UMBRELLA OR PARASOL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,588, dateddanuary 19, 1886.

Be it known that I, GEORGE WILLIAM JONES, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of- New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Self Opening and Closing Umbrellas or Parasols' of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.

Reference is tobe had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figurel is a sectional side elevation of the frame ot' one of my improved umbrellas shown open and part being broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the upper part of the same shown closed and part being broken away. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the lower part of the same shown closed and with the outer tube drawn down. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the same,taken through the line a: x, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of the same, taken through the line y y, Fig. 3.

The object of this invention is to promote convenience in opening and closingumbrellas or parasols.

The invention consists in the combination, with the ribs and braces and their runners, of a hollow stick having arod sliding therein and connected byawi-re with a slotted tube sliding upon the lower end of the hollow stick and provided with an exterior sliding tube having a cross-pin passing through the slot of the interior tube, a spring interposed between the crosspin and the end of the stick, a spring interposed between shoulders upon the rod and hollow stick, and spring-catches connecting the two tubes and the inner tube and hollow stick, whereby the umbrella or parasol can be opened and closed by the action of the said springs.

Telescopic braces and their runner are connected with the ribs, the braces and their runner, and the hollow stick, to hold the ribs in the drawings, as there is nothing new in its construction. V

To the upper runner, D, are hinged the inner ends ofthe ribs E, to which near theirinner ends are hinged the outer ends of short braces F. The inner ends of the braces F are hinged to the intermediate runner, G, which is attached to the hollow stick A, near its upper end. rIhe braces F control the movements ofthe ribs E. The ribs E are held from turning too far back by the extension or telescopic braces H, the outer ends ot the outer parts of which are hinged to the ribs E, and the inner endsof theirinner parts are hinged to thelow est runner, I. The outer parts ofthe bracesH slide in theinner parts, and are held from drawing out ofthe said inner parts by pins J, which pass through slots in the said inner parts and are attached to the inner ends of the said outer parts, as shown in Fig. l. The runner I is attached to the hollow stick A at a little distance'from the-runner G. The inner part of the rod B is reduced in size, and upon it is placed a spiral spring, K, the upper end of which rests against the shoulder of the said rod B, and its lower end rests against a shoulder in the inner surface of the hollow stick A, at the inner end of the countersink formed in the said stick to receive the longer part of the rod B.

To the lower end ofthe rod B is attached the upper end of the wire L, the lower end of which isattached to the closed lower end of the tube M, the upper end of which is placed upon the lower end of the hollow stick A.

Within the tube M is placed a strong spiral spring, N, the upper end of which rests against the lower end ofthe stick A, and its lower end rests against a cross-pin, O. The ends of the crosspin O pass through aslot in 'the lower part of the Y tube M, and are secured to the middle part of the tube P, which is closed at its lower end. The upward movement of the tube P upon the tube M is limited by a shoulder formed upon the upper end of the said tube M.

To the inner surface of the upper end of the tube P is attached a catch, Q, with which eugages a spring-latch, R, attached to the outer surface of the upper part of the tube M. The

upper end ofthe spring-latch R is bent out- IOC are in the position shown in Fig. l, the latch R will be disengaged from the catch allowing the tube M audits attaelnnents to be forced upward by the spring N and relaxing thetension ofthe said spring, so that the spring K can force the rod B upward within the stick A. The upward movement of the rod B carries the runner D and the inner ends of the ribs E with it, drawing the upper ends of the braces F inward toward the rod B, and swinging the ribs E inward against the stick A, closing the umbrella or parasol. The tube I is then pushed upward upon the tube M, and the two tubes are pushed upward upon the stick A, compressing the spring N and leaving,` the umbrella or parasol ready to be opened when required. rIhe tube M, when pushed upward upon the stick A, is held in place by the spring-latch T, which engages with the catch-pin U, attached to the inner surface of the upper end of the said tube M. NVhen the umbrella or parasol is to be opened, the spring-latchlis pushed inward, disengag- 1 ing it from the catch-pin U and allowing the spring N to force the stick A upward, and thus expand the ribs E.

Having thus described my in vention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In au umbrella or parasol, the combination, with the ribs E, braces F, and runners D G, of the hollow stick A, the rod B, the slotted interior tube, M, the exterior tube, I), the connecting wire L, the cross-pin O, the two springs N K, and the spring-catches QR and T U, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby t-he umbrella or parasol can be opened and closed bythe action ofthe said springs, as set forth.

2. In a self opening and closing umbrella or parasol, the combination, with the ribs E, the braces F, and runner G, and the hollow stick A, of the telescopic braces II, and the runner I, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said ribs will be held from being forced too far back, as set forth.
