(Cl. 132-3) Our invention relates to scalp protectors, and more particularly to an accessory designed to protect the scalp of the user from contact with the conventional brush curlers or the like, used to retain the hair in a curled position.

The prime object of our invention is to provide an accessory that is simple in construction, easy to apply and easy to remove.

Another object of our invention, is to provide a device of the character described, that is integrally constructed in a manner to permit application between the strands of hair, yet act as a spacer between the scalp and the roller or curlers.

Still another object of our invention, is to provide a device that permits circulation of air between the brush type of curler and the scalp while in use.

Still another object of our invention is to provide a device that is inserted between a curler and the scalp and has means for enabling it to be securely held in position.

It is manifest to anyone familiar with placing hair onto conventional rollers, commonly referred to as curlers, that the curlers usually constructed of corrosion resistant perforated material such as metal or plastic, and usually provided with brushes of circular contour disposed longitudinally within the cylindrical, or tubular curlers, that by applying the hair to the outer peripheral surface of the cylindrical curler, there is a definite contact with the scalp, causing a coefiicient of friction therewith. It is the prime purpose and object of our invention, to provide a smooth tapered device integrally constructed, that may be applied to the base of the hair adjacent to the surface of the scalp, to permit air circulation between the scalp and the curler body. Another difliculty of devices which are of this nature is that they fall out of the hair easily if there is no means of holding them securely in the hair.

The device constituting our invention is of integral construction, may be easily applied and removed, and is easy to keep clean and in sanitary condition.

Other and further objects of our invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds, when taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the device showing its integral construction.

FIGURE 2 is a top view of the device illustrating the contact members and their spaced relation one to the other.

FIGURE 3 is a side view of the device showing its tapered contour.

FIGURE 4 is a perspective view showing the device in place, and its relation to the brush type curler unit, and

FIGURE 5 is a cross-sectional view of the device applied between the curler assembly and the scalp.

Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and referring now to' the same, the character 10, shows generally the body of the device constructed of molded plastic, or the like, and provided with a plurality of spaced apart prongs 11 disposed substantially transverse to said body, and tapered downwardly to points shown as 13. The upper face 14 of the device (see FIG. 3), is bevelled or tapered from the end 15 to the points 13, while the bottom surface shown as 16, is straight for contact with the scalp.

Each of the prongs 11 has a root portion extending from the body and parallel to each other to form reice stricted, substantially rectangular spaces 12 between adjacent prongs 11. The adjacent prongs near the root portions thereof angle outwardly and parallel with each other toward points 13 to define spaces 12 which are substantially wider than the rectangular spaces 12.

The device it), is applied between the brush type curler shown as 17, in FIGS. 4 and 5, and the scalp when the hairs shown as 18 are applied to the outer peripheral surface of the curler 17. Thus the device acts as a protecting means, and prevents contact of the brush curler with the scalp of the user, and permits air circulation between the scalp and the curler, and also prevents contact, or coeflicient of friction between the scalp and the curler assembly. For convenience and the most efficient protection of the scalp the scalp protectors are substantially the same length as the curlers. However, any length scalp protectors can be used in our invention. Also, the protruding portions of the scalp protectors are not spaced apart as far near the body of the scalp protectors as they are near the free ends of the protruding portions.

The device is very simple in construction, easy and economical to manufacture, and easy to apply and remove. Although we have shown a specific structure of the device, we are fully cognizant of the fact that many changes may be made in its shape, form and contour without aifecting its efliciency and performance, and we reserve the rights to make changes without departing from the spirit of our invention or the scope of the claims.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States 1. In combination: a hair curler having hair extending from a persons scalp wound therearound; and a scalp protector interposed between said hair curler and said scalp, said scalp protector having an upper face and a lower face comprising:

a body having an inner and outer transverse edge; and

a plurality of spaced apart prongs extending outward from the inner transverse edge of said body, said upper face of said scalp protector being tapered from the outer point of said prongs to the outer transverse edge of said body, said lower face of said scalp protector being substantially straight for tangentially contacting the scalp, each of said prongs having a root portion extending parallel to each other from the inner transverse edge of said body to form restricted rectangular spaces between adjacent prongs, said rectangular spaces being the narrowest spaces between adjacent prongs, adjacent prongs including spaces therebetween wider than said narrowed spaces, said scalp protector being retained securely by the hair inserted between said restricted rectangular spaces and said scalp protector preventing said hair curler from contacting said scalp.

2. A scalp protector which has a lower face and an upper face to be used in combination with a brush curler comprising:

a body having an inner and outer transverse edge;

Claims (1)

1. IN COMBINATION: A HAIR CURLER HAVING HAIR EXTENDING FROM A PERSON''S SCALP WOUND THEREAROUND; AND A SCALP PROTECTOR INTERPOSED BETWEEN SAID HAIR CURLER AND SAID SCALP, SAID SCALP PROTECTOR HAVING AN UPPER FACE AND A LOWER FACE COMPRISING: A BODY HAVING AN INNER AND OUTER TRANSVERSE EDGE; AND A PLURALITY OF SPACED APART PRONGS EXTENDING OUTWARD FROM THE INNER TRANSVERSE EDGE OF SAID BODY, SAID UPPER FACE OF SAID SCALP PROTECTOR BEING TAPERED FROM THE OUTER POINT OF SAID PRONGS TO THE OUTER TRANSVERSE EDGE OF SAID BODY, SAID LOWER FACE OF SAID SCALP PROTECTOR BEING SUBSTANTIALLY STRAIGHT FOR TANGENTIALLY CONTACTING THE SCALP, EACH OF SAID PRONGS HAVING A ROOT PORTION EXTENDING PARALLEL TO EACH OTHER FROM THE INNER TRANSVERSE EDGE OF SAID BODY TO FORM RESTRICTED RECTANGULAR SPACES BETWEEN ADJACENT PRONGS, SAID RECTANGULAR SPACES BEING THE NARROWEST SPACES.
