(Cl. 229-52) The present invention relates to a device which holds the end flaps and side flaps of a conventional carton in carton-closing position and provides a handle by which the carton can be lifted and transported. The primary object of the invention is to provide a strong and inexpensive device for accomplishing the above purposes, so constructed that when it as assembled upon a conventional cardboard carton, the carton and its contents having a weight within the weight limits of the carton itself, can be lifted by the device without damage to the carton.
Further objects of the invention will appear as th description proceeds.
To the accomplishment of the above and related objects, the invention may be embodied in the forms illustrated in the accompanying drawings, attention being called to the fact, however, that the drawings are illustrative only and that change may be made in the specific constructions illustrated and described, so long as the scope of the appended claims is not violated.

In accordance with tne broader aspects of this invention, there is provided a combination carton-closing and carrying device comprising a first means attaching to the facing edges of the carton end flaps and a second means which is disposed to the first means in spaced-apart relationship whereby the first means is receivable between the carton end flaps and the carton side flaps and the second means overlies the carton side flaps. The second means has a handle portion by which the carton can be lifted and transported and at the same time holding the flaps of the carton in carton-closing position.
Referring to the drawings, and more specifically to FIGS. 1 through 4, there is shown a first embodiment of this invention comprising a pair of substantially identical channel members 28, a pair of substantially identical channel members 22 and a handle member 24. Chan nel members 28 have opposite and open ends 26, 28, a pair of parallel flange portions 30, 32, and a web portion 34 which interconnects and spaces apart the flange portions 30, 32 a distance 36 which is substantially equal to the thickness of an end flap of a conventional cardboard carton. Located at a medial position between the ends 26, 28 of the flange 3t and adjacent the web portion 34 is a circular opening 38. Flange 30, intermediate the position of openings 38 and the ends 26 and 28 has a means 31 for locally depressing flange 38 toward flange 32, thereby decreasing the distance therebetween.
Channel members 22 have opposite ends 40', 42, a pair of parallel and spaced-apart flange portions 44, 46, and a web portion 48 which interconnects and spaces apart flange portions 44, 46. Both flange portions 44, 46, intermediate ends 40, 42 and adjacent web portions 48 have a second circular opening 50, 52, respectively. Web portion 48 also has, intermediate ends 40, 42, a circular opening 54. Opening 54 is out of alignment with openings 50, 52, but adjacent the aligned posit-ion; however, openings 50, 52 are in registry with each other. All of the openings 50, 52, and 54 are adjacent a medial position between ends 40, 42 of channel members 22. Channel members 22 are similar to channel members 20 in shape and in configuration; however, channel members 22 are somewhat shorter in length than channel members 20. Further, web portions 48 are substantially wider than web portions 34 and flange portions 30, 32 are substantially wider than flange portions 44, 46.
Handle member 24 has opposite ends 56, 58, adjacent end portions 60, 62, and a gripping portion 64 intermediate end portions 60, 62; gripping portion 64 is spaced apart from ends 56, 58.
A member 22 and a member 20 are positioned adjacent each other in such .a manner that the openings 50, 52 are in registry with the opening 38. A cylindrical spacer 66 is inserted between members 20, 22. Spacer 66 has a constant diametered interior passageway 68, opposite ends '79 and 72, and a length substantially equal to the dis tance between flanges 30, 32. Spacer 66 is arranged with respect to members 22, 20 such that interior passageway 66 is in registry with openings 50, 52, 38. A pair of pivot rods 74 having opposite end portions 76, 78 are inserted through a member 22, a spacer 66 and a flange 38 of a member 20, respectively. End portions 76, 78 are enlarged beyond diametral dimensions of openings 50, 52 and 38 and the passageway 68, thereby swivelly connecting a member 22 to a member 20 in spaced-apart and substantially parallel relationship.
In a specific construction of this first embodiment of this invention, members 20, 22, spacer 66, pivot rod 74, and resilient handle member 24 can be made of metal, plastic, or any sufficiently rigid and self-supporting material having the requisite strength and the above-mentioned properties required to perform the useful purposes of this invention.
