(QR. 15-552) The present invention relates to a pressure dispenser, such as an aerosol can, particularly to a pressure dispenser of the type provided with an axially extending, elongated, tubular discharge nozzle at the base of which there is disposed, within a resilient body the outlet valve that may be opened by the tilting of the nozzle for the discharge of the can contents. More particularly, the present invention relates to an applicator attachment for the nozzle of such pressure dispenser.
Pressure dispensers of the character described, are frequently used to dispense material that requires processing after it is deposited on a surface. Such material may comprise, for example, a liquid adhesive that requires to be spread to a thin layer, over the surface to which it is applied, or it may comprise grout or calldng material that requires to be pressed into a groove or cavity that has to be filled. Heretoiore, in order to spread the liquid adhesive or to press in grout or calking material, a separate applicator or implement or device was required. Such implement could not be attached to the nozzle of the pressure dispenser can because the use of the implement required pressure against the surface being treated and when pressed against the surface, would tend to tilt the nozzle to open the valve of the dispenser and cause undesirable dispensing of its contents. The use of a separate, individual applicator for the purpose described, involves substantial inconvenience to the user and, frequently, waste of time that might be caused, especially by misplacernent of the applicator.
It is an object of the present invention to provide applicator attachment or accessory for the nozzle of a pressure dispenser can which will permit the dispensing of material from the can when desired and may be used as an applicator without risk of dispensing of material from the can when used as such.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide an applicator attachment accessory for a pressure dispenser can nozzle of the character described, which is easy and convenient to use and may be removed and transferred, as desired, from can to can.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an applicator or attachment or accessory for a pressure dispenser nozzle, of the character described, which is of relatively simple construction and economical to produce.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide applicator attachment or accessory for a pressure dipenser nozzle, of the character described, which is highly efiicient and reliable for its purposes.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the accessory attachment to pressure dispenser of the present invention will become more readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawings and in the description following. It is to be understood, however, that such embodiment is shown by way of illustration only, and without any intent of limiting the invention to the specific details therein shown.

