Description
iran STATES arm* onnion;
ISAAC. S. CLOUGH AND SAMUEL S. DAY,.OF BROOKLYN, NEXV YORK.
:BOOT` AND PANTALOON JACK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,181, dated April 30, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ISAAC S. CLoUGi-I, of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, and SAMUEL S. DAY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a new and Improved Combined Boot and Pantaloon Jack; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the Same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specilication, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1, is a front view of our combined boot and pantaloon jack; Fig. 2, a transverse cut section of the same.
Like parts of the invention are designated by similar letters of reference in the drawings.
The nature of the invention made and perfected by us, consists in the construction and operation of a combined boot and pantaloon jack, as hereinafter set forth and shown.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use our invention, we will speak of the construction and operation of the Same.
A shows a stationary platform to the back end of which is attached the stationary heel piece or rest B, while to its front end are attached the jaws C C, held in position by the cross-piece D and screws E E. These jaws C C are cast with Shanks or levers F F, which Shanks or levers are confined and partially operated by means of the india-rubber band G as shown.
H shows a swinging platform hinged at its extreme back end to the stationary platform A, by means of the hinge h, the stationary platform A being slotted as shown at a Fig. 2 to admit of the same. The back end of this swinging platform H is also beveled sufficiently so that when elevated, it bears .directly against the stationary heel piece or rest B and is thus held in position.
To the swinging platform H on its under side is attached the wedge I, for the purpose in combination with the india-rubber band G of operating the Shanks or levers F F of the jaws C C.
J shows a wire placed between the Shanks or levers F F and the stationary platform A, and K is a plate of metal upon which they rest and through which the screws E E pass.
L is a yoke or stirrup provided with vertical sides M M, turned outward, attached to the stationary platform A, about midway of its length, into which the swinging platform H sets.
C is a projecting piece on the yoke or stirrup L, upon which the hem of the pantaloon leg rests.
The platforms (A and H) and stationary heel piece or rest are made of wood, while the jaws, yoke or stirrup and wedge may be made of iron or any desired metal.
Operation: The combined boot and pantaloon jack being thus constructed, in order to operate the same and remove a boot from the foot of the wearer, that portion of the boot technically known as the counter, is placed within the jaws C C, while the heel of the boot upon the other foot of the wearer rests upon the stationary heel piece or rest B and the sole of the same upon the swinging platform H. The operator then depresses the Swinging platform H, causing the wedge I to enter between the Shanks or levers F F, opening the same and causing them to separate, by which action the jaws C C are caused to approach each other and firmly clamp and confine between them the counter. The boot being thus firmly retained and one foot of the wearer resting upon the swinging platform H, the foot of the party using the jack, may be readily withdrawn from the boot and upon lifting or removing the foot from the swinging platform H, the rubber band G, which by the separation of the Shanks or levers F F has been expanded,`
contracts, causing the Shanks or levers F F to approach each other, the jaws C C to be released from the counter of the boot and throwing the wedge I out of the position it occupied, thus causing the swinging platform H to be elevated and assume its original position. Vhendesired to remove the pantaloons, the bottom of the pantaloon leg is placed between the vertical side M of the yoke or stirrup L and the swinging platform H, the hem of the pantaloon leg resting upon the projectingV piece O. As the swinging platform H is depressed by the other foot of the operator the bottom of the same bears upon the hem and clamps the same between itself (H) and the projecting piece O, thus preventing the tearing of the pantaloons while being removed. The pantaloons being thus firmly held in position may be readily drawn off.
Our invention will be found particularly useful in the removal of boots andpantaloons when wet or muddy, rendering them disagreeable to handle, particularly for mi1ivided withlthe vertical jaws M M arranged 10 tary men. and operated substantially as described and Having thus fully described the invention for the purpose specified. We have made what We claim as new and I S CLOUGH 5 desire to have secured to us by Letters Pat- S' s' DAY ent is.
