In the type of apparatus to which the present improvements are applied the sugar liquor is introduced into the bottom of the filtering-chamber under sufficient pressure or vl head to enable it to make yits way upward through the column of bone-black contained in the Viiltering-chamber to the level of the outlets through which'it escapes from the upper part of the illteri ngchamber. The stratum 3o of y bone-black at the bottom of the column with which the sugar-liquor is iirst brought into contact as it enters the ltering-chamber -is'that which soonest becomes exhausted, and hence requires to be remored. When all por 3 5 tions of the bottom stratung; are removed at a uniform ratethe column of bone-black descendsl bodily by its own gravity, provided the horizontal area of the stratum which is removed is equal to the greatest area of the 4o column in horizontal section.
vThe present invention consists, essentially, of a movable supporting and discharging instrumentality,upon which the column of bone black contained in the filtering-chamber is supported at the bottom, andwhichgvhen appropriately moved, shears or cuts off from the l bottom of the column a stratum o f bone-black .y `of .prescribed thickness.
l The discharging; instrumentality may have 5o variousfforms; but the invention is present p when theiiltering-chamber and the discharging instrumentality are so constructed rela; tively to each other that the discharging instrumentality, when set in operation, eiiects the removal of the entire bottomistratum of a 5 5 column which is of uniform cross-area from top to bottom.
The accompanying drawings represent thesel improvements applied to apparatus for effecting the decolorization of sugar-liquor by the 6o process Otupu'ard filtration-through boneblack, of the kind in which the exhausted boneLbl-acl; and collected impurities removed from the bottom of the filtering-chamber vby the discharging instrumentality fall into an inclined receiving-chamber, by which they are conducted to the bottom of a well provided with a chainandbucket elevator for elevating the vexhausted bone-black and collected impurities from the bottom of the 7ol .-well, and discharging `them from the top of the well upon a chute, which is above the level of the outlets through which the sugar-liquor is discharged from the filtering chamber. The'sugar-liquo'r is supplied to the apparatus 7 5 through -a service-pipe, which is introduced into the well at a suitable distance below the chute, and the elevator-buckets are made of wire-gauze or are perforated,so that the sugar- 4liquor may drain from them during the latter 8o part of their upward journey. Thus the sugar-liquor passes down the well and upward through the lfiltering-chamber.