In operation, members 20 receive the facing edges of the end flaps 82, 84 of a conventional carton 80 and the secured thereon by the means 31 which locally depresses flange 30 toward flange 32 and which bites into the end flaps 82, 84, respectively, of the carton 80. Members 22 are then rotated so as to be substantially perpendicular with members (as shown in FIG. 2). In this postion, the side flaps 86, 88 can be placed in carton-closing position spaced apart from end flaps 82, 84 by flanges 30. Upon rotating members 22 to a position substantially parallel to members 20, the flaps 82, 84, 86 and 88 of the carton 80 are all held in carton-closing position. Side flaps 86, 88 are secured between members 22 and flanges of members 20. Spacer 66 spaces apart the facing edges of side flaps 86, 88 as shown in FIG. 3. In this position, ends 56, 58 of resilient handle member 24 can be inserted through openings 54 in web portions 48 of members 22. Handle member 24, which is preferably formed of wire, thereby resiliently urges members 22 away from each other and prevents members 20 from sliding off from the end flaps 82, 84. On the other hand, members 22 secure handle 24 in an upright position with gripping portion 64 spaced apart from the side flaps 86, 88 of carton 80, thereby leaving room between the gripping portion 64 and the carton 80 so that one can grasp the gripping portion 64 to lift or transport the carton 80 and its contents.
Referring now specifically to FIGS. 5, 6 and 7, there is shown a second embodiment of this invention. In this second embodiment, there are a few parts that are similar to parts of the first embodiment, illustrated in FIGS. 1 through 4; these similar parts being referred to by like reference numerals. The second embodiment of this invention generally comprises a pair of channel members 20a, 20b, a support member 100, and a handle member 102.
Members 20a, 20b are identical to members 20 abovedescribed in reference to the first embodiment of this invention, excepting that circular opening 38 is omitted. In one member 20a circular openings 104, are positioned in flanges 30a, 32a, respectively, adjacent a medial point between ends 26a, 28a and adjacent web portion 38a and in registry with each other.
Supporting member 100 has opposite ends 108, 110, an opening 112 adjacent a medial position intermediate ends 108, 110, and a circular opening 114 adjacent end 110 intermediate end 110 and opening 112.
Members 102 has opposite ends 116, 118, a flange portion 120, a handle portion 122, a web portion 124 interconnecting and spacing apart handle portion 112 and flange portion 120. Adjacent a medial point intermediate ends 116, 118 and adjacent web portion 124 is a circular opening 126 in flange portion 120.
The aforementioned member 20a having openings 104, 106 there is positioned on member 100 in such a man ner that said openings are in registry with opening 114. This member 20a is swivelly connected to member 100 by means of a pivot rod '74 in the same manner as abovedescribed. Handle member 102 is positioned adjacent member 100 in such a manner that openings 112, 126 are in registry with each other. Spacer 66a, identical with spacer 66 in every respect except that its length is twice that of spacer 66, is positioned intermediate members 102, 100 in such a manner that passageway 60a registers with openings 112, 126. Members 102, 100 are swivelly connected in a spaced-apart and substantially parallel relationship, also, by means of a pivot rod 74 in the manner above-described.
In a specific construction of this second embodiment of this invention, members 20a, 20b, 100 102, spacer 66a and pivot rods 74 can be made of metal, plastic or any rigid, strong and self-supporting material.
In operation, this second embodiment of this invention functions similarly to the first embodiment. Members 20a and 20b can be secured on the end flaps 82, 84 of carton 80. Member 100 underlies both members 20a and 20b and maintains the flap 82 having attached thereto the member 20b which is not connected to member 100 in substantially horizontal position.
This member 20b not being connected to member 100 provides that the second embodiment of this invention is adaptable to be used on cartons having different spacings between end flaps 82, 84. Handle member 102 is rotated so as to be substantially parallel with member 100. In this position, side flaps 86, 88 can be placed in carton-closing position, spaced apart from end flaps 82, 84 by flange portions 30a of members 20a, 20b. Upon rotating handle member 102 to a position substantially perpendicular with member 100, side flaps 86, 88 and end flaps 82, 84 are held in carton-closing position, side flaps 86, 88 being held between flanges 30a of members 20 and flange portion of handle member 102. By means of handle portion 122 of handle member 102, the carton 80 and its contents can be lifted and transported.
Referring specifically to FIGS. 8, 9 and 10, there is shown a third embodiment of this invention. This embodiment is especially adapted to cartons having end flaps and side flaps which substantially meet in edge-to-edge relationship. Parts of this third embodiment which are identical to parts of the first and second embodiments of this invention above-described are given like reference numerals. This third embodiment is comprised generally of a channel member 20c and a handle member 102.
Channel member 20c is identical in all respects to channel member 20 of the first embodiment of this invention, except that in addition to the structure of channel member 20, channel member 20c has a pair of tabs formed in flange portion 32b adjacent ends 26b, 28b, respectively. Tabs 130 may preferably be formed in flange 32b by means of two parallel cuts in flange 32b extending from its distal edge 33 inwardly toward web portion 34b. These cuts extend more than half the width of the flange 32b. Tabs 130 are bent so as to extend from web portion 32b in a direction opposite the extension of flange portion 32b and so that tabs 130 are parallel and contiguous to a portion of flange 32b which is located intermediate the combination of the cuts forming the tabs 130 and the web portion 34b. Tabs 130 provide a flange surface 131 which is located on the opposite side of web portion 3411 from the flange 32b but is parallel to flange 32b and flange 30b.
