Description

(No Model.)
J. L. BRADLEY &.R. T. SMITH.
JIB HANK.
No. 325,047. Patented Aug. 25, 1885.
JlB-HANK.
NITE TATES PATENT OFFICE-O JOHN L. BRADLEY AND RILEY T. SMITH, OF NEIV HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,047, dated August 25, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beitknown that we, JOHN L. 3RADLEY and RILEY T. SMITH, citizens of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have in,- vented certain new and useful Improvements in Jib-Hanks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the hank, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal central section.
This invention relates to an im 'n'ovement in that class of hanks which are attached to a ships jib, as a means of guiding the jib on its upward and downward movement on the jib-stay, and commonly called jibhanks, the object being the construction of a cheap and durable article that will ride freely and easily on the jib-stay without the ordinary wearing away of the material, as in the common construction, and also providing a means by which the hank can have a firm bearing upon the jib and be rigidly attached thereto.
The invention consists in the construction of the hank, as hereinafter described, and recited in the claims.
A represents the hank, which is made from any suitable metal, iron being preferable, From the neck or narrow portion of the hank, as at a, two cars or projections B B extend outward, perforated at their outer ends for the insertion of a pin, 1), on which a roller, 0, is hung. The said roller 0 is loosely hung on the pin 7), revolving freely thereon in its contact with the jibstay, and by presenting its entire circumference for wear not only overcomes the difficulty of the wearing away of the material by long usage, as in ordinary hanks, but also lessens the wear upon the jibstay.
From the neck or narrow portion a the hank extends inward, slightly increased in width. Midway between the neck portion and the extreme inner end projeo 5 tions, 0 c, in longitudinal section, are formed to give a more perfect bearing surface for the attachment of the hank to the jib. At the inner end a triangular cut or groove is formed to grasp the jib. By the formation of the projections c c a considerable bearing-surface is obtained and a more perfect attachment provided for.
As a convenience for attaching the hank to thejib, eyes (I d are formed at the inner end of the hank, by means of which attachment can be made in the well-known manner.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein-described jib-hank, consisting of the neck portion a, forwardly-projecting ears B B, with a roller, C, hung between them, eyes d d, and the concaved face-projec' tions 0 0 between said eyes, substantially as shown.
2. In a jib-hank having the neck portion a, cars '13 B, with roller the rearwardlyprojecting eyes at d, with a concaved portion between them, as set forth.
3. In ajib-hank, the combination, with the neck portion a, and means for securing the device to thejib, of the forwaidly-projecting ears B B, separated at their ends and adapted to receive a roller, substantially as shown. 75
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN L. BRADLEY. RILEY T. SMITH.
