CHARLES KUNZE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
CLASP FOR CIGAR BOXES.-
SPECIIEICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 833,640v dated January 5, 1886.
. Application filed July 6, 1885. Serial No. 170,794. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES KUNZE, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps for GigarBoxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved spring-catch for cigar and other boxes, by which the boxes can readily be opened and rigidly locked; and the invention consists of a spring-catch formed of a spring-hook ofelastic sheet-metal that is attached to the front edge and top of the lid, and provided with inwardly-bent projections or anchors that engage a recessed plate attached in front of a recess of the front wall of the body.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box with my improved clasp. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on line 00 at, Fig. 1. Fig. 3is a detail View of the blank from which the spring-hook is made, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the recessed front plate of the clasp.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of a box, and B the lid of the same. To the front edge of the lid Bis attached a springhook, O, that is made of elastic sheet metal and made integral with a plate, 0, having perforated ears a a, by which said plate is attached by nails 1) b to the front edge and top of the lid. The plate 0 is bent at right angles at the front-edge of the lid, two of the fastening-nails being driven on at the edge, while a third nail is driven through the lid and clinched at the under side of the same. The front end of the spring-hook 0 extends downwardly, and is provided with inwardlybent projections or anchors d d, that serve to take hold of a recessed front plate, D, that is attached by nails to the recess 0? at the upper front edge of the front wall of the body A, as shown in Fig. 2. The inwardly-bent projections or anchors d d of the spring-hook O are made of tapering shape, so as to pass readily over the upper edge of the front plate, D, and enable them topass through the recess of the plate D into the recess of the front wall of the body A.
In closing the box the lid is pressed down on the body, whereby the anchors d (I pass over the edge of the front plate, so that the spring-hook is forced in outward direction until the anchors d d pass beyond the transverse upper part of the front plate, D, so as to engage the same.
In opening the lid the front wall of the body A is pressed inwardly until the recessed front plate, D, releases the anchors of the spring-hook, so that the lid springs into open position.
A cheap, strong, and durable spring-catch for cigar and other boxes is thus obtained that has at the same time a very ornamental appearance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a box-body having a front wall recessed at its upper edge, a slotted plate attached in front of the recess, of a hinged lid having a spring-hook having inwardly-bent tapering anchors, the spring-hook being integral with a fastening-plate attached to the front edge and top of the lid, substantially as set forth.
2. In a spring-clasp for cigar and other boxes, a spring-hook provided with inwardlyprojecting tapering anchors, and madeintegral with a fastening-plate having perforated ears for attachment to the lid, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as CHARLES KUNZE.
