WITNEEEEE INVENTU flaw/flaw,
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VVILHELM UMLAND, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
UPRlGHT-PIANO CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,051, dated August 11, 1885 Application filed May 23, 1885. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom, it may concern:
6, and having a tendency to throw such arm Be it known that l, IVlLHELM UMLAND, of rearwardly. A small pin or stop, 2', may be the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Music-Rest for Upright Pianos, of which the following specification is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a new music-rest for upright pianos, which will be automatically put in the proper inclined position upon the opening of the lid or fall.
The invention consists in the various features of improvement hereinafter more fully pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of an upright piano-forte provided with my lIllPI'OVOll'lGllt, showing the lid open. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same with the lid closed, and Fig. 3 a rear view of the front plate.
The letter A represents an upright pianoforte of customary or suitable construction. a
is the front plate, and I) thelid, fall, or cover, adapted to close over the keys. The plate a is made with a large central opening of square or other shape, into which is fitted a panel, 0, of a size and shape corresponding to that of the opening. This panel turns on pivots that enga ge bearings at the back of plate a, as shown in Fig. 3. The panel 0 is provided near its upper edge with a rearwardly-extendii1g lug, (1, against the forward face of which bears one end of a lever, c, pivoted to a cross-piece, f. The lower free end of the lever e is placed opposite to a pin, 9, which is free to slide backward and forward within a groove formed in the frame A, and opening directly back of lid 1), as seen in Fig. 2. h is a spring placed between frame A and the upper arm of lever sunk into edge of lid 1) opposite to the pin g, if desired. 9' is a rest attached to the lower face of lid b, and serving to support the bottom of the music when the lid is swung up.
The operation of the device is as follows: When the lid 1) is down, (full lines, Fig. 2.) it pushes pin g backward, and this pin in turn causes the upper arm of lever c to be swung forward. The front edge of this lever-arm will now bear against the rear face of panel 0, and thereby hold such panel in its proper vertical position to close the opening in front plate, a. On the raising of lid 1), 'the spring h will be free to throw the upper arm of lever a backward, as the pin g may be pushed forward by the lower lever-arm. The upperleverarm, bearing against lug (I, will cause the panel 0 to be swung on its pivots and to assume the inclined position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. In this position the panel serves to support the upper portion of the music, the lower portion of which is supported on the rest j. In this way the entire music-rest is automatically put into and out of position on the opening or closing of the lid.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of open face-plate a with panel 0, lid I), ler'cr 0, spring h, and pin g, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of open face-plate a with panel 0, lid b, stop 07, lever 0, spring h, and pin g, and cross-piece f, substantially as specified.
Y VILHELM UMLAND.
