MAIL-BAG.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,034, dated October 13, 1885. Application filed January 13, 1885. Serial No. 152,757. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Louis 0. HUBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huber, in the county of Bullitt and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mail-Bags; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure l of the drawings is a side View of my device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and9are detail views. Fig. 10 is a perspective detail View of the mouth-bars, showing a portion of a bag attached. Fig. 11 is a detail plan view of the bars inverted and in an open position, and Fig. 12 is a similar view with the parts closed.

This invention has relation to improvements in mail-bags; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, A indicates a bag, which may be of any ordinary or approved construction. This bag is provided at its mouth with four bars or plates, 0 D and G D, which are hinged together at their adjacent ends, the plates D D overlapping the plates 0 0 when the mouth of the bag is closed. These bars or plates are composed of a vertical flange, a, and a horizontal flange, I), meeting each other in rectangular form. The upper edges of the bag are riveted to the vertical flanges a, respectively, there being a metallic strip, E, employed to receive the rivets of each respective plate. The strips are placed on the inner side of the bag in engagement with the inner walls thereof, and their transverse rivet-apertures correspond with those in the vertical flanges of the mouth-plates.

The joints F are peculiar in construction, the vertical flanges of the plates and bars 0 0 extending in a curved manner around the pivot-studs d, and the vertical flange of the plates D D cut perpendicularly, as at e, for the passage of the curved flange beneath the horizontal portion bof the said platesD D. By this construction it will be seen that the joints will be entirely closed when the mouth of the bag has been shut. The vertical flanges of the bars at their joints G are respectively cut perpendicular, so as to engage each other squarely when the mouth of the bag is closed, thereby holding all the joints in a closed position.

The horizontal flanges of the bars 6 and D are recessed at their ends on their upper sides adjacent to the bars 0 D, the object of which is twofoldnamely, when the mouth of the bag is opened, the bars 0 and D will seat themselves in the recesses of the said bars 0 and D, to lock the mouth of the bag in an open position; and the neXt advantage is to allow the plates or bars 0 and G and D D, respectively, to assume a level or plain position with relation to'each other, so that the bars 0 and C may pass beneath the horizontal portions of the bars D and D in closing the mouth of the bag.

The vertical flange of the bar G is provided on its inner side with a staple, F, adapted to enter a transverse slot in the vertical flange of the bar D for the attachment of a padlock or other suitable locking device.

H indicates a label or card holding device, which may be of the ordinary construction, having an open face to expose the card placed therein, and a flat or other suitable spring, I, for holding the card firmlyin position. This card-holder is adapted to be secured to the upper horizontal side of one of the mouth-bars by means of screws or the like.

I claim- 1. The combination, with a mail-bag, of the mouthplates G G and D D, pivoted or hinged together, the vertical flanges of the plates 0 and 0 being curved at the joints, and vertical flanges of the plates D and D cut perpendicularly at such points for the passage of the same, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with a mail-bag, of the mouth plates or bars, hinged as described, the horizontal flanges of the bars 0 and D being recessed on their upper sides at one end, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
