Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIDE,
HENRY F. BOND, OF VALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
MACHINE FOR SHARPENING FENCE-PICKETS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,960, dated July 30, 1861.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. BOND, of .Valtham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Sharpening fooden Fence-Pickets, called a Fence-Picket Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being` had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure I is a side elevation of the machine, Fig. II a front elevation of a portion of the machine.
A represents a cast iron frame; B, a plank to which A is secured; C, a shaft which plays perpendicularly in the frame A; c, a chisel secured to the shaft C; D, a lever to be operated by the foot which clasps the shaft O and is pivoted to it; E and F, slotted castings which are bolted to the frame A and may be set by means of nuts; G, an arm pivoted to the frame A and also to the short end of the lever D; H, a spiral spring to litt the shaft O as appears by comparison of Figs. I and II; I, block against which the picket rests when cut; J, trough which supports the picket and is adjustable by means of the slotted castings E and F; K, picket, one side of the end of which is represented as scarfed by the machine.
Having adjusted the trough to the vidth of the picket and to the desired bevel by means of the slotted castings E, F, the operator stands with the trough J at his left, and his right foot upon the lever D. The chisel is moved by this foot, while both hands arc free for feeding the machine with pickets. One side is scarfed and the picket is then turned for cutting the other side.
I do not claim as original the use of a lever for sharpening fence palings.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The application of the adjustable slotted supports for the trough J by which pickets of various widths can be cut, and with various bevels.
HENRY F. BOND.
