No. 385,002 5 Claims. (Cl. 242-117) This invention relates to hoists and more particularly to hoist drums.
Heretofore, hoist drums have been constructed with a long through running main shaft with webs welded around the main shaft to form the drum body. The long shaft is associated with inherent deflections under load which misalign the shaft bearings resulting in eccentric trouble of the brake path. In addition, the long shaft in the drum does not allow space inside the drum for sufficient circumferential drum supporting structure.
It is the general object of the present invention to avoid and overcome the foregoing and other difliculties of and objections to prior art practices by the provision of a hoist drum that does not require a long drum shaft.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a hoist drum which would lend itself to stronger overall support.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a hoist drum that would reduce manufacture costs.
The aforesaid objects of the present invention, and other objects which will become apparent as the description proceeds, are achieved by providing a hoist drum with a shaft. A cylindrical member is disposed at one end of the shaft and is rotated thereby. In addition, bearing means are disposed on said cylindrical member for supporting said cylindrical member.
For a better understanding of the present invention reference should be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views and wherein:
FIG. 1 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the-hoist drum of the present invention,
FIG. 2 is a vertical sectional view similar to FIG. 1 illustrating an alternative embodiment of the present invention.
With specific reference to the form of the present invention illustrated in the drawings, and referring particularly to FIG. 1, a hoist drum is indicated generally by the reference numeral ll-il. The hoist drum is formed with multiple plate means, such as circular end plates 12 and a circumferential plate 14. The circumferential :plate or tubular member 14 is attached, by welding or any other well known method, around the outer circumference of the circular end plates 12, as shown in FIG. 1, to form a hollow cylindrical member, such as the hoist drum 19.
In order to rotate the drum it), a short shaft 16 is attached by welding or any other well known means to one of the circular end plates 12. As shown in FIG. 1 the short shaft or drive shaft 16 does not extend inside the internal portion 18 of the hoist drum 10. For stability of rotation the short shaft 16 is provided with a flexible coupling 20. The short shaft 16 is connected to a motor and gear assembly 22 and is rotatably driven thereby,
In order to provide support for the hoist drum 10, support means, such as bearings 24, are disposed around the circumferential plate 14. The bearings 24 rotatably connect the hoist drum 10 to a fixed base (fixed relative to the hoist drum 10), indicated by the numeral 26 in FIG. 1, and thereby support the hoist drum 10 against load. In order to provide radial support to the circumferential plate 14, to prevent the circumferential plate or tubular member 14 from being collapsed radially inward by the pressure of load carrying ropes 28 disposed around the circumferential plate 14, support means, such as circular inner plates 39 and channels 32, are disposed in the internal portion 18 of the hoist drum 10 as shown in FIG. 1. The circular inner plates or ring means 30 and the ring shaped channels 32 are connected by any means, such as by welding, to the inner surface 34 of the circumferential plate 14 and thereby provide radial support to the circumferential plate 14.
It will be understood by those skilled in the art that with the short shaft 16 being positioned outside of the internal portion 18 of the hoist drum 10, there is additional free space in the internal portion 18 available to be utilized for axial support of the hoist drum 10. In addition, it will be understood that the use of the short shaft 16 will eliminate the deflections present in long shaft drums and will further substantially eliminate the attendant misalignment of the bearings.
It will be understood by those skilled in the art that alternatively as shown in FIG. 2 the hoist drum 10a can be constructed with only one end plate 12a. With the use of only one end plate 12a the hoist drum 10a will be provided with an open end 36a which open end 36a will facilitate initial fabrication of the hoist drum 10a as well as maintenance inspection.
It will be recognized by those skilled in the art that the objects of the present invention have been achieved by providing a stronger hoist drum that does not require a long drum shaft.
While in accordance with the patent statutes a preferred and alternative embodiment of the present invention has been illustrated and described in detail, it is to be particularly understood that the invention is not limited thereto or thereby.
I claim:
1. A hoist drum comprising:
supporting structure;
a tubular member;
an end plate mounted on and closing one end of said tubular member;
bearing means mounted on the outer periphery of said tubular member at opposite ends of said tubular member for rotatably supporting the drum and transferring a load on the drum directly to said supporting structure of the drum;
a drive shaft secured to and terminating at said end plate for rotating the drum; and
ring means mounted on the inner circumference of said tubular member for preventing said tubular member from being collapsed.
2. The drum of claim 1 wherein the other end of said tubular member is open.
3. The drum of claim 2 further including ring shaped channel members mounted on the inner circumference of said tubular member adjacent said ring means.
4. The drum of claim 1 .wherein the other end of said tubular member is closed by a plate.
5. The drum of claim 4 further including ring shaped channel members mounted on the inner circumference of said tubular member adjacent said ring means.

Claims (1)

1. A HOIST DRUM COMPRISING: SUPPORTING STRUCTURE; A TUBULAR MEMBER; AN END PLATE MOUNTED ON AND CLOSING ONE END OF SAID TUBULAR MEMBER; BEARING MEANS MOUNTED ON THE OUTER PERIPHERY OF SAID TUBULAR MEMBER AT OPPOSITE ENDS OF SAID TUBULAR MEMBER FOR ROTATABLY SUPPORTING THE DRUM AND TRANSFERRING A LOAD ON THE DRUM DIRECTLY TO SAID SUPPORTING STRUCTURE OF THE DRUM;
