assignments, to C. J. Webb, Inc., a corporation of Pennsylvania No Drawing. Filed July 24, 1964, Ser. No. 385,053 3 Claims. (Cl. 252-153) The present invention is directed to a composition for protecting metals against corrosion.
The protection of metals against corrosion, such as the protection of electrical equipment against the action of water, has assumed large scale commercial importance. Thus, enormous quantities of anti-corrosive agents are presently used for the protection of underground cable, industrial transformers, and the like.
This invention has as an object the provision of a novel anti-corrosive agent which provides a high degree of protection against corrosion for a wide variety of metals.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The compositions of the present invention comprise from five to ten weight percent of the cyclohexylamine or dicyclohexylamine salts of an alkylated phosphate having the formula R PO wherein R is selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, and isobutyl radicals, together with from five to twenty weight percent of an alkyl stearate in which the alkyl radical has from one to five carbon atoms, such as methyl stearate, ethyl stearate, propyl stearate, isopropyl stearate, butyl stearate, isobutyl stearate, and amyl stearate. The mixture should be dissolved in a suitable organic solvent, preferably one containing a halogenated solvent, such as beta trichloroethylene, trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, dichloroethylene, because of the flame resisting properties of the halogenated solvents. However, suitable hydrocarbon solvents may be used, as may mixtures of suitable hydrocarbon solvents and halogenated organic solvents. The compositions of the present invention should include a suflicient amount of detergent to permit the composition to readily emulsify with water. The nature of the detergent is not critical from a chemical point of View, and anionic detergents, such as the sodium salts of organic sulfonates or sulfates, such as the alkylaryl sulfomates and the sulfates of the straight chain primary alcohols may he used, as may the cationic detergents, such as the quaternary ammonium halides, and the nonionic detergents, such as those of the so-called Ninol and Surfynol type.
The pH of the mixture should be within the range of 5.0 to 9.0. Normally, the mixture will inherently reach this range. However, the regulation of the mixture to this pH range may be achieved, if needed, by the addition of acid or alkali.
The following examples illustrate the nature of the invention.
Example 1 A composition containing 6 weight percent of the cyclohexylamine salt trimethyl phosphate, 10 weight percent of butyl stearate, Weight percent of beta trichloroethylene, 63 weight percent of a petroleum hydrocarbon having a flash point of 200 F., and 1 weight percent of a commercial aryl sulfonate detergent.
Example 2 A composition containing 8 weight percent of the cyclohexylamine salt of triethyl phosphate, 14 weight percent of amyl stearate, 75 weight percent of a hydrocarbon havnited States Patent 0 ice ing a flash point of 185 F. and 3 weight percent of a commercial polyoxylethylated ether detergent.
Example 3 A composition containing 9 weight percent of the dicyclohexylamine salt of tripropyl phosphate, 17 weight percent of methyl stearate, 20 weight percent of perchloroethylene, 51 weight percent of a hydrocarbon solvent having a flash point of 200 F. and 3 weight percent of a detergent prepared from the sodium salt of the sulfonate of dodecylbenzene.
Example 4 A composition containing 7 weight percent of the cyclohexylamine salt of isobutyl phosphate, 10 weight percent of tributyl phosphate, weight percent of a hydrocarbon solvent having a flash point of 180 F and 3 weight percent of benzethonium chloride detergent.
Example 5 A composition containing 10 weight percent of the dicyclohexylamine salt of tripropyl phosphate, 15 weight percent of isopropyl stearate, 73 weight percent of a hydrocarbon solvent having a flash point of about F. and 2 weight percent of a detergent of the Ninol type.
Example 6 A composition containing 5 weight percent of the cyclohexylamine salt of trimethyl phosphate, 12 weight percent of isopropyl stearate, 10 weight percent of dichloroethylene, 70 weight percent of a hydrocarbon solvent having a flash point of 190 F., and 3 weight percent of sodium lauryl sulfate detergent.
Example 7 A composition containing 8 weight percent of the dicyclohexylamine salt of tributyl phosphate, 14 weight percent of methyl stearate, 76 weight percent of a hydrocarbon solvent having a flash point of F., and 2 weight percent of a detergent derived from a sulfonate of a mixture from the 0x0 process.
Example 8 A composition containing 9 weight percent of the cyclohexylamine salt of tripropyl phosphate, 15 weight percent of propyl stearate, 74 weight percent of a hydrocarbon solvent having a flash point of 190 F., and 2 weight percent of sodium lauryl sulfate.
The formation of the cyclohexylamine and dicyclohexylamine salts of the alkyl phosphates may readily be accomplished by anyone having ordinary skill in organic chemistry. These materials should be reacted in stoichiometric amounts in suitable solvents.
The compositions of the present invention have efficacy as anti-corrosive coatings for metals. When applied as thin films to metal surfaces, they render extended protection against the corrosive action of water or of gases having a high content of water.
The present invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof and, accordingly, reference should be made to the appended claims, rather than to the foregoing specification as indicating the scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A composition for protecting metals against corrosion consisting essentially of a uniform mixture of 5 to 10 weight percent of a salt selected from the group consisting of the cyclohexylamine and dicyclohexylamine salts with a phosphate having the formula R PO in which R is selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl and isobutyl radicals, and 5 to 20 weight percent of an alkyl stearate in which the alkyl radical has from 1 to 5 carbon atoms dissolved in a suitable organic solvent capable of dissolving said salt and said alkyl stearate.
2. A composition in accordance with claim 1 in which the mixture contains a sufiicient amount of a surface active agent to permit the composition to readily emulsify with water.
3. A composition in accordance with claim 1 in which the pH of the mixture is between 5.0 and 9.0.

Claims (1)
1. A COMPOSITION FOR PROTECTING METALS AGAINST CORROSION CONSISTING ESSENTIALLY OF A UNIFORM MIXTURE OF 5 TO 10 WEIGHT OF A SALT SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF THE CYCLOHEXYLAMINE AND DICYCLOHEXYLAMINE SALTS WITH A PHOSPHATE HAVING THE FORMULA R3PO4 IN WHICH R IS SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF METHYL, ETHYL, PROPYL, ISOPROPYL, BUTYL AND SIOBUTYL RADICALS, AND 5 TO 20 WEIGHT PERCENT OF AN ALKYL STEARATE IN WHICH THE ALKYL RADICAL HAS FROM 1 TO 5 CARBOM ATOMS DISSOLVED IN A SUITABLE ORGANIC SOLVENT CAPABLE OF DISSOLVING SAID SALT AND SAID ALKYL STERATE.
