Description
Jan. 17, 1967 H. J. MILAN BAND WHEEL SUPPORTS FOR SEWING MACHINE STANDS Filed March 16, 1964 I INVENTOR Henry J. Milan BY TORNEY WITNESS United States Patent 3,298,752 BAND WHEEL SUPPORTS FOR SEWING MACHINE STANDS Henry J. Milan, Clark, N.J., assignor to The Singer Company, New York, N.Y., a corporation of New Jersey Filed Mar. 16, 1964, Ser. No. 351,955 2 Claims. (Cl. 30815) This invention relates to sewing machines and more particularly to the provision of an improved means designed rotatably to support a band wheel on a sewing machine stand.
So called band wheels have been supported from leg members of sewing machine stands in many different ways. However, in the past, most leg members of sewing machine stands were made of cast iron and in many instances the support for the band wheel was cast as an integral part of the cast iron leg members. The use of bent tubular leg members of the form shown in the hereinafter mentioned copending patent application No. 495,012 are of fairly recent origin and therefore one of the objects of the present invention is to provide a band wheel support especially adapted for use with the bent rear portion of a tubular leg member of a sewing machine stand.
Another object of the invention is to provide an im proved means for rotatably mounting a band wheel on the leg of a sewing machine stand.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved and inexpensive means for supporting a band wheel from an offset portion of the tubular leg of a sewing machine stand.
With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, the invention comprises the devices, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings of a preferred embodiment of the invention, from which the several features of the invention and the advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is an elevational view of a portion of a sewing machine stand equipped with a band wheel support embodying the present invention,
FIG. 2 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view, taken on the line 22 of FIG. 1, and
FIG. 3 is an enlarged vertical view, partly in section, and taken substantially on the line 33 of FIG. 1.
As best seen in FIGS. 1 through 3, the improved band wheel support 15 of the present invention is shown as applied to a sewing machine stand 16 of a type similar to that described and claimed in copending patent application No. 351,954, filed March 16, 1964, in the names of J. W. Krein, H. 1. Milan and W. G. Hauser, which application was abandoned after continuation-in-part application Serial No. 495,012 was filed on Sept. 23, 1965. The portion of the sewing machine stand 16 herein illustrated comprises a tubular right leg member 17 having a front vertical tubular portion 18, a horizontal bottom tubular portion 19, and a bent rear tubular portion 21. The bottom portion 19 and a treadle support bar 22 are secured to a right leg support 23 by means of bolts and nuts 24. Also the band wheel support 15 carries a band wheel shaft 26 which in turn rotatably supports a hub 25 of a band wheel 27, the latter being driven by a pitman rod 28 and driving a band or pulley 29. One end of the shaft 26 has an annular cut for accommodating a C-ring 30. As best seen in FIG. 3, the tubular portion 21 of the leg member 17 has an angle bend of approximately 106 degrees and thereby comprises an upper reach 31, a lower reach 32, the reaches 31 and 32 being joined by the bend 34.
"ice
The band wheel support 15, comprises a 'band wheel shaft support bracket 41, a band wheel shaft locking bracket 42, a set screw 43, a plurality of self-tapping screws 44, and a pair of self-tapping screws 46. The screws 44 secure the support bracket 41 to the bent portion 21 of the leg 17, and the screws 46 secure the locking bracket 42 to the support bracket 41.
Specifically, the band wheel shaft support bracket 41 comprises a flat substantially triangular plate portion 51 provided with an elongated slot 52 and a pushed-out cylindrical nipple 53. Also opposite edges of the plate portion 51 are integrally formed with C-shaped or semicylindrical lugs 56 and 57 designed to engage the upper and lower reaches 31 and 32 respectively and each lug has two holes 58 for accommodating the screws 44. The band wheel shaft locking bracket 42 is substantially boxshaped in form and has a wall 61 provided with a pushedout cylindrical nipple 62, a wall 63 provided with a pushed-out internally threaded nipple 64, and a pair of end walls 66 and 67. One edge of the end wall 66 is integrally formed with an apertured lug 68 and one edge of the end wall 67 is integrally formed with an apertured lug 69. A-perturcs in the lugs 68 and 69 accommodate the screws 46, and the lugs 68 and 69 extend at an angle of degrees to the walls 66 and 67. Also one edge of the wall 63 is integrally formed with a lug 72 which extends in the same plane as the wall 63. When the locking bracket 42 is secured to the support bracket 41 by the screws 46 the lug 72 enters the slot 52 in the plate portion 51.
Engagement of the lug 72 with the slot 52 is advantageous during assembly of the parts and when the parts are in use. During assembly placing the lug 72 into the slot 52 helps guide the bracket 42 into proper alignment with the bracket 41. During use, the fact that the lug 72 is in the slot 52 helps to stabilize the relationship of the bracket 42 with respect to the bracket 41 and also helps to hold the bearing providing pushed-out cylindrical nipples 53 and 62 in proper alignment.
The band wheel support 15 is assembled and used in the following manner. The locking bracket 42 is attached to the support bracket 41 by entering the lug 72 into the slot 52 and then, by use of the screws 4646, the lugs 68-69 are fastened to the plate portion 51. When the bracket 42 is properly secured to the bracket 41 the nipples 53 and 62 are coaxial. Then the two C-shaped lugs 56 and 57 are placed to encompass portions of the reaches 31 and 32 and the screws 44 are used to hold the lugs 56-57 to the reaches 31-32. Thereafter, the shaft 26 is pushed into the hub 25 of the band wheel 27 until the C-ring 30 engages one end of the hub 25. Then the shaft 26 is passed through the cylindrical nipples 62 and 53 and the set screw 43 is threaded into the nipple 64 until the end of the set screw 43 clamps the shaft 26 in place. Next the pitman rod 28 and band 29 are assembled in the conventional manner.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is: I
