SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,908, dated December 8, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, .Mains POTTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Oook and State of Illinois,

5 have invented a new and useful Improvement in Protection Barb-Vire, of which the following,` is a specification.

My invention relates to a twostranded barbed fencing-wire wherein one strand of the 1o cable is out, and from the cut ends the barb is formed, while the other strand is wrapped around and secures the bent ends, as hereinafter more fully described.

The object of my invention is to provide a substantial and elastic wire fence, and one that shall be effective as an animabinelosnre 2 5 without cruelly prioking or harming the animals.

3o twisted together in the usual way. At eertain intervals of space in the twist of the cable the stra-nd a is out and bent in reverse directions, described as follows: The end e2 is bent down from the neck a5 and up again, forming 3 5 the eye o. The other end oi' the wire, a?, is bent in the same manner, but in an opposite direction from the eye c', forming` the eye a3. The

two parts are then brought together, the point of juncture being at the necks (L5 0.6 of the strand a. There they come together the four 4o strands of the barb-section lie side by side. The strand b is coiled or bent once around these four strands, forming,` the loop c, which passes between the twist of the cable at either end of said section over the necks a5 e5, and 45 so detains the barbsection in position, preventing it from slipping` or moving in any direction, at the saine time bindingl the main Wires tightly together. The presence of the eyes on the barbs enables nie to make the barb 5o stronger, as also they prevent too deepA pene- `tration of the points into an animal encountering the same, while they are sutliciently long enough to `give the required warning. This feature is desirable, because animals are 55 often laeerated and sometimes seriously injured by very long barbs.

As an article of manufacture, the herein- 6o described barbed wire, comprising the two twisted strands cc b, strand a being eut to forni barbs, and the ends of said strand bent and interlocked, as shown, and the strand b provided with loop or coil c, which closely 65 wraps and secures together the said bent ends of strand ce, substantially as described.
