whereby cap member 13- is held in nested covering relation to platform 12 by handle 19. To insure that the razor blade 16 is held rigidly in place between cap 12 and platform 13, the threaded section of fastening means 23 terminates distal end 22 of handle 19 at a shoulder 27 and the length of the threaded section is adjusted so that cap member 12, blade 3 16, and platform 13 are drawn tightly together as handle 19 threadingly engages cap member 12.
Fastening means 23 other than a thread type fastener may be employed to secure handle 19, cap member 12 and platform 13 together. For example, end 22 of handle 19 Could be adapted with a columnar extension of reduced cross-section extending from shoulder 27 and terminating at a flared end portion of elongated rectangular crosssection. The cap member 12 and platform 13 would be provided with aligned rectangular apertures for receiving the flared end portion therethrough. The cap member 12 and platform 13 are held tightly together by inserting the flared end through the apertures and twisting handle 19 to align the rectangular cross-section of the flared end transverse to the rectangular cross-section of the apertures to thereby seat the shaving head 14 snugly between the bottom side of the flared end and shoulder 27.
With reference to FIGURES 1 and 2, when safety razor 11 is disassembled for storage, shaving head 14 is unfastened from handle 19 and inserted into slot 21 forming with handle 19 a small generally flat compact unit. As illustrated in the figures, slot 21 extends from open end 28 of handle 19 towards the opposite end 22. However, it should be appreciated that other slotted handle arrangements could serve equally well to hold shaving head 14 when the safety razor 11 is to be arranged in the aforedescribed compact unit. For example, slot 21 could terminate with closed ends and a spring member mounted at one of the ends to aid in holding shaving head 14 placed with the slot.
To facilitate shaving, it is desirable to shape shaving head 14 to define an arc. With particular reference to FIGURES 3 and 5, in the arcuate shaving head embodiment of the safety razor of the present invention, platform 12 and nestedly disposed cap member 13 are defined by arcuate cylindrical segments, that defining platform 12 coaxially disposed within that defining cap member 13. Where slot 21 is rectangular, the top surface 29 of cap member 13 is provided with rectangular flat bottom recess 31. The recess 31 is centrally located within cap member 13 and extends thereacross parallel to the edge thereof parallel to leading edge 18 of platform 12. The flat bottom recess 31 provides more surface contact between cap member 13 and the slotted handle 19 thereby enhancing the ability of handle 19 to grip shaving head 14. It should be noted that without the recess 31, only a point contact will exist between the cap member 13 and slotted handle 19. Hence, the shaving head 14 is more liable to become disengaged from slot 21.
Referring now to FIGURE 4, to more permanently secure the razor blade 16 in the proper cutting position between platform 12 and cap member 13, the undeside 32 of cap member 13 is provided with a first and second spaced protruding guidebars 33 and 34 respectively. The bars 33 and 34 are disposed centrally on cap member 13 on each side of aperture 26 and are aligned to receive the slotted guide aperture 36 of the conventional double edge razor blade 16. To further reduce the possibility of razor blade 16 moving while shaving and hence possible concomitant cutting, tab projections 37 are provided at each corner of the underside 32 of cap member 13. Tabs 37 also serve as shields for the corners of the cutting edge 17 of blade 16. This further reduces the possibility inflicting cuts with the razor blade corners during the shaving process.
As noted hereinbefore, the safety razor described supra is characterized by being able to be disassembled and arranged into a small compact unit for storage. Because of this compact feature, the safety razor can be carried conveniently on the person, for example, in a suitable carrying case.
What is claimed is:
1. A safety razor capable of being disassembled and arranged in a compact unit for storage adapted for use with a double edge razor blade having a slotted guide aperture, the combination comprising; a shaving head including a platform adapted to support thereon in shaving relation to an edge thereof a razor blade having at least one cutting edge; a cap member disposed in nested relation to said platform to clamp said blade in shaving relation against said platform; and a slotted handle having a first end thereof adapted to be detachably secured to said platform, said slot adapted to receive and hold said shaving head therein when detached from said handle, said platform defining an arcuate cylindrical segment with a centrally located circular aperture, said cap member defining an arcuate cylindrical segment with a centrally located threaded circular aperture, said platform aperture being aligned with said cap member aperture when said safety razor is assembled for shaving, said handle being cylindrical and defining a rectangular slot extending from a second end thereof, said first end of said handle having a mating male threaded section of a length selected to render said blade in shaving relation against said platform when threadably engaged with said threaded aperture of said cap member, and said cap member having a top surface defining a flat bottom recess of a Width at least as large as the width of said slot of said handle centrically located to extend across said cap member parallel to the cutting edges of said blade.
2. A safety razor capable of being disassembled and arranged in a compact unit for storage, the combination comprising; a shaving head including a platform adapted to support thereon in shaving relation to an edge thereof a razor blade having at least one cutting edge, a cap member disposed in nested relation to said platform to clamp said blade in shaving relation against said platform; and an elongated handle having a first end thereof adapted to be detachably secured to said platform, said elongated handle having a slot extending lengthwise from the end thereof opposite said first end With said slot extending for the full width of said handle at the location of said slot, and the top surface of said cap member having a flat bottomed recess of a width at least as large as the width of said handle at the location of said slot, said recess being located centrally of said cap member and generally parallel to a cutting edge of said blade, said slot of said handle being adapted to receive and hold said shaving head with a portion of said handle received within said recess.
3. The safety razor as recited in claim 2 further defined by said cap member and said platform being arcuate cylindrical segments with said platform nested within said cap member and with said cap member recess extending in the axial direction thereof.

Claims (1)

1.