Members 102 and 200 are positioned adjacent each other in such a manner that openings 126 and 38b are in registry with each other. Inserted between members 102, 20b is a spacer 66 in a manner that passageway 68 is in registry with openings 126, 38b. Members 102, 20b are swivelly connected by means of a pivot rod 74 as above-described in this spaced-apart and substantially parallel position.
This third embodiment can be constructed of materials such as above-described in reference to parts of the first and second embodiments having similar reference numerals.
In operation, this third embodiment performs in much the same manner as the first and second embodiments. Member 200 is secured onto the edge of a flap 132 of carton 134 in the same manner as above described. Flap 136, which is the opposite flap to flap 132, is then placed in carton-closing position resting upon flange surface 131 of member 200, facing edges of flaps 132 and 136 in this position being spaced apart only by web portion 34b. Handle member 102 is then positioned so as to be substantially perpendicular to member 20c. In this position of handle member 102, the two remaining flaps 138, of carton 134 can then be placed in carton-closing positions. Upon rotating handle member 102 so as to be substantially parallel with member 200, the flaps 132, 136, 138 and 140 are held in carton-closing positions, In the carton-closing position of the aforementioned flaps, flange 30b lies between and separates flap 132 from adjacent portions of flaps 138, 140 and spacer 66 lies between the end surfaces of flaps 138, 140. By means of handle portion 122 of handle member 102, carton 134 and. its contents may be lifted and transported.
I claim as my invention:
1. A combination carton closing and carrying device comprising a pair of first channel members having a pair of parallel first flange portions, each of said first channel members having opposite open first ends and a first web portion interconnecting and spacing apart said first flange portions a first distance, one of said first flange portions of each pair having a first circular opening adjacent a medial position between said first ends and adjacent said first web portion, a pair of second channel members having a pair of parallel and spaced-apart second flange portions, each of said second channel members having opposite second ends and a second we'b portion interconnecting said second flange portions, each of said second flange portions having a second circular opening adjacent a medial position between said second ends and adjacent said second web portion, each of said second web portions having a third circular opening, said second openings being in registry with each other, respectively, said third opening being adjacent said medial position intermediate said second ends, said second web portions being wider than said first web portions, said first flange portions being wider than said second flange portions, a pair of spacers each having an interior passageway and a length equal to said first distance, each of said spacers being inserted between one of said first channel members and one of said second channel members, a pair of pivot rods being inserted through said first and second openings and said passageways, respectively, thereby pivotally connecting one of said first channel members to said one of said second channel members, and a handle member having opposite ends, adjacent end portions and an intermediate gripping portion, said handle ends being removably inserted into said third openings with said first and second web portions respectively facing each other in spacedapart and parallel position, whereby said first channel members are adapted to receive the facing edges of the end flaps of a carton between said first flanges and said first and second channel members are adapted to receive side flaps of said carton therebetween with said second channel members positioned parallel to said first channel members, said handle member resiliently holding said first and second channel members in spaced-apart position thereby holding said end and side flaps in their cartonclosing positions and providing a means by which said carton can be lifted and transported.
2. A combination carton closing and carrying device comprising a pair of first channel members having a pair of first flange portions, each of said first channel members having a first web portion interconnecting and spacing apart said first flange portions, a pair of second channel members having a pair of second flange portions, each of said second channel members having a second web portion interconnecting and spacing apart said second flange portions, a swivel pivotally connecting said first and second channel members respectively in spaced-apart and parallel relationship, a handle member having opposite ends, adjacent end portions and an intermediate gripping portion, said end portions being removably secured to said second channel members, respectively, with said second web portions facing each other in spaced-apart and parallel position, whereby said first channel members are adapted to receive the facing edges of the end flaps of a carton between said first flanges, and said first and second channel members are adapted to receive side flaps of such a carton therebetween said second channel members being positioned parallel to said first channel members, said handle member resiliently holding said first and second channel members in spaced-apart position thereby holding said end and side flaps in their carton-closing positions and providing a means by which said carton can be lifted and transported.
