VBLOGIPEDE.
No. 824,828. Patented ug; 25,1888.
Unire "raras AUGUST FRITZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
VELOCIPEDE.
.BPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,826, dated August 25', 1885. Application liled Januar)` 20, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it 71mg/ concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST Fnrrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hobby-Horse rlricycles, of which thefollowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in hobby-horse tricycles; and it consists in the combination of a hobby-horse which has the neck and a portion to which the fore legs are secured pivoted to the body, a drivingwheel which is secured to the pivoted portion ofthe body, pedals and cranks for actuating the wheel, and small wheels that are attached to the rear legs of the hobbyhorse, and it further consists inthe construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter'.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal central sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detailed rear elevation of the driving-wheel and pedal mechanism and thepivotal rod, with the sleeve through which the rod passes in section.
Referring to the letters, c represents a hobby-horsc, which is preferably made as nearly as possible in the true form of a horse. The neck portion I), to which the head is attached, is made separate from the main body of the horse, as at x, and the portion c, to which the fore legs are attached, is also made separate from the main portion, as at y. A pivotal rod, (Z, passes vertically up through the p0rt-ions Z) c and the front end of the main portion. This rod (Z passes loosely through a metallic sleeve, e, which is secured in the main portion, and is connected rigidly to the pivoted portions Z) c by means of bolts f, which pass transversely through said pivoted portions and through the pivotal rod. The
sleeve e is provided with a shoulder, e', near its upper end, and a coiled spring, g, is placed on the rod ZZ, and bears between said shoulder and the lower pivoted portion, c. On opposite sides of the lower end of the rod (Z are secured standards h,which are curved at first forwardly, as at 7L', and then rearwardly, l
as at h2. In between the lower endls of these standards is journaled the driving-wheel i, which is provided with the double-cranked shaft k, to' which it is keyed. Pedallevers Z are pivoted to the standards, as :at Z", and links in connect these levers with the cranks, as shown. The rear legs are connected to the rear axle, u, by means of the ilat springs o,
and on the extremities of this axle are joni'-,
4crupper, as shown. By this arrangement the spring is made to look like a' portion of the crupper.
Ornamental trappings o are so disposed upon the horse as to conceal the dividing-lines x y, and a bridle is attached to the head of the hobby-horse, which enables a child seated upon the saddle to direct the course ofthe tricycle by pulling upon the reins and moving the head in either direction, as will be very readily understood.
The springs which are provided, as described, prevent concussions while riding over rough or uneven roads, and thus insure ease and comfort to the rider and avoid the danger of causing congestion of the brain, to which children are exposed who use the ordinary tricycles and hobby-horses now in common use.
The pedals are arranged so as to have a direct up-and-down motion, which is both healthful and pleasant to the child rider.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the body c, pivoted portions Z) c, pivotal rod (Z, having standards h depending therefrom, a driving-wheel that is journaled between the standards, cranks 7c, pedahlevers Z, and links m, for actuating the wheel and rear wheels, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the body a, pivoted portions b c, pivotafrod d, having;` standards In testimony that I claim the foregoing as h depending therefrom, spring g, and sleeve my own I have hereto affixed my signature in 1o e, a driving-wheel which is journaled between presence of two witnesses. l the standards, cranks lc, pedal-levers Z, and x 5 links m, for actuating the wheel, springs o, AUGUST BRITZ rear axle, n, and wheels p,.pivoted saddle v1, Witnesses: spring u, and a bridle attached to the head of ROBERT MITTER, the hobby-horse, substantially as described. ALBERT WOLTER.
