FIREPLACE-REGISTER.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,728, dated July 2, 1861.

Be it known that I, EDWARD A. TUTTLE, of the city of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fireplace-Register Frames or Stnn1nerPieces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 is a front view, Fig. 2 is a view of the back; Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line (F, F); Fig. a is a front view of the side section or piece.

The fronts or faces of summer pieces are constructed with reference to the accom plishment of two distinct objects, viz., to furnish an ornamental border frame for the warm air register or fret work at the center, and also to furnish, outside of such border, plain or reserve rim or flange, which is not intended entire, as a permanent part of the summer piece, but is to be used as a reserve, from which strips of greater or less width are cut, at the sides, in order to fit each particular summer piece, to one grate frame, as it is wanted for use.

My improvement relates to the so combining in separate parts, the reserve rims with the ornamental border frame, in the construction of summer pieces, that in their use, the warming apparatus at the center shall not be interfered with, while at the same time, the necessity for cutting and fitting or piecing, shall be obviated and the article be made ready for use, by a simple process of adjustment.

A, Fig. 1 is the inner frame, and is molded and ornamented in any desirable manner, the space E is to be occupied by the fret work of the summer piece or hotair register.

5, Z), are the outside pieces so constructed that they will slide behind and upon the frame A, and are secured to said frame by means of the set screws (5, cl, cl, 01, passing the summer piece is extended to its full width. Said side pieces may be molded and ornamented and slide in front of the frame instead of behind it, if desired, the slots being in that case in the frame A. To form the break joint, the part j at the top, which hides the opening, (as the side pieces slide apart,) may be placed behind the side pieces and be attached to or form a part of one, and slide behind the other, in adjusting them, if preferred. These side pieces may be made with square heads as shown by the dotted lines, to fit straight sided grate frames.

The operation is as follows, to wit: The set screws (Z, (Z, (Z, (Z, are to be loosened and the outside pieces adjusted to the desired width, and the screw tightened when the frame is ready for use.

I do not claim absolutely closing an opening by constructing the piece designed for that purpose, in parts, connected by set screws and slots.

WVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is As a new article of manufacture, the summer piece made ready for use, by the arrangement and combination of the reserve pieces 6, b, with the ornamental border A adjustable at points beyond the register opening, all substantially in the manner set forth.
