UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY FUSTIER, OF LYONS, FRAXCE.
MANUFACTURE OF FURS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,543, dated October 6,1885.
Application filed June 1 1885. Serial No. 167,132. (No model.) Patented in France August 8, 1884, No. 163,695 in Belgium April 24, 1885, No. 68,621; in England April 27, 1885, No. 5,186 and in Italy May 9, 1885, No. XXXVI, 275,
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HENRY FUSTIER, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Lyons, have invented an Improvement in the Manufacture of Furs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to producea new article for trimmings of dresses and other articles of apparel.
Strips and pieces of fur of different sizes and shapes have been employed for trimming dresses and other articles of apparel. This fur has been dyed and otherwise prepared for use, but the surface of the fur has been plain.
My improvement relates to fur, the surface of which is not plain, but is ornamented by figures applied to the surface of the fur, so that such fur is improved in appearance and better adapted to the trimming and ornamenting of dresses and other articles of apparel.
The animals skin is tanned or prepared in any ordinary manner, and where the fur is to be colored the dye is applied in any usual way. After the fur is otherwise ready for use, I subject the same to the action of dies of a proper size and shape to apply to the surface of the fur the desired design or designs by pressure. It is usually preferable to apply a sizing or an adhesive water-proof material to the surface of the dies before such dies are pressed upon the fur, in order that such material may adhere to the surface of the fur and vary the appearance of such surface.
This material should be of such a character as not to be influenced by moisture to which the fur may be subjected. The dies made use of are usually to be heated, and with some qualities of fur the heated dies alone may be made use of for giving to the surface of the fur the desired ornamental or mottled appearance.
In the drawing I have illustrated my invention by the representation of a piece of fur having the aforesaid mottled appearance.
By my improvement the fur is not injured, but the appearance of its surface is completely changed, and the portions that are not subjected to pressure stand in relief, and those portions that have been subject to pressurereflect the light in a very different manner from the natural surface of the fur.
I claim as my invention- As a new article of manufacture, fur, the surface of which is figured and different in appearance in different places, the same being produced by the pressure of dies, substantially as specified.
The foregoing specification of my improvement in the manufacture of fur signed by me this 12th day of May, 1885.
HENRY FUSTIER.
