Description
Oct. 4, 1966 w. L. LEWIS ETAL SPOOL AND LIFTING MEMBER THEREOF Filed Aug. 13, 1965 INVENTORJ WILLIAM L. LEWIS ROBERT E. POMERANZ ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,276,717 SPOOL AND LIFTING MEMBER THEREOF William L. Lewis and Robert E. Pomeranz, Sanford, N.C.,
assignors to Roberts Company, Sanford, N.C., a corporation of North Carolina Filed Aug. 13, 1963, Ser. No. 301,805 1 Claim. (Cl. 242118.61)
This invention relates to double-headed bobbins of light weight, high impact resistance capable of operation at high rotational speeds with minimum vibration.
Heretofore bobbins or spools for textiles whether for cotton yarns or blends utilizing synthetic fibers have been prefabricated utilizing rather dense fiberboard composed of hard vulcanized fibre that are either cut or stamped out of sheets of material and trimmed on a lathe, and subsequently polished to the desired extent in order to provide an entirely smooth face and edge surf-aces resulting in many costly operations.
The objective of the present invention is to provide a relatively low cost and high quality spool or bobbin that requires a minimum of finishing operations, and one that is very light, well balanced dynamically which also has extremely high impact resistance and one that will operate at high speeds of rotation with minimum vibration eliminating the problems of poor balance and dynamic balancing characteristic of prior bobbins and spools.
Other advantages will be readily apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a spool embodying this invention;
FIG. 2 is an exploded and enlarged perspective view of each of the elements forming this new spool;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the bottom face of one of the flanges employed with this new spool; and
FIG. 4 is a perspective View illustrating a modified spool lifting member.
Referring to the drawing and more particularly to FIGS. 1 and 2, there is illustrated a spool or bobbin having a cylindrical or tubular member of suitable thickness, preferably constructed of a laminated phenolic plastic material or paper tubes that may be suitably surfaced to provide a smooth yarn receiving exterior. At the base of the spool is flange 11 of unitary construction molded in one piece to provide a rounded edge 12 on the upper face 13 from which projects the tubular member receiving hub 14 concentric with the circular permieter of the flange. The spindle receiving opening 15 extends axially through the hub 14. A plurality of openings 16 is provided in th end of the hub 14 to reduce the weight of the flange and to minimize or compensate for any unbalance by reason of weight distribution of the flange 11. The bottom face 17 of the flange 11 is provided with diametrically opposed driving .lugs 18 that extend radially inward within the spindle receiving opening '15. Spaced apart concentric ribs 19, 20 and 21 provide the requisite high impact resistance and stability to the base flange 11 together with the radially projecting inner series of ribs 22 extending from the inner circular rib 19 to the intermediate circular rib 20. The staggered radially extending ribs 23 extend from the intermediate circular rib 20 to the outer circular rib 21 that is coincident with the perimeter 24 of the flange 11.
An annular recess 25 is provided in the top face 13 of flange 12 for cooperatively receiving therein the terminal end 26 of the tubular member 10 so as to be securely fastened together with a suitable adhesive.
The upper flange 27, also preferably molded plastic, is a unitary structure in which the diameter may be smaller than the diameter of the lower flange 11. The
3,276,717 Patented Oct. 4, 1966 perimeter 28 of the upper flange is rounded to avoid cutting the fibrous materials. A concentric boss 29 is concentric with the spindle receiving opening 30 that extends axially through the upper flange and through the projecting tubular-receiving hub member 31 that is substantially identical in construction with the hub 14 and includes the recessed opening 16 in the terminal portion 32 of the hub. It will be noted that the flange 13 has on the hub 14 a spindle bearing surface 33 that is similarly provided in the upper flange 27 at the hub 31 to engage the upper portion of the spindle on which the bobbin or spool is supported.
A suitable plug 34 in the form of a cap made of plastic or other suitable material may be releasably supported at a suitable height within the opening 30 of the upper flange 27 or the circular top 35 may be flush with boss 29. The upper flange is also provided with an annular recess on the bottom face surrounding the hub 31 comparable to the recess 25 on the lower flange 13 for cooperatively receiving and retaining therein the upper terminal portion 36' of the tubular member 10 and securely fastened thereto by a suitable adhesive.
Where desirable, the plug 34 which has a hollow interior within the cylindrical portion and circular top 35 may be replaced with a handle or lifting member 36 provided with an enlarged top or cap member 37. It will be appreciated that the plug 34 and the lifting member 36 are molded preferably of the same material from which the flanges '11 and 27 are molded.
Thus, the spool construction eliminates the necessity for dynamic balancing, initially and subsequently after use, by the molded prefabrication of the flanges with the concentric recesses for cooperatively receiving the yarn receiving tubular member or barrel producing axial alignment of the components.
What is claimed is:
A spool for textiles of light weight, high impact resistance and minimal unbalance at high rotational speeds comprising a first circular unitary flange with one face having a concentric projecting tubular member-receiving hub with a spindle-receiving opening, the other face of said first flange having diametrically opposed drive lugs adjacent to said opening and a plurality of radially ex tending reinforcing ribs and concentric reinforcing rings of uniform thickness, a tubular member secured to said first flange over the projecting hub, and a second unitary flange having a concentric projecting tubular memberreceiving hub with a spindle-receiving opening therein, said second flange being securely fastened to said tubular member with said second flange hub extending thereinto, and a spool lifting member having a smooth exterior surface to be slidably and removably supported in said second flange opening.
