SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,961, dated July 28, 1885.
Application filed January 30, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .latins NEALE, of the city of Bridgeport, in the county of Faireld and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewer-Gas Checks for Sinks, of which the following is a specification. y
My invention relates to means which are employed to prevent sewer-gas from escaping upward through the water -outlets of sinks; an d the objects of the invention are to provide a check which may be very readily applied to and removed from the strainer-protected outlet from the sink, and 'which will, when applied, absolutely prevent the escape of gas.
The invention consists, essentially, in a cap or stopper which may be applied to the top Vof the strainer outlet, and which has in its periphery notches to receive lugs or projections on the sink-bottom, and inclined or cam surfaces extending frorn said notches, and which, bythe turning of the cap or stopper, are made to engage with and pass under inclined surfaces on the lugs or projections, whereby the cap or stopper is pressed downward tightly upon the strainer when it is applied thereto and turned. To enable it to more effectively close the strainer, I prefer to face it with indiarubber or other packing material.
In connection with the perforated strainer and cap above described, I may also employ a cut-off valve, pivoted below the strainer and capable of being turned to close the strainerperforations. The stem of thisvalve projects upward through the strainer, and if the handle or knob on the cap or stopper,whereby it is turned, be provided in its top with a square or polygonal socket, it may be applied to the head of the valve-stem when the cap or stopper is inverted, and the cap or stopper may then be used as a handle to open and close the valve. t
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a portion of the bottom of a sink, the strainer being closed by the cap or stopper. Fig. 2is aplan of the strainer with (No model.)

AA designates a portion of the sink-bottom,
lwhich is formed with a circular rabloet, a, in
which is fitted a strainer, B, which is coinmonly secured in place by screws or bolts b. The sink-bottom has below the strainer-opening, a, a concave depression, A', which extends downward to form a nozzle, and has the waste-pipe connected with it in the usual way. The strainer B has a ii-at bottom surface, to which is fitted a perforated disk or cut-off val ve, C. This valve is secured to the strainer, as here shown, by a bolt or pivot, c, having at the top a head and collar or ange, c', and below the valve a nut and washer, c2. This bolt c forms a pivot or stem for the valve, and by a wrench or key applied to the head c of the stem, the stem and valve C may be turned to bring its perforation d into or out of coincidence with the perforations el of the strainer, and so open or close the strainer. In the valve C may be formed a notch, e, which receives a pin or stop, c', on the strainer, as shown in Fig. 4, and by this or other suitable means the turning movement of the valve is limited. D designates the cap or stopper which forms the gas-check. It may be of cast metal, and has a knob or handle, D', whereby it may be taken hold of. It has a recess to receive the head c of the stem or pivot c, and its face is covered with` india rubber or other packing material, i", which may be riveted thereto.
On the strainer '13, which may loe considered a part of the sink-bottom, are lugs or projections f, having inclined inner faces, and in the periphery of the cap D are recesses g, which receive the lugs f, and thus enable the cap to pass them in placing it on the seat. From the notches or recesses g extend inclines or cam surfaces g', and the inner sides of the lugs or projections j' are correspondingly inclined. Vhen the cap D is placed over the strainer and turned to the right, the inclines or cam surfaces g pass under the beveled orinclined lugs or projections f', and thereby the cap is pressed down upon the strainer and the holes IOO The knob or handle D has in it a recess or socket, d which, when the cap is inserted, may be applied to the head c of valve pivot or stern c, the capv being used as a handle to turn the valve C, as shown in Fig. 3.
XVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a sink having at the bottom a strainer-opening and lugs or projections f, of a cap or stopper for closing the strainer gas-tight, having the recesses g and inclines or cam surfaces g extending therefrom, lsubstantially as herein described.
2. Thecombination, With the sink-strainer B, provided with lugs or projections and a pivoted cut-ofi' valve, O, applied thereto, of a cap 0r stopper to be applied to the top of the strainer and provided with recesses and inclines or cam surfaces for engaging the lugs or projections on the strainer, substantiallyaszo herein described.
3. The combination, with-the sink'strainer and a pivoted cut-off valve applied thereto, of a cap or stopper to be Iapplied to the top of the strainer and having a knob or handle 25 whereby it may be turned, and a socket in the top of the knob or handle fitting the head of the valve-pivot, whereby the cap or stopper, when inverted, may be utilized as a handle for turning the valve, substantially as herein de- 3o scribed.
