SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,386, dated Jul e 16, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, ISAAC NoAR, acitizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strips for the hlanufacture of N eck-IVear, &c.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a perspective view of a portion of a strip, showing the dif ferent strips which compose it separated at the end. Fig. .3 shows a back view. Fig. 3 is a cross section. I Fig. L is a front view showing several strips plaited together.

This invention has relation to the manufacture of neck-wear and other ornamental articles of apparel; and it consists in the novel formation of the fundamental strips with which said articles are manufactured, all as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter a indicates the foundation of the strip, which is made of paper or coarse fabric, and bis the covering-strip, of satin or other ornamental cloth, which is made wider than the basestrip a, so thatits edge portions can be folded around the edges of the base-stri p and secured to the back thereof.

0 is a strip of thin rubber carefully cut to fit the back of the base-strip and receive the edges of the covering-strip b. By pressing this base-strip and the rubber back strip and the covering-strip, having its edges folded over the rubber-covered back of the basestrip, between rollers or otherwise, the basestrip is united to the ornamental coveringstrip in a neat and secure manner, forming a substantial body-strip of fine appearance for plaiting or other arrangement in the face or exposed portion of article of ornamental wear. The pressing operation when satin is employed as the covering serves to improve its glossy appearance in amarked degree. The stiffness of the compound strip is of great importance in its use, as it is easily plaited, and its thickness gives a body which enhances the contrast of the strips in the work when of different colors, or when of the same color. The strips are very light, so that the increase of weight is not appreciable in the articles for the ornamentation of which it is designed.

I am aware that it is not new to form a hatband from a strip of woven fabric and a strip of guttapercha or india-rubber of equal size, the two being folded so as to envelope the plastic material and united by heat and pressure, and therefore do not claim such,'broadly.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A compound strip of material for the manufacture of articles of apparel, consisting of a base-strip of paper or coarse fabric, a back strip of thin rubber, and a covering-strip of ornamental fabric wider than the basestrip and having its edge-portions folded over the edges of the base-strip upon the rubber, the whole closely connected by pressure, substantially as specified.
