SPECIFICATION forming'part of-Letters Patent No. 324,439, dated August 18, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ISAAC N. WATSON, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Defiance, in the county of Defianceand State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences, of which the following is a specification, towit:

This invention relates to an improvement in portable fences; and it'consists in certain peculiarities of the construction and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinaftermore fully set forth and claimed.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which.

Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2, a transverse section, and Fig. 3 a detail, of my fence.

A represents the posts of my fence, which are two in number, having the ends of the rails B B laid one upon the other between them, and being secured together by bands of wire a a, passed around both posts between the rails. These posts are rested upon the ground, and at each set of posts is provided a pair of braces, O O, which are driven into the earth, and their ends crossed abovethe upper rail, as in Fig. 2, on top of which are laid the riders D D, as shown.

I am aware that fences have heretofore been made having a series of long and short posts strapped together by wires, with intervening space for the insertion of rails one upon the other, the spliced posts being sustained in position by supporting posts with wire bands, the longer post and supporting-post being secured together over a rider bya cross bar. I am also aware that fences have heretofore been made consisting of single upright posts, each single post having a pair of sidestakes and a brace and longitudinal rails, the

What I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is' The combination of the pairs of upright posts, the rails laid one upon the other between them, the wire bands passed around the posts between the rails, the braces driven into the ground and having their upper ends
