(Cl. 15-229) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention generally comprises a removable mop head, which may be expendable or is interchangeable with others, as desired, having a plurality of layers of juxtaposed strands of moisture absorbent fibers, such as cotton, which are bound together by strips of fabric stitched thereto in transverse relationship intermediate the ends of the fibrous strands.

The fabric strips are arranged so that one is arranged to substantially embrace at least one layer of the fibrous strands While another overlaps and completely encloses or embraces the strands contained by the first strip, including the embracing strip, having its terminals spaced apart on the outer side of the assembled strands so as to form an opposing pair of pockets between the binding strips to receive the opposingly directed tabs formed on paired fittings by which the mop head is detachably secured to a handle.

Objects of the in'vention This invention relates to a mop structure, and it has particular reference to improvements in wet mops but suitable also for general use for cleaning and polishing floors and the like, having a separable mop head of novel construction, as hereinafter described, and having simple means whereby the mop head is removably connected to the handle thereof.

An object of the invention is that of providing a mop head of simple and economical structure and design capable of being quickly and easily removed from its handle for replacement or for proper cleaning, and affording a mop head having no exposed metallic parts or protuberances which are capable of marring or scufling objects of furniture, and the like, around which the mop is used.

Another object of the invention is that of providing a mop head which is durable in construction while being highly absorptive in character, and which is easily cleaned.

While the foregoing objects are paramount, other and lesser objects will become apparent as the description proceeds, when considered in connection with the appended drawings wherein:

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a mop embodying the invention, showing the handle thereof fragmentarily.

FIGURE 2 is a fragmentary exploded perspective view on an enlarged scale showing an end portion of the handle and the fittings thereon for engagement by the mop head, for attachment of the mop head to the handle.

FIGURE 3 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale taken on the line 3-3 of FIGURE 1, and

FIGURE 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44 of FIGURE 3.

Referring to the drawing, the mop of the invention includes a mop head as hereinafter described, designated generally by the numeral 10, and an elongated handle therefor, indicated generally by the numeral 11.

The mop head 10, which is removably connected to the handle 11 as hereinafter described, consists substantially in its entirety of a plurality of layers 12 and 13 of strands of absorbent fibrous material, such as cotton, arranged in parallel, side by side relation to each other. The layers 12 and 13 of strands are arranged one upon the other and connected intermediate their ends by strips of fabric 14 and 15, the strip 14 being applied transversely of one surface of the layer 13 and stitched thereto and overlapping and stitched to the opposing surface thereof, in the manner shown in FIGURE 3.

As shown, the strips of fabric 14 and 15 are folded or lapped upon themselves, and comprise several thicknesses of material whereby they are characterized by a degree of stiffness. The several strands which comprise the layers 12 and 13 are folded upon themselves, about the strips of fabric 14 and 15, and their opposite end portions depend therefrom.

The two layers of strands 12 and 13 and the two folded strips of fabric 14 and 15, which are arranged alternatively one above the other, with the layer of strands 12 uppermost, are sewn together by parallel lines of stitching 16, as shown in FIGURES 1 and 4.

A pair of pockets 17 are formed between the folds of the uppermost strip of fabric 14, between the lines of stitching 16 and below the uppermost layer of strands 12, on opposite sides of a central opening 18 defined be tween the ends of the outer fabric strip 15, as best shown in FIGURE 3.

A pair of semi-cylindrical fittings 19, which are removably connected to opposite sides of the handle 11 adjacent one of its ends, each have an integral planar tab 20 thereon extending perpendicular to and outwardly from the longitudinal axis of the handle 11 and positioned opposite said one of its ends. a

The semi-cylindrical fittings 19 together embrace the handle 11 and are connected thereto by engagement of a screw 21 with an opening 22 therefor in the handle 11 and corresponding openings 23 in the fittings 19. The opening 23 in one of the fittings 19 is tapped for engagement by the screw 21.

The integral planar tabs 20 on the semi-cylindrical fittings 19 are receivable in the pockets 17, respectively, as shown in FIGURES 3 and 4, whereby the mop head 10 is adapted to be removably connected to the handle 11.

The invention may be modified within certain limitations by persons skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and intent thereof or the scope of the appended claim.

What is claimed is:

In a mop structure, the combination of a separable mop head and an elongated handle therefor, said mop head consisting substantially in its entirety of a plurality of layers of strands of absorbent fibrous material arranged in parallel, side by side relation to each other, the strands of said layers being arranged one upon another and connected intermediate their ends by individual strips of fabric for the respective layers arranged transversely thereof, spaced parallel lines of stitching extending transversely of and connecting said strands and said strips of fabric and forming therewith a pair of fiat pockets positioned between two adjacent layers of said strands, one side of said mop head having a central opening therein communicating with said pockets, said handle having a pair of arcuate fittings forming a socket removably connected to one of its ends, and said fittings each having an integral outwardly directed planar tab, perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of said handle, said tabs being removably receivable in said pockets to substantially fill the same in the assembled p jsition of said mop head rela- 3,008,166 11/1961 Lay 15-229 tive to said handle, whereby said mop head is removably 3,145,406 8/ 1964 Lay 15-229 X connected to said handle.