3. A combination carton closing and carrying device comprising first means formed wtih portions arranged to overlie and portions to underlie the facing edges of imperforate carton end flaps, said portions of said first means defining pockets disposed substantially in a common plane and opening oppositively away from each other to receive said facing flap edges respectively, second means having a handle portion, said second means and said first means being connected to each other with said second means wholly spaced from said common plane, said first means being receivable between the carton end flaps and between the carton end flaps and the carton side flaps, and said second means overlying the carton side flaps to confine said side flaps against movement away from said end flaps, thereby to hold the carton end flaps and side flaps in carton-closing positions and to provide means by which the carton can be lifted and transported.
4. The combination of claim 3 wherein said first and second means are pivotally connected.
5. The combination of claim 3 wherein said second means further comprises at least one handle supporting member pivotally connected to said first and second means.
6. A combination carton closing and carrying device comprising a pair of first members having a pair of parallel first flange portions, each of said first members having opposite open first ends and a first web portion interconnecting and spacing apart said first flange portions a first distance, one of said first members having a circular opening adjacent a medial position between said first ends and adjacent said first web portion, a second member having opposite second ends and a pair of second circular openings therein, one of said second openings being adjacent a medial position between said second ends, the other of said second openings being adjacent one of said second ends, and a third member having opposite third ends with a third circular opening therein and an integrally formed handle portion, said handle portion being disposed on both sides of a medial position between said third ends, said third opening being located at said medial position, a spacer having an interior passageway and a length at least double said first distance, said spacer being inserted between said second and third members in registry with said one of said second openings and said third opening, a pair of pivot rods, one of said pivot rods being inserted through said first opening and said other of said second openings, the other of said pivot rods being inserted through said third opening and said one of said second openings, thereby pivotally connecting said one of said first members and said third member to said second member, whereby said first members are adapted to receive the facing edges of the end flaps of a carton between said first flanges and said first and third members are adapted to receive the side flaps of a carton therebetween with said first and third members being positioned laterally to said second member thereby holding the carton flaps in carton-closing position and providing means by which the carton can be lifted and transported.
7. A combination carton closing and carrying device com rising a pair of first members having a pair of first flange portions, each of said first members having opposite first ends and a first web portion interconnecting and spacing apart said first flange portions a first distance, a second member having opposite second ends, and a third member having opposite third ends and an integrally formed handle portion therebetween, a pair of swivels, one of said swivels pivotally connecting one of said first members to said second member adjacent one of said second ends, the other of said swivels pivotally connecting said third member to said second member at medial positions between said third ends and said second ends, respectively, whereby said first members are adapted to receive the facing edges of the end flaps of a carton between said first flanges and said first and third members are adapted to receive side flaps of the carton therebetween with said first and third members positioned laterally to said second member thereby holding the carton flaps in carton-closing position and providing means by which the carton can be lifted and transported.
8. A combination carton closing and carrying device comprising a first member having parallel first flange portions, opposite first ends, and a first web portion interconnecting and spacing apart said first flange portions a first distance, one of said first flange portions etxending from said first web portion on both sides of said first web portion, the other of said first flange portions extending from said web portion on one side of said first web portion, said other of said first flange portions having a first circular opening at a medial position intermediate said first ends adjacent said first web portion, a second member having opposite second ends, an integrally formed handle portion therebetween, and a second opening at a medial position intermediate said second ends, a spacer having an interior passageway and a length approximately equal to said first distance, said spacer being inserted between said second member and said other of said first flange portions, said first and second openings and said passageway being in registry, and a pivot rod inserted through said first and second openings and said passageway, respectively, whereby said first member is adapted to receive the facing edges of the end flaps of a carton between said first flanges, said first and second members being adapted to receive side flaps of a carton therebetween, with said second member being positoned laterally to said first member thereby holding said carton fiaps in carton-closing position and providing means by which said carton can be lifted and transported.
9. A combination carton closing and carrying device comprising a first member having parallel first flange portions, opposite first ends, and a first web portion interconnecting and spacing apart said first flange portions, a second member having opposite ends and a handle portion therebetween, a swivel pivotally connecting said first and second members in spaced-apart and parallel relationship whereby said first member is adapted to receive the facing edges of the end flaps of a carton between said first flanges, and said first and second members receive the side flaps of a carton therebetween, with said second member being positioned laterally to said first member thereby holding the carton flaps in carton-closing position and providing means by which the carton can be lifted and transported.
10. A combination comprising a cart-on having four upstanding sides, a bottom, and imperforate side and end flaps, and a carton closing and carrying device comprising first means formed with portions arranged to overlie and portions to underlie the facing edges of the carton end flaps, said portions of said first means defining pockets disposed substantially in a common plane and opening oppositely away from each other to receive said facing flap edges respectively, second means having a handle portion, said second means and said first means being connected to each other with said second means wholly spaced from said comm-on plane, whereby said first means is receivable between said carton end flaps and said carton side flaps, and said second means overlies said carton side flaps to confine said side flaps against movement away from said end flaps, thereby to hold said carton end flaps and said side flaps in carton-closing positions and to provide means by which said carton can be lifted and transported.
