ROBERTSTEWART, OF PITTSFIELD, ILLINOIS.
STEAM-BOILER CLEANER.
l72CIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,862, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed December 23, 1884. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT STEWART, of Pittsfield, in the county of Pike and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful ,Improvements in Steam-Boiler Cleaners, and
larly to an improvement on Letters Patent No. 295,070, dated March 11, 1884, granted to me for an improvement in steam-boiler cleaners.
The object of my improvement is to provide improved means whereby the scales when detached from the interior of the boiler may become pulverized and ejected therefrom. A further object is to provide means of the above character which shall be simple and economical in construction and durable and efficient in use; and with these ends in view my invention consists in a conical-shaped tube with its discharge end smaller than its base.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of the boiler with a section broken away, showing the steam-discharge pipe and tubes; and Fig. 2 is a separate view' of 'one of the tubes.
A represents a steam-boiler of ordinary construction, provided at the bottom thereof with a pipe, B, located horizontally therein, the rear end of the pipe being closed with a suitable cap. The pipe B is provided at desired intervals with suitable perforations adapted to receive one end of the tubes C, which may be secured therein by means of screw-threads nr other desired means. The tubes Clare conical in shape, with the nozzle end thereof beveled from the outside or edge c, thus making the nozzle end smaller than the base c,which enters the pipe B. This manner of constructing the tube is found more desirable than those beveled in the opposite manner, as in practice it has been found that the tubes having the large inlet ends frequently admit matter into the mouth thereof Whiehis unable to pass through the tube, owing to the diminished size of its body. In the present construction any matter which enters the mouth of the tube will freely pass through the same into the pipe, owing to the enlargement of the tube from its mouth to its base.
On the outside of the pipe B and adjacent to the boiler is attached an escape-valve, D, of such character as will permit the said pipe to be instantly opened to its full capacity and at once closed again. When the arrangements are thus completed, the valve is quickly opened and closed, the rush of the Water in said boiler with the steam-pressure thereof through the said tubes, and then stopping this rush, will shock and vibrate the contents of the boiler, which, with the agitation of the Water under steam-pressure, will cause all scales or lsediment to break off the boiler and be carried against the beveled tubes and broken up or pulverized, and then to be drawn off through said tubes into said pipe, and so out of the boiler.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a steam-boiler, of a pipe situated near the bottom thereof and provided with short conical-shaped tubes, the
`nozzles of said tubes being smaller than the base thereof, and a valve, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with asteam-boiler, of a pipe situated near the bottom thereof and provided with short conical-shaped tubes, the nozzles of said tubes being beveled from the outside, and a valve, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with asteam-boiler, of
a pipe situated near the bottoni thereof and provided with tubes, the perforation in said tubes being conical-shaped on the inside, and the nozzle thereof being beveled on the outside, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presenceof two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT STEWART.
