A. ALTMANN.
MATTRESS.
No. 324,349. Paten d Aug. 18, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
i ALOIS ALTMANN, OF MANITOWOC, WISCONSIN.
MATTRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,349, dated August 18, 1885.
Application tiled October 11I 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may con/cern.-
Be it known that I, ALois ALTMANN, a citizen' ofthe United States, residing at Manitowoc, in the county of Manitowoc and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification. l
, My invention relates to improvements in mattresses; and it pertains to that class which may be taken apart and packed in a small space for shipping.
My invention is explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1` represents a side view. Fig. 2 represents a top view. Fig. 3 represents an end view, and Fig. 4 a detail.
Like parts are represented by the same reference-letters throughout the several views.
A A are the side bars of the frame, which are rigidly connected together by the crossbars B B B B, the ends of which cross-bars B are secured to said bars by dovetail joints C O, (shown in Fig. 1,) land joints D D, (shown in Fig. 2.) The series of slats E E are supported above the frame formed by the side rails and cross-bars bythe four corner-posts E E upon the rounds G G. The ends of the rounds G G are loosely fitted in their bearings in the posts E', and adapted to turn-slightly therein as the centers of the slats E spring up and down. The centers of the slats are supported by spiral springs H H. The upper and lower ends of the springsH are kept in place by the 4o short studs I. The upper studs I are permanently attached to the cross-pieces J J, while the lower studs are attached to the cross-rails B. The cross-pieces J are attached to two of the spring-slats E, as shown, by bolts K.
When desirous, the cross-rails B B are detached from the side rails, A, when the slats are disconnected from the frame by withdrawing the rounds G G from the posts E', when said parts may be putup in a compact shape for shipping.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Vl. The combination of the mattress-frame consisting of side rails and crossbars, cornerpost-s E E E E', rounds G G, series of longitudinallyarranged elastic slats E E, secured at or near their ends to rounds G G, and central supporting spiral springs H, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the side rails, A A, detachable cross-bars B B and C O, posts E E E E', rounds G, tted to turn in the upper ends of said posts, series of elastic slats E E, cross-bars J J, and spiral springs H, interposed between said bars J J and bars B B, all substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALOIS ALTMANN.
