CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,590, dated September 22, 1885.
Application filed May 13. 1885.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT S. Reeves, of Millville, in the county of Cumberland and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in car-couplers, the object of the same being to provide a coupling by means of which cars of differentheights may be automatically coupled,
r 5 and whereby the same may be uncoupled without necessitating the entrance of a brakeman or other operator between the cars. A further object is to provide a coupling of this character which shall be simple and economical in construction and durable and efficient in use; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described,and pointed out 2 in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in plan and side elevation of my improvement, showing the link in position for coupling, and Fig. 2 is a view showing the go link secured out of possible contact with the adjacent link.
13 represents one of the beams'of the car,to which is centrally secured the bracket D, and a forward beam, 0, is likewise provided with 3 5 a yoke, E, the ends being secured to the beam,
thus forming a closed guide.
To the bracket D is pivotally secured the rear end of the draw-head F, the forward end of the same passing through the yoke E,where- 40 by it is confined relative to its vertical and lateral play. The forward end of the drawhead is bifurcated, thus adapting it to receive the rear end of the link G, which is pivoted between the arms of the draw-head, as shown at H.
The forward end of the link G is provided with the arrow-shaped head H, with the beveled faces thereof on a horizontal plane with the body of the car, whereby the link is adapted to engage an approaching link of similar (No model.)

To the rear portion of the link G is rigidly secured one end of the yoke H, the opposite end of said yoke being provided with the perforation I, which is adapted to engage the free end of the rod or pin J, which is rigidly secured at one end to the drawhead F. The pin J is provided with a spiral spring, K, which encircles the same, the ends thereof impinging against the draw-headF and the yoke H, respectively, whereby the end of the yoke which is secured to the link is caused to bear against one side of the draw-head, and consequently hold the link in direct adjustment 6 5 therein. The bar H is pivoted on the end of the yoke, thus permitting it to be in direct adjustment on the pin J when the yoke proper is in oblique adjustment.
To the free end of the link G is secured the chain L in any preferred manner, the opposite end of the said chain being secured to the lower end of the lever M, the said lever being pivotally secured to one end of the car. Thus it will be seen that when it is desired to uncouple the cars, by canting the lever to one side it will cause the link to become disengaged.
The upper portion of the draw-head F is provided with the recess N, in which is pivot ally secured the link 0, the said link being adapted to receive a pin, and when it is necessary to use a link of this character the link G is locked out of'possible engagement by means of the lever M, which is canted to one side and secured in such position on the rock-bar P, which is secured to the top of the car, as shown; or, if the couplingshould be attached to a box-car, the lever may be arranged differently, as, for instance, it may be secured to 0 the side of the car in any suitable manner.
It will be seen that by employing the spring K, when the link is drawn to one side and uncoupled, the spring will immediately cause the link to return to its original position in the 5 draw-head, and so be in readiness for coupling.
I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown anddescribed, but consider myself at liberty 10o to make such changes and alterations as properly fall within the spirit and scope of my in- "ention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters whereby the link is locked outof coupling adjustment, substantially as set forth.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a carcoupler consisting, essentially, of the drawhead having two recesses therein, a laterallymovable link or hook-coupler, and the link 0, the said hook-coupler and link being secured atone end within their respective recesses, and a spring for holding the hook-coupler in position to engage a similar hook on the next car, substantially as set forth.