11. The combination of claim 10 wherein said first and second means are pivotally connected.
12. The combination of claim 10 wherein said second means further comprises at least one handle supporting member pivotally connected to said first and second means.

Claims (1)

1. A COMBINATION CARTON CLOSING AND CARRYING DEVICE COMPRISING A PAIR OF FIRST CHANNEL MEMBERS HAVING A PAIR OF PARALLEL FIRST FLANGE PORTIONS, EACH OF SAID FIRST CHANNEL MEMBERS HAVING OPPOSITE OPEN FIRST ENDS AND A FIRST WEB PORTION INTERCONNECTING AND SPACING APART SAID FIRST FLANGE PORTIONS A FIRST DISTANCE, ONE OF SAID FIRST FLANGE PORTIONS OF EACH PAIR HAVING A FIRST CIRCULAR OPENING ADJACENT A MEDIAL POSITION BETWEEN SAID FIRST ENDS AND ADJACENT SAID FIRST WEB PORTION, A PAIR OF SECOND CHANNEL MEMBERS HAVING A PAIR OF PARALLEL AND SPACED-APART SECOND FLANGE PORTIONS, EACH OF SAID SECOND CHANNEL MEMBERS HAVING OPPOSITE SECOND ENDS AND A SECOND WEB PORTION INTERCONNECTING SAID SECOND FLANGE PORTIONS, EACH OF SAID SECOND FLANGE PORTIONS HAVING A SECOND CIRCULAR OPENING ADJACENT A MEDIAL POSITION BETWEEN SAID SECOND ENDS AND ADJACENT SAID SECOND WEB PORTION, EACH OF SAID SECOND WEB PORTIONS HAVING A THIRD CIRCULAR OPENING, SAID SECOND OPENINGS BEING IN REGISTRY WITH EACH OTHER, RESPECTIVELY, SAID THIRD OPENING BEING ADJACENT SAID MEDIAL POSITION INTERMEDIATE SAID SECOND ENDS, SAID SECOND WEB PORTIONS BEING WIDER THAN SAID FIRST WEB PORTIONS, SAID FIRST FLANGE PORTIONS BEING WIDER THAN SAID SECOND FLANGE PORTIONS, A PAIR OF SPACERS EACH HAVING AN INTERIOR PASSAGEWAY AND A LENGTH EQUAL TO SAID FIRST DISTANCE, EACH OF SAID SPACERS BEING INSERTED BETWEEN ONE OF SAID FIRST CHANNEL MEMBERS AND ONE OF SAID SECOND CHANNEL MEMBERS, A PAIR OF PIVOT RODS BEING INSERTED THROUGH SAID FIRST AND SECOND OPENINGS AND SAID PASSAGEWAYS, RESPECTIVELY, THEREBY PIVOTALY CONNECTING ONE OF SAID FIRST CHANNEL MEMBERS TO SAID ONE OF SAID SECOND CHANNEL MEMBERS, AND A HANDLE MEMBER HAVING OPPOSITE ENDS, ADJACENT END PORTIONS AND AN INTERMEDIATE GRIPPING PORTION, SAID HANDLE ENDS BEING REMOVABLY INSERTED INTO SAID THIRD OPENINGS WITH SAID FIRST AND SECOND WEB PORTIONS RESPECTIVELY FACING EACH OTHER IN SPACEDAPART AND PARALLEL POSITION, WHEREBY SAID FIRST CHANNEL MEMBERS ARE ADAPTED TO RECEIVE THE FACING EDGES OF THE END FLAPS OF A CARTON BETWEEN SAID FIRST FLANGES AND SAID FIRST AND SECOND CHANNEL MEMBERS ARE ADAPTED TO RECEIVE SIDE FLAPS OF SAID CARTON THEREBETWEEN WITH SAID SECOND CHANNEL MEMBERS POSITIONED PARALLEL TO SAID FIRST CHANNEL MEMBERS, SAID HANDLE MEMBER RESILIENTLY HOLDING SAID FIRST AND SECOND CHANNEL MEMBERS IN SPACED-APART POSITION THEREBY HOLDING SAID END AND SIDE FLAPS IN THEIR CARTONCLOSING POSITIONS AND PROVIDING A MEANS BY WHICH SAID CARTON CAN BE LIFTED AND TRANSPORTED.
