J. W. SMITH. P131301: :FOR SHOOTING MARBLES- No. 328,348. Patented Oct. 13, 1885.
' WITNESSES ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICEB JAMES W. SMITH, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.-
P-ISTOL FOR SHOOTING MARBLES.
QEPECIFIGATIGN forming part of Letters Patent N0.328,348, dated October 13, 1885.
Application filed February 19, 1885. Serial No. 156,377. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. SMITH, of Jersey City, Hudson county, New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Pistol for Shooting Marbles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved pistol for shooting marbles.
The invention consists in parts and details, as will be fully described, and set forth hereinafter in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal inside view of one half of the pistol before the same is fired. Fig. 2 is a similar View, the pistol being fired. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal viewof the sliding rod.
The pistol is provided with a barrel, A, Open at both ends, and having a handle, B, on one end.
At the middle of the barrel an inwardlyprojecting stop-lug, O, is formed at the top, and at the bottom a circular pocket, D, projects from the barrel.
A coil-spring, E, on the pocket D has one end secured to a central pin, F, of the pocket, and the other end is passed through a slot, G, in the rear end of arod, H, in the pistol, heads J being secured on the front and rear ends of the rod H, the front head, J, beingin front of the stop-lug O.
A flat trigger, K, is pivoted in the rear end of the pistol, and part projects beyond the rear end of the barrel. Asuitable recess is formed in which the trigger can move.
A fiat spring-strip, L, in the barrel has one end secured on the barrel near the front end, and the rear end rests against the inner surface of the barrel at or near the lug C.
To load the pistol, the rod H is pushed back by means of a finger or a rod until the rear head drops slightly and catches on the rear end of the barrelA, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby the trigger is depressed, as shown in Fig. 1, and the coil-spring E is stretched. The ball or marble M is then pushed into the bar rel until it rests against the front head, J, the spring L preventing it from sliding out.
By pulling the trigger the rear head, J, is pushed upward and disengaged from the rear end ,of the barrel, and the rod H is moved to the front very forcibly by the spring E, which contracts, thereby ejecting the hall.
The pistol is formed of two halves, which are held together by screws. The rear head, J, strikes the check-lug O, which prevents the rod H being thrown .outward too far.
Guns can beconstructed in a like manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with atoy pistol or gun having its barrel open at both ends, of a rod in the barrel having a head on each end, a coil-spring held in a pocket on the under side of the barrel and connected with the rear end of the rod in the barrel, and of the trigger K,
the rear end of which projects beyond the rear 3 open end of the barrel, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a toy pistol or gun having its barrel open at both ends and having the internal stop, 0, of a rod in the barrel 5 having a head on each end and on opposite sides of said stop, a coiled spring held in a pocket on the underside of the barrel and connected with the rear end of the rod in the barrel, and of a trigger, K, the rear end of which projects beyond the rear open end of the barrel, substantially as set forth.
JAMES XV. SMITH. \Vitnesses:
