Maclnnes, 28200 Westbrook, Farmington, Mich. 48024 Filed Dec. 31, 1964, Ser. No. 422,703 3 Claims. (Cl. 15-111) This invention relates to a combined surface cleaning and surface scraping device.
An object of the present invention is to provide a combined surface cleaning and surface scraping device which lends itself to ready assembly and disassembly.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a combined surface cleaning and surface scraping device wherein the scraper attachment and handle may be applied to either side of the brushing element.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a combined surface cleaning and surface scraping device which is simple, highly efficient in action, and commercially feasible.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the combined surface cleaning and surface scraping device according to the present invention.
FIGURE 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of FIGURE 1, the dotted-line showing indicating the reversed position of the scraper attachment.
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view of the assembly of FIG- URE 2, but showing the backing having a rounded upper face.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral generally designates a combined surface cleaning and surface scraping attachment of the present invention, the device comprising a brushing element 12 and a scraper attachment 20 operatively connected to the brushing element 12.
The brushing element 12 includes a rigid elongated backing 11 having opposed side edges 13, an end edge 14 connecting each of the adjacent ends of the side edges 13 together, and bristles 15 extending over and projecting from the underface of the backing 11. The backing 11 is provided with diverging sockets 16 which lie along the transverse center line thereof and open out of the upper face of the backing 11, the sockets being each provided with threads extending therearound.
The scraper attachment 20 comprises an elongated base plate member 21 having opposed side edges 22, the plate member 21 being of a length to extend along one of the side edges 13 of the backing 11 and of a width to extend from one side edge 13 of the backing 11 to a point adjacent to and spaced from the other side edge 13 of the backing 11. The plate member 21 is provided with an opening 27 Which lies along the transverse center line thereof. A first leg 23 extends along and projects perpendicularly from one of the side edges 22 of the plate member 21, and a sloping apron 24 extends along and projects from the free edge of the leg 23, the free edge of the leg 23 being shaped to a knife edge 25, as shown on the drawing. A second leg 26 extends along and projects perpendicularly from the other of the side edges 22 of the plate member 21, the second leg 26 extending perpendicularly in a direction opposite to the first leg 23.
The scraper attachment 20 is disposed so that the first leg 23 extends along and abuts against one of the side edges 13 of the backing 11 with the opening 27 in the plate member 21 overlying and in registry with one of the sockets 16 and resting upon the upper face of the plate member 21 and the second leg 26 projecting away 3,307,212 Patented Mar. 7, 1967 from the plate member 21. A fastening element 30 extends through the registering socket 16 and opening 27 and through an aperture 28 provided in the apron 24 and is detachably secured to the plate member 21, and a handle 35 having an end portion 36 extending into and removably attached to the other of the sockets 16 as by threads on the end portion 36 in releasable threaded engagement with the complemental threads extending about the other of the sockets 16. The scraper attachment 20 may be reversed so that it appears as illustrated in dotted lines in FIGURE 2.
Specifically, the fastening element 30 embodies an elongated hook-shaped shank 31 having the portion 32 adjacent one end provided with threads and having the portion adjacent the other end shaped to a lip 33. The shank 31 is positioned so that the intermediate part extends through the registering socket 16 and opening 27 with the threaded end portion 32 projecting above the plate member 21 and the other end portion extending through and out of the aperture 28 provided in the first leg 23 with the lip 33 overlying and engaging the first leg 23. A Wing nut 35 is in threaded engagement with the threaded end portion 32 of the shank 31 and detachably engages the plate member 21.
The bristles 15 of the brushing element 12 serve as a scraper for cleaning a surface, the knife edge 25 of the apron 24 serves as scraper for cleaning a surface, and the free edge of the second leg 26 serves as a scraper for cleaning debris from the soles and heels of a shoe 40 of a user as illustrated in FIGURE 1.
It is to be noted that the upper face of the backing 11, as illustrated in FIGURES 1 and 2, is flat, whereas the upper face of the backing 11', the form illustrated in FIGURE 3, is rounded.
