No. 386,523 6 Claims. (Cl. 33180) This invention relates to a guide device for use in applying photographic prints to backers or mounts and more particularly to a device by which the relative positions of the print and the mount or backer are accurately established so that application of the print to the mount in accurate registry is greatly facilitated.
While the guide device of the present invention may be employed in various ways and with various kinds of photographic prints and mounts or backers for such prints, a particular problem is presented in the case of Polaroid prints which are produced directly in the course of taking a picture. These prints are relatively thin and come from the camera in a damp condition so that the print surface cannot be touched or rubbed or wiped until after it has dried.
Relatively stiff paperboard backers or mounts for such prints are provided which have pressure sensitive adhesive on one surface, the adhesive surface being initially protected by a paper sheet which is peeled therefrom when the mount is to be used. Applying a photo print to the adhesive surface of such a mount in accurate registry after peeling off the protective sheet is diflicult since, once the print contacts a portion of the adhesive surface, it
cannot be shifted to correct misalignment. Since, in the instance referred to herein by way of example, the print and the backer are of the same length and width, any misalignment or lack of registry is particularly objectionable.
The device of the present invention provides a pair of adjacent registering pocket formations for receiving, respectively, a mount and a photo print with the adhesive surface of the mount and the reverse side of the print in facing but preferably slightly spaced relationship. Major portions of the walls of the registering pockets are cut away so that the user may freely press the print and mount into close surface engagement when the print is sufiiciently set and dry to permit touching the print surface.
While several specific embodiments of the principles of the present invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawing and described in the following specification, it is to be understood that such embodiments are by way of example only and that various mechanical modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is limited only as defined in the appended claims.

