STAND AND BASE 012 AN UMBRELLA Filed May 17, 1963 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 IN VEN TOR.
United States Patent 3,215,095 STAND AND BASE FOR AN UMBRELLA Frank J. Keppeler, Rte. 4, Box 303, Deononrowoc, Wis. Filed May 17, 1963, Ser. No. 281,354 2 Claims. (Cl. 108-50) This invention relates to an umbrella stand.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved umbrella stand which is portable and can be readily assembled from easily obtained parts.
Other objects and advantages will be pointed out in, or be apparent from the specification and claims, as will obvious modifications of the three embodiments shown in the drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a side elevation view of an umbrella and stand combination made in accordance with my invention;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view with parts broken away of the umbrella coupling means;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a side elevation view of a first modification of my invention;
FIG. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view with parts broken away of the coupling means of the FIG. 4 embodiment;
FIG. 6 is a side elevation view of a second modification of my invention; and
FIG. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the second embodiment shown in FIG. 6.
Referring to the drawings, the umbrella and umbrella stand combination of my invention is comprised of an umbrella 10 having a top 12 of conventional construction with a handle 14 adapted for engagement with a stand 16. The stand 16 is comprised entirely of conventional pipe fittings and pipe. The base of the stand is made from a /2 four-way cross 18 having /2" pipe nipples 20 threaded therein to form a base with /2" pipe elbows 22 threaded to the ends of nipples 20 to form the feet for the legs. A pipe flange 24 is securely fastened to the base by a pair of U-bolts 26 Which are fitted around the four-way cross with their ends projecting up through holes in the flang with suitable nuts 28 threaded therein to hold the parts securely together. The stand is completed by threading a pipe 30 into the middle of the flange to form the vertical support member onto which umbrella 10 is removably mounted. The umbrella can be quickly and easily mounted on the stand 16 by means of a A" X reducer 32 and a pipe nipple 34 threaded to the upper end of pipe 30 as shown in FIG. 2. A /8" hole 36 is drilled in the end of the umbrella handle 14 to receive the nipple 34 and thus provide the coupling between the umbrella and the stand.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that when it is desired to use the stand and umbrella at the beach for example, the stand can be partially disassembled for carrying and storage purposes and readily set up at the point of use. After the stand is set up as shown in FIG. 1, the umbrella can be readily mounted thereon by simply inserting the nipple 34 on the end of the stand into the drilled opening 36 in the end of the handle.
Two further embodiments of my invention are shown in FIGS. 4, 5, 6 and 7. The FIG. 4 embodiment is 3,215,095 Patented Nov. 2, 1965 substantially identical to that shown in FIG. 1 except that a table member 38 has been added. The table 38 is securely mounted on the stand by means of an additional flanged member 40 which is threaded onto the top of the pipe 30 as shown in FIG. 5. A short nipple 42 is then screwed into the top of the flange and a reducer 44 and connecting nipple 34 are threaded in place as shown.
The FIG. 6 embodiment utilizes an offset arrangement suitable for use with a pair of chairs as shown. The oifset is provided by the use of a T 46 threaded to the top of the pipe 30 and a horizontal pipe 48 threaded into the T with an L 50, a nipple 52, a reducer 54, and a nipple 34 threaded to the end for mounting the umbrella as shown in FIG. 7. A flange 56 is mounted in the upper end of the T 46 by means of a nipple 58 which serves as a means for mounting the table 60. As shown in FIG. 6, instead of the base construction shown in the previous embodiments, the stand can be securely mounted in the ground by providing a reducer 62 and a length of one inch pipe 64 which is driven into the ground.
Although several embodiments of the present invention have been illustrated and described, it will be apparent to those skilled inthe art that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or from the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An umbrella and umbrella stand combination comprising:
a stand having a base and a vertical support member mounted thereon, said base including a four-way cross having pipe nipples and elbows threaded therein and a pipe flange mounted thereon by means of a pair of U-bolts;
a coupling means for removably securing the umbrella to the stand, said coupling means including a male element mounted on the upper end of the said vertical support member and an opening in the end of the umbrella handle to receive said male element, said stand being further characterized by a length of pipe threaded into said pipe flange with a reducer and a nipple threaded to the upper end thereof to provide the male element for said coupling means.
2. An umbrella and umbrella stand according to claim 1 in which said stand includes a table member mounted on the end of said vertical support member beneath said coupling means, said table member being supported on said vertical support member by means of a pipe flange threaded to the end of said vertical support member.
