SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,172, dated November 24, 1885.

} To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD E. WEBsrER, residing at Brainerd, in the county of Crow Wing and State of Minnesota,and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Files, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation; Fig. 2, a top view; Fig. 3, a section at line as of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a detail; Fig. 5, a section at line y of Fig. 4.; Fig. 6, a modification relating to devices for holding a number of blanks to one of the covers. Fig. 7 is adetail; Fig. 8, a modification of the case; Fig. 9, a modification of the My invention relates to that class of paperfiles primarily designed to receive and hold printed blanks.

The objects of my invention are to provide a case for blanks having one or more compartments, each compartment provided with one or more removable covers to protect the blanks from dust, and to provide each cover wit-l1 devices for holding a number of blanks in such manner that one or more can be readily removed for use, which I accomplish as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

In the drawings, A represents a case, which,

as shown, is open atthe bottom, although, if

desired, the bottom may be closed. The upper end of this case, as shown in Fig. 3, is inclined. Each end of the case is, as shown in Fig. 3, out at the top, so as to form three steps or ledges, b, (more distinctly shown in Fig. 7 and to the upper end of each end piece, as shown, is secured an ornamental coveringpiece, 0.

f are two hooks secured to the inside of the cover B, and extending down a little distance, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, which hooks are designed to receive and hold a number of blanks which can be easily hung thereon, the points of the hooks being sharp, if desired.

g is a piece of wire secured to the inside of the cover B near to each end, behind which wire the blanks are placed. This Wire is made of spring metal and isadapted to be sprung outwardly when it is desired to place As shown, each cover is provided with a handle, it, having an opening, 2', into which a strip of paper or card-board may be placed, upon which may be written or printed the name of the blank below. In use a number of blanks, k, may be placed upon the hooks attached to each cover, B, and the blanks being behind the Wire 9 they will be held on the hooks securely enough to prevent accidental removal therefrom. The blanks upon each cover can be placed in one of the small compartments in the top of the case, and each cover,when in position, as shown in the drawings, will close and cover one of such small compartments, protecting the blanks from dust. By taking hold of the handle it of one of the covers, such cover, together with the blanks connected therewith, can be removed from the case, and then one or more of such blanks can readily be removed from the hooks for use, the remaining blanks being then returned to the case, as before.

It is not necessary to incline the end pieces of the case as above described, but they may be straight or horizontal on top, as shown in Fig. 8, or so arranged as to present a perpendicular front, as shown in Fig. 9. Neither is it necessary to provide the partitions a a, because the covers may rest upon the tops of the end pieces and together cover the case; but I think it preferable to use these partitions a a, as the protection against dust will be more perfect.

The blanks can more conveniently be used if the end pieces be inclined, as first described, because then the names of the blanks being raised one above the other can be more readily seen. If desired, the partitions a a might extend to the bottom of the case; but this would increase the expense and be attended with no corresponding advantage, except when the case is arranged as shown in Fig. 9, when they would be required to sustain and separate the blanks.

The case can be made of any suitable size or shape, and may consist of a single compartment or of a number of compartments, and a number of small cases can be arranged, if desired, in a rotary case for ofiice use or arranged for use in a rotary desk.

I do not limit myself to the exact means described above for securing temporarily a number of blanks to the inside of one of the covers, as this may be accomplished in various ways. In Fig. 6 I have shown one modification in which the hooks f are retained, but instead of the wire 9 in front of the blanks two .small springs, Z, may be used, the same being attached at their upper ends to the cover, the free ends extending down in front of the points of the hooks. The gist of my invention in thisrespect consists in providing the cover of a compartment with devices adapted to hold a number of blanks in such manner that they .will not be readily detached accidentally, but can be easily removed for use. When the hooks are used, of course the blanks must be perforated either before or at the time they are placed upon such hooks.

It is not necessary to make the cover of the two parts d e. 01 might be made considerably thicker than shown, and thehooksf and wire 0 g could be secured directly to the part d, as shown in Fig. 8; or the cover may be made of one piece so formed as to be the same shape as d and 6 combined.

In the modification shown in Fig. 9, the partitions dividing the box into compartments are set in an inclined position in relation thereto, and extend from end to end thereof.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of a closed case, A, having an interior series of parallel partitions, a a

of varying length, so that one projects outward beyond the other, and the covers B, having their longitudinal edges resting on and supported by the outer edges of the partitions and provided with attached hooks f, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the closed case A, having a series of partitions, a a, the detach- 6o able covers B,resting directly on the partitions, the strips 0, secured to the inner sides of the covers and fitting the spaces between the partitions and the walls of the case, and hooks secured to the said strips, substantially as described.

3. The combination of the closed case A, having the partitions "a a, one projecting outward beyond the other, the detachable covers B, resting directly on the partitions, the strips e, secured to the covers and fitting the spaces between the partitions and the walls of the case, and hooks connected to the said strips, substantially as described.

4. The combination ofthe closed case, A, 7 5 having the steps b b and the partitionsa a, one projecting outward beyond the other, .to correspond to the steps, and the detachable covers Bfresting on the partitions and having attached hooks, substantially as described.