FIG. 2 is an end view thereof from the open end of the device which is the lower end as viewed in FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2 but showing a modified guide construction.
Like characters of reference denote like parts in the drawing, and the numeral 10 designates a generally boxlike paperboard unit having a rear or bottom wall 11, side walls 12 and 13 and one end wall 14. Flanges 15 and 16 extend inwardly from the upper edges of the side walls 12 and 13 and a top flange 17 extends inwardly from the upper edge of top wall 14.
It will be noted that rear wall 11 is cut away substantially as indicated at 18 in FIG.'1.
In addition to the foregoing, the guide device of FIG. 1 is provided with a pair of intermediate flanges 20 and 21 which lie approximately midway between the rear wall 11 and the top flanges 15 and 16, as shown in FIG. 2. The flange members 20 and 21 are of angular cross-section, their shorter leg portions being adhesively secured along the interior surfaces of the side walls 12 and 13.
It will be noted that the intermediate flanges 20 and 21 and the top flanges 15 and 16 are progressively stepped back from the open end of the box-like member 19 to facilitate introduction of mounts or backers and photo prints. In FIG. 2 the numeral 22 designates a mount which has been introduced in the pocket formed by rear Wall 11 and intermediate flanges 20 and 21, the exposed adhesive surface of mount 22 being uppermost as viewed in FIG. 2. Likewise in FIG. 2, the numeral 23 designates a photo print which has been slid into the pocket formed by intermediate flanges 2t and 21 and top flanges 15 and 16, the top surface of the photo print 23 being uppermost as viewed in FIG. 2.
The mount and photo print are of the same Width and height in the present instance and it will be noted that they fit closely within side walls 12 and 13 and abut the interior surface of end wall 14 so that they are supported in accurate registry. Photo prints may be introduced to the guide device just as they come from the camera and the assembly comprising the guide, the mount and the print may merely be put aside until the print has dried sufliciently to permit handling, whereupon the user grasps the mount and print through the opening 18 and the generally open top side of the guide device and presses the print and mount into adhesive securement. In this way substantial areas of the print and mount may thus be pressed together, whereupon the print and mount are jointly withdrawn from the guide device, their registry being now accurately established, and the remaining portions of the print and mount may then be pressed together to complete the mounting of the print.
In FIG. 3 a similar guide device is designated generally by the numeral 30, this embodiment differing from the embodiment of FIGS. 1 and 2 only in the fact that it is adapted to be formed as a single unitary plastic molding embodying the various structural parts and formations described above in connection with the first embodiment.
In FIG. 3 the bottom wall is designated 31, the side walls 32 and 33, the top flanges 35 and 36, and the intermediate flanges 49 and 41. The device 3% of FIG. 3 is provided with an end wall corresponding to the wall 14 of FIG. 1 and a top flange corresponding to the top flange 17 of FIG. 1. An opening 38 in bottom wall 31 of the member 31) corresponds to the opening 18 in the embodiment of FIG. 1.
I claim:
1. A sheet mounting device comprising a relatively flat rectangular holder having a back wall with two side walls and one end wall extending at right angles therefrom, flanges extending from the outer edges of said walls inwardly over said back wall spaced from said back wall and generally parallel thereto, and a pair of flanges extending inwardly from said side walls substantially medially of said back wall and said first mentioned flanges to form a pair of superposed channels along the interior of each side Wall, said channels being adapted to receive the opposed side edges of a pair of sheet members in superposed relationship and locate the same in accurate super position, said back wall having an opening ex tending inwardly from the edge thereof opposite to said end wall and said side wall flanges being laterally spaced to form a substantially open front side, whereby a user may grasp said sheet members through said opening and the open front side of said device and Withdraw them jointly from said holder.
2. A sheet mounting device comprising a relatively flat rectangular holder having a bottom wall with two side walls and one end wall extending upwardly at rig-ht angles therefrom and a substantially open front side, flanges extending from the upper edges of said side walls inwardly over said bottom wall and spaced therefrom and from each other, said bottom wall having an opening extending inwardly from the edge thereof opposite to said end wall, and a pair of laterally spaced flanges extending inwardly from said side walls substantially medially of said bottom wall and said first mentioned flanges to form a pair of superposed channels along the interior of each side wall, said channels being adapted'to receive the opposed side edges of a pair of sheet members in superposed relationship to locate the same in accurate superposition.
3. A sheet mounting device comprising a relatively flat rectangular holder having a back wall with two side walls and one end wall extending at right angles therefrom and a substantially open front side, flanges extending from the outer edges of said walls inwardly over said back wall and spaced from said back wall to form internal channels at said two sides and one end with said side wall flanges being laterally spaced, said back wall having an opening extending inwardly from the edge thereof opposite to said end wall, and a pair of laterally spaced flanges extending inwardly from said side walls substantially medially of said back wall and said first mentioned flange-s to divide said side channels into a pair of adjacent grooves along the interior of each side wall, said grooves being adapted to receive the opposed side edges of a pair of sheet members in superposed relationship and locate the same in accurate superposition.
4. A sheet mounting device comprising a relatively flat rectangular holder having a bottom wall with two side walls and one end wall extending upwardly at rig-ht angles therefrom and a substantially open front side, flanges extending from the upper edges of said side walls inwardly over said back wall and spaced from said back wall and from each other to form internal channels at said two sides, said bottom wall having an opening extending inwardly from the edge thereof opposite to. said end Wall, and a. pair of laterally spaced flanges extending inwardly from .said, side walls substantially medially of said bottom wall and said first mentioned flanges to divide said side channels into a pair of adjacent grooves along the interior of each side wall, said grooves being adapted to receive the opposed side edges of a pair of sheet members in superposed relationship and locate the same in accurate superposition.
5. A sheet mounting device comprising a relatively flat rectangular box-like holder open at one end and having a pair of laterally spaced adjacent internal channel formations extending along each of its opposite sides for receiving a pair of rectangular sheets in superposed relation therein, said holder having substantial openings in the opposed flat walls thereof extending inwardly from the open end of said holder whereby a pair of sheets in said holder may be grasped jointly over a substantial area and Withdrawn from said holder.
6. A mounting device for accurately aligning two sheets in superposition comprising a flat rectangular holder having a back wall with two side walls and one end Wall extending at right angles therefrom and a substantially open front side, a flange extending from an inner face of one of said walls intermediate the edges thereof to form locating ledges along the inner face of said one wall on opposite sides of said flange, said flange extending inwardly over and in generally parallel spaced relation to a portion of said back wall to form a sheet member receiving pocket, said locating ledges cooperating with the inner faces of the other walls for respective abutting engagement with marginal edges of a pair of sheet members in superposed relation to locate said sheet members in accurate superposition with said flange disposed between a portion of the superposed sheet members, said back wall having an opening in a portion thereof not covered by said flange whereby a user may grasp said sheet members through the open front side and said opening and press them into registering engagement.

Claims (1)

1. A SHEET MOUNTING DEVICE COMPRISING A RELATIVELY FLAT RECTANGULAR HOLDER HAVING A BACK WALL WITH TWO SIDE WALLS AND ONE END WALL EXTENDING AT RIGHT ANGLES THEREFROM, FLANGES EXTENDING FROM THE OUTER EDGES OF SAID WALLS INWARDLY OVER SAID BACK WALL SPACED FROM SAID BACK WALL AND GENERALLY PARALLEL THERETO, AND A PAIR OF FLANGES EXTENDING INWARDLY FROM SAID SIDE WALLS SUBSTANTIALLY MEDIALLY OF SAID BACK WALL AND SAID FIRST MENTIONED FLANGES TO FORM A PAIR OF SUPERPOSED CHANNELS ALONG THE INTERIOR OF EACH SIDE WALL, SAID CHANNELS BEING ADAPTED TO RECEIVE THE OPPOSED SIDE EDGES OF A PAIR OF SHEET MEMBERS IN
