DISTRIBUTING MECHANISM FOR SEEDING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,125, dated August 25, 1885.

Be it known that I, Cuantas L. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jamestown, in the county of Chatauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Distributing Mechanism for Seediug-lllachines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in whichd Figure I is a perspective view of my improved feed or distributing device for seeding-machines. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line x in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional View taken on the line y y in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is aview illustrating in perspective the several parts comprising my invention separated or detached from each other; and Fig. 6 is a side view showing the relative positions of the flange, the toothed rim, and the dustescape.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to seeding-machines; and it has for its object to provide a feed or distributing mechanism for the same, which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the casing of my improved distributer, which may be constructed of two parts, B B', suitably bolted or otherwise secured together. One of the parts, B, has a cylindrical opening, C, provided with a ange, D, at its outer end, and in. which is seated a revolving rim, E, provided on its inner side or periphery with ribs or teeth F F.
G is a disk having teeth H, and notches titting the ribs of the rim E, and having a hub, J, secured tothe shaft I. This shaft is movable laterally by any suitable means, and by (Modul.)
said movement the disk G is moved in the opening C, and the quantity of grain to be distributed is regulated. The object of having the opening only provided with a flange, instead of closed, is to permit the line dust that will find its way into the opening between the rim E and disk G to escape, and not interfere with the operation of the disk G.
To further assist the dust to escape, an opening, D', is made in the lower outer part of the part B, extending a slight distance into the flange D, which allows the rim E to force the'xdust out as fast as it works between the disk G and rim E. If the dust were allowed to accumulate in the seed-cup, as it does where the seed-cup has a bottom, it would act as a cushion and prevent the opening of thedistributer to its fullest extent.
The disk G is mounted upon a transverse shaft, I, which is transversely or laterally adj ustable by any suitable mechanism. By means of this shaft the disk G is transversely adjustable in the rim E,which latter will also revolve together with the said disk. Disk G has a hub, J, by which it is secured upon the shaft I, and the latter is provided, adjoining the said hub, with a collar, K, between which and the said hub is tted-a loose ring, L, having an arm, M, extending over the hub J, and forming a cutoff.
The part B of the casing is provided with a curved, funnel-shaped recess or opening, N, the upper end of which is to be arranged in a position to correspond with the bottom of the seed-hopper. Said part B also has a recess, O, for the escape of the seed. rIhe upper ends of the parts B B of the casing are provided with flanges, I, having perforations Q, to receive bolts or other means for the attachment of the device to the frame of the machine. The part B of the casin g is also provided with a slot, R, to receive the cutoff M when the shaft I is adjusted laterally for the purpose of adjusting the disk G within the-rim E.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood.
rIhe construction is simple and inexpensive, and of such a nature that the device will operate with ease and certainty. By adjusting the plate or disk G laterally within the rim E the IOO distance between the said plate or disk and the part B of thecasing will be regulated, thereby regulating the quantity of seed to be dropped. The device is convenient and durable, easily adjusted and manipulated, and it :may be attached to seedingmachines at a small expense.
I am aware that distributers have been made with a seed-cup having a bottom fitting the shaft and revolving with it; but I do not claim such construction, broadly; but- I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a distributing device for seeding-machines, the combination of a casing having an open-ended cylindrical recess, said casing having an inwardly-projecting ilange at the open end of said recess, an inwardly-ribbed rim arranged to revolve in said recess, a toothed disk laterally adjustable Within said rim, and
entrance and exit openings for the seed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a distributing device for seeding-machines, the combination of a casing having an open-ended cylindrical recess, said easing having an inwardly-projecting ange at the open end of said recess, and being also provided With-.a hole at its lowest portion, D', suitable distributing device operating Within said recess, and entrance and exit openings for the seed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
