Jawa@ J /re/ml//M 7mm/Ew United States Patent O 3,340,133 HONEYCOMB NOVELTY DEVICE James J. Krekovich, Raytown, M0., assignor to Hallmark Cards, Incorporated, Kansas City, Mo., a corporation of Missouri Filed Aug. 10, 1964, Ser. No. 388,635 1 Claim. (Cl. 161-14) ABSTRACT OF 'I'HE DISCLOSURE An ornamental device for use with a lamp shade and includes a honeycomb structure which is collapsible, and when opened will surround the shade of the lamp, and is engageable therewith. The honeycomb structure, when extended to engage the shade, has openings extending upwardly from the inside to the outside of the structure to prevent the light from the lamp from shining outwardly in a horizontal direction. Ornamental members have legs received in the openings for s-upport on the cX- terior of the honeycomb structure.
This invention relates to a honeycomb novelty device and more particularly to a honeycomb collapsible ornament adapted for use with a lamp shade or the like to create a pleasing glow from such lamp.
Various honeycomb novelty devices have been devised for animated cards and objects and party goods and party favors, but applicant has devised a honeycomb structure which is believed to be novel for use in connection with a lamp shade.
The princi-pal object of the present invention is to provide an ornamentation for a lamp shade which will engage entirely around the shade and fastened therearound and the honeycomb structure having openings at an angle upwardly from the shade proper so that the light will not be visible directly by a person in the room and which will provide a pleasant glow to the lamp.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide `a collapsible honeycomb structure having a cardboard base member secured on each end thereof whereby the honeycomb structure may be opened or extended and the cardboard pieces secured together by attaching means and whereby the cardboard structure is of a compound con vex curve having a downwardly extending lip providing a recess which engages over the upper rim of the lamp shade and thereby holds the honeycomb device thereon; to provide ornamental features 4on the outside of the honeycomb structure to suit the occasion for the decoration such as Halloween, Valentines Day or other festive occasions.
Still further objects of the present invention are to provide for layers of thin paper, one on top of the other, and secured together with adhesive at an Vangle of approximately 45 and said adhesive being in spaced parallel lines and cutting of the sheets of material and the cardboard which is secured to the underneath side of the rst layer and to the top of the top layer by usual tools such as electric cutting instruments or the like, and to provide a device of this character simple and economical to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein are set forth by way of illustration and example certain embodiments of this invention.
FIG. l is a side view of my invention shown attached to the lamp shade with parts broken away to illustrate the fastening means.
FIG. 2 is a vertical cross section through the device including the lamp shade.
3,340,133 Patented Sept. 5, 1967 FIG. 3 is a side view of the honeycomb structure in partly open position particularly illustrating the cardboard end supporting members.
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary view of the honeycomb structure and cardboard ends and pulled apart in straight position illustrating the adhesive attaching the sheets of honeycomb material together.
FIG. 5 is a perspective view of one type of ornament.
FIG. 6 is a view of F-IG. 5 taken from the opposite side.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
1 designates a decorative honeycomb device embodying the features of my invention shown in FIG. 2 to be attached to a shade 2 of a lamp 3 having a bulb 4 and the shade having the usual fastening means 5 engaging the bulb 4. The shade has an annular rim 6 to which my honeycomb structure is engaged as will hereinafter be described.
The ornament 7 is preferably made from a plurality of sheets or plies of thin paper or expansible tissues 8 laid one on top of the other to form a plurality of such sheets and secured together by adhesive as indicated at 9 (FIG. 4). It will be noted the adhesive 9 is at an angle with respect to the vertical sides 10 as shown in FIG. 4 at an approximately 45 angle. The adhesive is formed in spaced parallel lines and any desired number of sheets may be laid and secured together in this manner and may be of any desired size; for instance, 24 x 60 inches, so that the ornament may be cut therefrom.
The plurality of sheets 8 are placed on a dat sheet of cardboard 11 or other relatively stiff material and a like sheet 12 is placed on the top thereof and the entire rst sheet on the bottom secured over its entire surface to such cardboard as indicated at 13 (FIG. 4). The top sheet 14 of the stack is also adhesively secured over its entire surface to the cardboard 12 on the top of the stack.
The ornament may then be cut from the stack of sheets by the usual cutting machine (not shown). The conguration of the sheets and the cardboard and support members 1I and 12 are of a compound convex curve having straight side 1S in the compound convex curve indicated at 16 in the upper portion thereof and tapering as indicated at 17 to the point 18. The upper portion of the compound convex curve terminates in a lip portion 19 forming a notch 20.
When the ornament is desired to be attached to the lamp shade 2 it is expanded around the shade by taking hold of the cardboard end members 11 and 12 and the notch portion engaged over the annular rim 6 of the lamp shade as illustrated in FIG. 2. The cardboard end members 11 and 12 are then secured together by wire clip fasteners 20 as illustrated in FIG. 1 to hold the ornamentation around the lamp shade. Any size ornamentation may be made to t lamp shades of different dimensions.
Ornamentations such -as shown in FIGS. 5 and 6 may be secured to the ornamentation if desired. In FIG. 1 there is shown a curved piece 21 simulating the mouth of a character that is somewhat curved. The eyes and nose of the character indicated at 22, 23 and 24 are made from a piece of cardboard having a triangular shaped body 25 with legs 26 and 27 extending at an angle downwardly substantially the same as the angle of the openings 28 in the ornamentation when it is opened or expanded around the lamp shade. The legs 26 and 27 it Iand engage in the openings 28 as illustrated in FIG. 2 so that the body portion 22 will be on the outside of the surface 29 of the ornamentation. Any form of ornamentation as desired may be utilized. The cardboard portion 21 is provided with legs 30 (FIG. 2).
It will be ovious from the foregoing that I have provided an improved Iornamentation made from a plurality of sheets of thin paper honeyco-mbed to provide openings therethrough at an angle whereby the light from the lamp will not be viewablerfrom persons in the room and which will `give a soft glow to the light. It will be obvious that any color of paper may be utilized to suit the preference of the user.
It is to be -understood that while I have illustrated and described one form of my invention, it is notto be Ilimited to the specific form or arrangement of parts herein described rand shown except insofar as such limitations are included in the claim.
I claim:
In combination:
(a) an ornament adapted to surround a light source land comprising exible extensible honeycomb structure, said honeycomb structure being expandable around said light source and after expanded having `a generally vertically extending outwardly directed surface and an inwardly directed surface, (b) said honeycomb structure after expanded forming radially extending passageways directed outwardly 5 and upwardly from said inwardly directed surface to said outwardly directed surface, and (c) a substantially vertically directed planar ornamental member having legs extending rearwardly and downwardly therefrom at an angle correspond- 10 ing to the angle of said passageways, said legs being received in selected passageways' supporting said ornamental member on the outwardly directed surface of said honeycomb structure.
