WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,325, dated May 14, 1861.
Be it known that I, J. Mount Bethel, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Tashing Machine; and I do hereby` declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making `a partof this specication, in which- Figure l, is a longitudinal `central section of my invention taken in the line m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate cor responding parts in t-he two figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a machine by which full' control may be had over the rubbing action, equally so, as if the rubbing were done manually as in the ordinary wash tub; and thereby prevent the clothes being injured by an undue rubbing and at the same time admit of the work being very expeditiously done.
The invention consists `in the employment or use of a horizontal rotating wheel in connection with a suds receptacle arranged substantially as hereinafter described' to eect the desired end. i
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a frame in which a suds box B, is secured, and C, is a vertical shaft which is also placed in the frame A, and has a horizontal wheel D, secured on its upper end. The wheel D, is on a `level with the upper part of the box B, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, and the wheel D, is encompassed by a plate E, which is flush with the upper surface or face of the wheel D. The wheel D, may be constructed of wood or metal and its upper surface or face iscorrugated or provided with ribs as shown in Fig. 2, or in any proper way.

On the shaft C, there is placed a bevel pinion F, into which a bevel wheel G, gears, the latter being on the inner end of a horizontal shaft H, which is placed in the frame A, and has a' crank or pulley on its outer end. The shaft H, is also provided with a crank I, to which a treadle J, is connected by a pit-man K.
From the above description it will be seen that the wheel D, may be rotated eitherby the hand or foot, or by other power if convenient. The operator stands by the suds box B, in which the clothes to be washed are placed, and as the wheel D, rotates the operator applies the clothes to its face occasionally dipping the same in the suds. The operation it will be seen is substantially the same as the ordinary hand-rubbing operaw tion, the labor of the latter however is avoided while all its advantages are retained, as for instance, the rubbing of certain parts more than others which in many pieces of clothing is very essential, as the collars and wristbands of shirts for instance. The clothes also may be subjected to a greater or less pressure as desired, and need not be in any wise injured by the friction or rubbing, as the operator may press the clothes more or less hard on the wheel D.
The machine is exceedingly simple and efficient and maybe constructed at a moderate cost, so as to be within the reach of all.