The thus described surface cleaning and surface scraping device possesses novel advantages in that, because of the scraper attachment being applicable to either side of the brushing element and the handle being positionable to either side of the brushing element, it is possible to use such device until the bristles have been worn substantially evenly on both sides to a point contiguous to the underside of the brush backing, and in that the device provides to the user a scraping surface for cleaning the soles and heels of his shoes of adhering debris.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination with a brushing element including a rigid elongated backing having an under and an upper face, opposed side edges, an end edge connecting each of the adjacent ends of the side edges together, and bristles extending over and projecting from the under face of said backing, there being diverging sockets lying along the transverse center line of said backing and opening out of the upper face of said backing, of a scraper attachment comprising an elongated base plate member having opposed side edges, said plate member being provided with an opening lying along a transverse center line, a first leg extending along and projecting perpendicularly from one of the side edges of said plate member, a sloping apron extending along and projecting from the free edge of said leg, the free edge of said apron being shaped to a knife edge, and a second leg extending along and projecting perpendicularly from the other of the side edges of said plate member, said second leg extending perpendicularly in a direction opposite to said first leg, said attachment being disposed so that the first leg extends along and abuts against one of the side edges of said backing with the opening in the plate member overlying and in registry with one of the sockets resting upon the upper face of said plate member and the second leg projecting away from said plate member, a fastening element extending through said registering socket and opening and through an aperture provided in said first leg and detachably secured to said plate member, and a handle having an end portion extending into and removably attached to the other of the sockets, said bristles serving as a sweeper for cleaning a surface, said knife edge of said apron serving asa scraper for cleaning a surface, and the free edge of said second leg serving as a scraper for cleaning debris from the soles and heels of a shoe of a user.
2. The combination according to claim 1 wherein said plate member is of a.length to extend along one of the side edges of said backing and of a width to extend from said one side edge of said backing to a point adjacent to and spaced from the other side edge of said backing.
3. The combination according to claim 1 wherein the shank having the portion adjacent one end provided with threads, the shank being positioned so that the intermediate part extends through the registering socket and opening with the threaded end portion projecting above said plate member and the other end portion of the shank extending through and out of the aperture provided in said first leg, and a nut in threaded engagement with the threaded end portion of said shank and detachably engageable with said plate member.

Claims (1)

1. IN COMBINATION WITH A BRUSHING ELEMENT INCLUDING A RIGID ELONGATED BACKING HAVING AN UNDER AND AN UPPER FACE, OPPOSED SIDE EDGES, AN END EDGE CONNECTING EACH OF THE ADJACENT ENDS OF THE SIDE EDGES TOGETHER, AND BRISTLES EXTENDING OVER AND PROJECTING FROM THE UNDER FACE OF SAID BACKING, THERE BEING DIVERGING SOCKETS LYING ALONG THE TRANSVERSE CENTER LINE OF SAID BACKING AND OPENING OUT OF THE UPPER FACE OF SAID BACKING, OF A SCRAPER ATTACHMENT COMPRISING AN ELONGATED BASE PLATE MEMBER HAVING OPPOSED SIDE EDGES, SAID PLATE MEMBER BEING PROVIDED WITH AN OPENING LYING ALONG A TRANSVERSE CENTER LINE, A FIRST LEG EXTENDING ALONG AND PROJECTING PERPENDICULARLY FROM ONE OF THE SIDE EDGES OF SAID PLATE MEMBER, A SLOPING APRON EXTENDING ALONG AND PROJECTING FROM THE FREE EDGE OF SAID LEG, THE FREE EDGE OF SAID APRON BEING SHAPED TO A KNIFE EDGE, AND A SECOND LEG EXTENDING ALONG AND PROJECTING PERPENDICULARLY FROM THE OTHER OF THE SIDE EDGES OF SAID PLATE MEMBER, SAID SECOND LEG EXTENDING PERPENDICULARLY IN A DIRECTION OPPOSITE TO SAID FIRST LEG, SAID ATTACHMENT BEING DISPOSED SO THAT THE FIRST LEG EXTENDS ALONG AND ABUTS AGAINST ONE OF THE SIDE EDGES OF SAID BACKING WITH THE OPENING IN THE PLATE MEMBER OVERLYING AND IN REGISTRY WITH ONE OF THE SOCKETS RESTING UPON THE UPPER FACE OF SAID PLATE MEMBER AND THE SECOND LEG PROJECTING AWAY FROM SAID PLATE MEMBER, A FASTENING ELEMENT EXTENDING THROUGH SAID REGISTERING SOCKET AND OPENING AND THROUGH AN APERTURE PROVIDED IN SAID FIRST LEG AND DETACHABLY SECURED TO SAID PLATE MEMBER, AND A HANDLE HAVING AN END PORTION EXTENDING INTO AND REMOVABLY ATTACHED TO THE OTHER OF THE SOCKETS, SAID BRISTLES SERVING AS A SWEEPER FOR CLEANING A SURFACE, SAID KNIFE EDGE OF SAID APRON SERVING AS A SCRAPER FOR CLEANING A SURFACE, AND THE FREE EDGE OF SAID SECOND LEG SERVING AS A SCRAPER FOR CLEANING DEBRIS FROM THE SOLES AND HEELS OF A SHOE OF A USER.
