Description

Filed Sept. 29, 1965 FIG. 3
INVENTOR. GEORGE E HAZARD BY W 6%) FIG. 4
ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,341,240 DOOR CLOSURE CHECK George E. Hazard, 118 Aberdeen St., Rochester, NY. 14611 Filed Sept. 29, 1965, Ser. No. 491,181 4 Claims. (Cl. 292-338) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A door closure check is pivotally mounted on a door stop to bridge the space between the open side edge of the door and the jamb and door stop. A screw adjusts the length of the door check, and the door check can be swung aside to permit the door to close against its door stop.
This invention relates to means for holding a door in an open position.
Frequently, there is a need for a door closure check which will hold a door in an open position and which, when desired, can be moved out of the way so that the door can be returned to its closed position. This is particularly true in the case of public meeting places such as churches, auditoriums and the like where automatic door closures are frequently present and, in any event where the exodus en masse of large numbers of people make imperative that the doors be constantly open each time this occurs.
An object of this invention is to provide a door closure check.
A particular object of this invention is to provide a door closure check which is adjustable so that it can be used with doors of varying dimensions.
Still another object is to provide a door closure check which can be readily installed and easily operated.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a door closure check which has a simple structure which is inherently rugged.
These objects and such others as may appear as this specification proceeds are achieved by this invention.
In summary, this invention comprises a closure check for preventing a door hinged to a doorpost from swinging from an open position toward its closed position. The closure check comprises: (1) block means for preventing, when in block position, swinging of the door from said open position toward its closed position, and (2) pivotal mounting means for pivotally mounting the block means to one of the door and the doorpost, said mounting means permitting pivoting of said block means from said block position to a position whereat said door can swing to said closed position.
This invention is further described in conjunction with the drawing which forms a material part of these disclosures.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a plan view, partially in section, of a doorpost and door with a preferred, specific embodiment of a door closure check of this invention fastened to the doorpost and in position for holding the door open which view shows in phantom said embodiment in a position whereat the door can be swung to its closed position;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged, partially longitudinally sectioned, plan View of the specific embodiment of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a front view of the main body portion of the specific embodiment of FIGS. 1 and 2; and
FIG. 4 is an end view of the main body portion of FIG. 3.
In greater detail, the drawing in FIG. 1 illustrates a door hinged as by a hinge 11 to a vertically disposed doorpost 12 of a door frame. The door has a front 13, a back 14 and a side end 15 which, when the door 10 is in closed ice position, is adjacent the doorpost 12. The doorpost 12 comprises a face 16, commonly referred to as a jamb. Fastened to the jamb 16 is a strip or bead 18 commonly referred to as a door stop. The door stop 18 is situated so that when the door 10 is in closed position, a side of the door stop 18 is adjacent the front 13 of the door 10. Fastened to the front face of the door stop 18 is a preferred specific embodiment 20 of the door closure check of this invention.
The specific closure check 20, illustrated in greater detail in FIGS. 2-4, comprises block means 22 and pivotal mounting means 24.
The block means 22 comprise a main body member 26, a longitudinally adjustable extension 28 and a lock nut 29.
The main body member 26 has a longitudinal portion 30 and a laterally extending pivot arm portion 32. The longitudinal portion has a back end 33 which has two transverse surfaces 35 and 36 that meet at a angle. When the main body member 26 is in block position as in FIGS. 1 and 2, one surface 35 of the back end 33 abuts the door jamb 16 while the other surface 36 of the back end 33 abuts the door side of the doorstop 18. The longi tudinal portion 30 of the main body member 26 has therein a threaded bore 37 (see FIGS. 2 and 3) extending longitudinally backwar-dly from the front end of the main body member 26. The pivot arm portion 32 extends laterally and longitudinally so that when the main body member 26 is in block position as in FIGS. 1 and 2 the outer end of the arm portion 32 is disposed outwardly from the front of the door stop 18.
The longitudinally adjustable extension 28 in the embodiment shown is a machine screw which, with the lock nut 29 threadedly mounted thereon, is threadedly seated in the threaded bore 37 in the main body member 26.
The pivotal mounting means 24 comprise a pair of mounting brackets 38 and 39. Each mounting bracket, having the shape of an angle bar, comprises a pivot mountingleg 40 which is disposed adjacent the lateral arm portion 32 of the main body member 26. In addition, each mounting bracket comprises a closure check mounting leg 41 which extends outwardly from the pivot mounting leg 40 and which, when the closure check 20 is mounted on the doorstop 18 as in FIG. 1, is adjacent the front of the door stop 18. The lateral arm portion 32 of the main body member 26 is pivotally fastened to the pivot mounting legs 40 of the mounting brackets 38 and 39. The fastening in the embodiment shown comprises a pin 42 having a head at one end and extending through aligned holes through the pivot mounting legs 40 of the mounting brackets 38 and 39 and the lateral arm portion 32 of the main body member 26, which pin at its opposite end extends through a washer 43 and terminates in an upset end which bears against the outer side of the washer 43. The mounting legs 41 are secured to the front of the doorstop 18 as by way of screws or other suitable fasteners.
The door closure check 20 is used, after being mounted as indicated in FIG. 1, by pivoting it from a position whereat the door 10 in an open position is prevented from swinging from said open position to its closed position. By turning the extension 28 until it has a desired longitudinal distance beyond the main body member 26, and locking it into place by tightening the lock nut 29, the closure check 20 when in block position is adjusted so that the head of the extension bolt 28 bears against the side 15 of the door 10. In block position, the main body member 26 plus the extension bolt 28 span the space between the door jamb 16 and doorstop 18 and the side 15 of the door 10. When it is desired to permit the door 10 to return to closed position, the block means 22 are pivoted from the block position to a position such as indicated in phantom in FIG. 1, whereby the door 10 can be swung to its closed position which in FIG. 1 is indicated in phantom.
Thus, there is provided a door closure check of simple, but inherently rugged construction. It can be readily installed and is easy to operate. A feature of advantage is the ease with which it can be adjusted as desired.
Other features, advantages and specific embodiments of this invention will be readily apparent to those in the exercise of ordinary skill in the art. These specific embodiments are within the scope of the claimed subject matter unless expressly excluded by claim language. Moreover, while a specific embodiment of this invention has been described in considerable detail, variations and modifications of this embodiment can be efiected without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed and claimed. For instance, it is within the concepts of this invention to provide the head of the extension bolt 28 in the embodiment of FIGS. 1-4 with a protective, resilient bumper. Moreover, instead of being mounted On the doorstop, the closure check with modifications within the skill of the art is mounted on the front face of the door. Furthermore, under the broader aspects of this invention, the block means are pivotally mounted in a recess in the door in one embodiment and in a recess in the door jamb in another embodiment. Furthermore, in addition to being useful with a door hinged to a vertical door post, the closure check of this invention is useful in holding open windows of all kinds, overhead, hinged covers such as hinged skylights, and the like.
