Description

(No Model.)
J. MACDONALD! CHIMNEY GAP.
No. 332,810. Patented Dec. 22,18851 v/ITNEESEE \NVENTDR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MACDONALD, OF NORWOOD, MASSACHUSETTS.
CHIMNEY-CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,810, dated December 22, 1885.
Application filedApri115, 1884.. Serial No. 128,032. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN MACDONALD, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at N orwood, in the county of Norfolk and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Chimney-Cap and Draft-Accelerator Combined, which, according to my knowledge and belief, has not been in public use or on sale in the United States for more than two years prior to this application, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are to provide an ornamental chimney-cap, and by the action of the wind to accelerate the draft in the flues. I attain these objects by so arranging deflectors inside of and a swinging cover over a chimney-cap composed of open-work sides, with eithera horizontal or inclined fixed cover open in the center, that the space open for the entrance of the wind, on whichever side it strikes, is smaller than the space for the exit of the wind and smoke.
My invention consists in combining with a chimney-cap having open sides inside deflectors placed at such an angle as to deflect the wind upward from the top of the flues.
My invention further consists in making a chimney-cap with a cover swinging from a central line, whereby downward currents of air are prevented from entering the flues, and also provides for increasing the size of the opening by which the wind and smoke escape on the leeward side.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of cap. Fig. 2 isa transverse section.
The metallic open-work sides and ends (2 e, inclined cover, with open center 10, form the shell or case, attached to the sides of which on the inside, at the necessary angle, are the deflectors a, and suspended from a rod run lengthwise through and near the apex of the ends is the swinging cover m. This cover m is curved or inclined downward to both sides, insomuch as that when swung by the pressure of air one edge of it may touch the cover 1?.
The operation of my invention is thus described: The wind, passing in through the openings in outside case, e 6, passes upward between the deflector a and the cover 1), and strikes the under side of the swinging cover m on the opposite side to that on which it enters. The cover is thus raised on that side, and thereby provides more room for the exit of the wind and the smoke which it draws up from the tines. At the same time the other edge of the swinging cover is brought down against the fixed cover 19, thus preventing the wind from entering there.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A chimueycap composed of open-work sides, and a fixed cover with opening in its center, in combination with deflectors and a swinging cover.
JOHN MACDONALD.
