STOVE OR RANGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,416, dated October 27, 1885.
Application filed March 7, 1885. Serial No. 158,083. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM H. SwAN'roN, of Boston, (Cambridge,) in the county of MiddleseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Stoves or Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cook stoves or ranges; and it consists in a pivoted plate or fiap, forming the bottom or lower edge of the broiler'opening in the front of the stove over the fire-box, said flap being provided with means whereby it may be turned to throw the ashes accumulating on the bottom of said opening into the fire-box before the door covering the broiler-opening is opened, thus preventing the ashes from falling out upon the hearth of the stove, as I will now proceed to describe.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a portion of a range, taken transversely through the fire-box. Fig. 2 represents a front view of the upper portion of the range, showing the opening above the firebox. Fig. 3 represents a modification.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, a represents the fire-box of a cook stove or range, and 2 and 3 represent, respectively, the front and back firebrick linings thereof. The front of the stove is provided with the usual long and narrow opening for the insertion of a broiler above the front wall or lining of the fire-box, said opening having a door, I), hinged at one end to swing horizontally.
In this class of stoves the ashes accumulating on the surface between the front lining, 2, and the door 12 lie in contact with said door, so that when the door is opened the ashes will escape and fall on the stove-hearth, thus creating an objectionable litter. To overcome this objection, I provide a plate or ashdnmp, 0, formed to rest on said surface, and provided with a raised lip, c, at its front edge, which rests against the door. The plate is provided at its ends with lugs or trunnions (Z (Z, which rest in sockets in the ends of the casing of the door I). One of said trunnions has a crank or handle, d, whereby the plate may be turned upwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. This movement of the plate cthrows or dumps all the ashes that may have lodged thereon backwardly into'the fireboX, so that when the door is opened no ashes can escape.
The ash-dump, when restored to its normal position (shown in full lines in Fig. 1,) presents a clean surface, so that in case a broiler is inserted in the opening the food held by it will not be brought in contact with ashes if it touches the plate. A lug or stop, e, on the plate 0 prevents said plate from swinging over beyond the position indicated by dotted lines.
The lid or ash-dump 0 may be operated automatically by a connection with the door I), so that it will be thrown back by the first movement of the door when the latter is being opened, and will then fall to its normal position. To this end a lever, Z, may be pivoted to the door-casing and provided with teeth m, meshing with teeth 02 on one of the trunnions d.
To the upper end of the lever Z may be pivoted a catch, 0, which engages with a lug on the door I) when the latter is closed. Then the door is being opened, it pulls the catch 0 with it, thus turning the lever Z on its pivot and causing the teeth on n to turn the ashdump upwardly until an incline on the catch 0 strikes a fixed stud, p, which lifts the catch and disengages it from the door. The ashdump then returns to its normal position by gravitation.
I claim- 1. A stove or range having a front opening above the front wall of the fire-box, combined with the. pivoted plate or ash-dump, normally constituting the bottom of said opening, as set forth.
2. A stove or range having a front opening above the front wall of the fire-box, combined with a pivoted plate or ash-dump, normally constituting the bottom of said opening, and provided with a handle, (Z, or its specified equivalent, whereby said plate may be raised to remove the ashes, &c., as set forth.

3. A stove or range having a front opento thisspecification, in the presence of two ing above the front wall of the fire-box in subscribing witnesses, this 3d day of March, 10 combination with a pivoted plate or ash- 1885. dump, constituting the bottom of said open- 5 ing, and provided with a raised lip bearing WILLIAM SWANTON' against the door which covers the opening, Witnesses: as set forth.
S. LOUIE HULME, O. F. BROWN.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name
