Unrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT B. HELLIW'ELL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
NECK-WEAR RETAINER.
SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,754, dated January 5, 1886.
Application filed November 5, 1885.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT B. HELLIWELL, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neck-Wear Retainers and CollarButtons, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings,in which- Figures 1 and 2 represent front and rear views of a neck-wear retainer embodying my invention. Fig. 3 represents a section in line w 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of the collar-button. Fig. 5 represents a central vertical section of a neckscarf, and of the retainer, and of the collar-button embodying my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a neck-wear retainer which is adapted to engage with a collar-button and be thereby firmly held in position.
It further consists of a button which is adapted to secure a collar to the neckband of a shirt, and also sustain an article of neckwear, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a plate which is secured to the shield, head, or supporting-plate of an article of neck-wear, shown in the present case as a scarf.
13 represents a stationaryjaw, which is connected with the plate A; and 0 represents a movable jaw, which is fitted tot-he plate A in a vertical slot, A, therein. and adapted to be moved to and from the jaw B, the movable jaw having a handle or strap, 0, connected with it for conveniently operating said jaw in the direction from the jaw B. Connected with the jaws B C is a spring, D, the object whereof is to force the jaw 0 toward the jaw 13 and hold said jaw O in closed position.
E represents a button consisting of a head, E, and a shank, E the latter having a nose, E, at its outer end and a groove, E, near said end. The shank of the button is passed through the buttonhole ot' the neckband of the shirt-and the button-holes of the collar, leaving the nose of the button projecting in front of the collar. The scarf is now presented to the nose so that said nose enters be- Serial No. 181,929. (No model.)
tween the jaws B O and separates the same, said jaws appearing at the back of the scarf. WVhen the front wall of the groove E* clears the contiguous edge of the lower jaw, the latter, under the action of the spring D, drops into said groove, causing a locking action of thejaws B G with the button, so that the collar is prevented from displacement, and the scarf is firmly connected with the button, the scarf thus being reliably retained in position.
In order to remove the scarf, the lowerjaw is drawn downward, thus relieving the button of the holding action of said jaw and permit-' ting the scarf to be disconnected from the shank of the button by an outward motion of the scarf. The button may then be removed from the collar and neckband of the shirt, the same being readily accomplished, as there is no head at the outward or front end of the shank to resist such removal, this construction also permitting of the employment of narrow or small button-holes sulficient to receive the shank of the button.
The plate A is formed of metal, and the jaw B is integral or punched out of the same and bent, forming somewhat of a lip or hook for attachment of one end of the spring D.
The lower jaw, O, is formed of metal into two lengths, between which the lower wall of the slot A enters, thus guiding said jaw in its motions. The bend of the pieceforms an eye, 0', for attachment of the handle 0, and the upper end of the outer end of the piece has a lower lip or hook, 0 for securing the end of the spring D, the upper end whereof is attached to the jaw B, as h'asbeen stated, said spring being in the present case of the form of a rubber spring.
It is evident that the plate, jaws, and button maybe made of hard rubber, celluloid, or other sufficiently strong'material.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A necktie-retainer consisting of a plate having a fixed jaw and a movable jaw, said jaws being connected by springs, and a button having a groove or recess in its shank, substantially as described.
2. A necktie-retainer having a slotted plate with a fixed jaw and a movable one, the mov- D, connecting said'jawsBand O and normally adapted to hold the same in contact, and the button E, having head E and shank E, with a groove or recess, E, substantially as described.
ROBT. B. HELLIWELL.