Referring now in greater detail to the embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1% designates a pressure dispensing can of a conventional type, having an opening, 312, defined by an outwardly curved beaded edge, 14, and an inwardly directed cup-shaped closure, 16, set into the opening 12 and formed with a curved lip, 18, fitting over the beaded edge 14, of the can opening. The closure 16 is provided with a center opening over which is set a resilient cylindrical stud, 19, which houses an outlet valve (not shown) and above which is mounted an elongated tubular nozzle, 20, having a flared base forming a shoulder, 22, that rests on the resilient stud, l9, and slightly overlaps it to form the undercut shoulder 23. This conventional pressure can may be used to discharge its contents through the nozzle 2!? by tilting the latter in any direction, which results in the opening of the valve, as is well known in the art.
The applicator attachment of the present invention mayv consist of a tubular portion, 26, adapted to fit snugly over the inner end of the nozzle 2d and a flared base portion 28, adapted to fit over the shoulder 22 of the nozzle. The base portion 23 may be formed with an inner rib, 259, at the bottom of its flare, which is adopted to snap over and engage under the shoulder 23 of the nozzle base 22 to retain the applicator section 24 in place. The base portion 28 is also formed with a lateral extension on foot, 3? of a length to overlie the curved lip ll?) of the closure 16 and in position to contact it when the flared base portion 23 of the attachment section 24 is engaged on the shoulder 22. T he foot 3d may be provided with dependent prongs a length to overlie thec urved lip 18 of the closure 16 and may frictionally contact its inner surface.
The applicator also comprises a second section generally designated as 36, consisting of a tubular portion, 38, adapted to frictionally engage over the end portion of the nozzle 20 and having its end cut away along converging oppositely facing planes to provide a tapered end portion, 48, to the edges or which are secured a pair of converging plates, 42 and 44, which close oii the end of the tubular portion 33. Sue of the plates, as 42, is formed with a discharge opening, 46, that communicates with the outlet of the nozzle 26. The other of the plates, 44, may have its outer surface shaped to perform the processing of the dispensed material, as a flat surface shaped to act as spreader and to wipe off excess material, as illustrated. Where the discharged material is of a nature that requires spreading, as glue, the plate 42 may be formed with low squared ribs, d7, along its side edges, to spread the discharged glue in a layer of applicable thickness.
While the attachment of the invention may have its two sections 2.4 and 36 integrally formed, with the foot 39 extending from the sleeve. section 26 on the same side with the apertured plate d2, it is preferred to have the two sections of the attachment 24. and 36, separate from one another so as to enable the use or" its first section 24 with second section 36 of different forms or shapes. When so formed in two separate sections, and to the end that the foot 39 will always be in properly oriented relation relative to the discharge opening, 46, the inner end of the tube portion 33 of the second section may be provided with notches or recesses, 48, and the outer end of the tubular portion 25 of the first section 24, may be provided with projections, 54 fitting into the recess 43; the recesses and projections being so arranged as to orient the two sections of the attachment in proper relation to one another, to have foot 3% and opening 46 face in the same direction.
The operation of the attachment of the present invention will be clear from the foregoing. In preparation for use, the first section 24 is fitted over the inner end of the nozzle 29 and snapped over the edge of its base 28, with the end of'the foot 30 overlying the edge 13 of the closure 16 and in contact therewith and its teeth or prongs 32 extending into the interior of the closure. The second section 36 of the attachment is then slipped over the end of the nozzle 20, with the projections 50 and recesses 48 interfitted so that proper orientation of the discharge opening 46 and foot 30 is arranged. The friction fit of the tubular portion 26 of section 24 over the nozzle will maintain it securely in place on the nozzle.
In order to discharge the contents of the dispenser, the applicator end of the attachment is applied against the surface, 54, to be coated, with the plate 42 having the opening 46 facing such surface. Pressure of the applicator against the surface 54 will cause the nozzle 20 to tilt and open the discharge valve of the can without any interference from the foot 30, which will be tilted away from the edge of the closure as clearly seen in FIG. 2. The discharge material will pass into the tapered space between the two plates 42 and 4-4 and through the opening 46 on to the surface 54. The discharged material will be spread into a layer of applicable thickness, by the movement of plate 42 over the surface. The can is then rotated in the hand, 180, so that the surface of the other plate 44, and its pressure against the treated surface 54 will not cause any tilting of the nozzle 20 to discharge position; such movement being inhibited by the contact of the foot with the edge 18 of the closure 16. When the base 22 of the nozzle 20 is in such elevated position that the foot St! is disposed in spaced relation above the lip 1% of the closure 1d, as may happen under the pressure of a full can, which may press outwardly and elevate the stub 19 and nozzle 20, the movement of the nozzle to discharge position will be inhibited by the contact of the prongs 32 against the inner surface of the wall of the closure 16.
This completes the description of the applicator attachment of the present invention. It will be clear that such attachment may have applicator portions of varied shapes for varied purposes. It will also be apparent that the attachment of the present invention is simple, easy and safe to use and is highly efiicient for its purposes and affords great convenience to the user.
It will be further apparent that numerous variations and modifications may be made in the'applicator attachment of the present invention, by any one skilled in the art, in accordance with the principles of the invention hereinabove set forth and without the exercise of any inventive ingenuity. I desire, therefore, to be protected for any and all such variations and modifications that may be made within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the claims hereto appended.
What I claim is:
1.. An applicator attachment for a pressure dispensing can, said can having an opening, a cup-shaped closure set within said opening, said closure having a curved lip overlying the edge of said opening, a resilient stud supported on the bottom of said closure, said stud including a normally closed outlet valve communicating with interior of said can, and a nozzle mounted on said'stud and tiltable to open said vlave, said attachment including an inner section comprising a sleeve portion adapted to fit over the inner end of said nozzle, said sleeve portion having a laterally extending foot adapted to overlie and 4 engage against said lip when said sleeve is placed over said nozzle and an outer section comprisirn a sleeve portion adapted to frictionally engage the outer end portion of said nozzle and to project thereabove, said projecting portion of said last named sleeve portion closed at its projecting end and having outlet means to the side thereof facing said foot and an applicator surface on the side opposite to said foot.

The applicator attachment of claim 1, wherein said outer section is formed with a sloping surafce on the end of its projecting sleeve portion, said sloping surface facing said foot, said outlet meansformed in said sloping surface, and wherein said applicator is disposed in a plane oppositely sloping to and intersecting said sloping surface.
3. The applicator attachment of claim 1, wherein means are provided on said sleeve portion of said inner section adapted to engage over the inner end of said nozzle, to retain said inner section on said nozzle.

The applicator attachment of claim 1, wherein said nozzle is formed with an annular, projecting edge portion at its inner end and the sleeve portion of said inner section is formed with internal annularly aranged projection means adapted to engage under the said projecting edge of the inner end of said nozzle, to retain said inner section on said nozzle.
5'. The applicator attachment of claim 1, wherein said sections are separate from one another and cooperating means are provided on said sections for maintaining them in oriented position with said opening in said second section facing the side of the foot of said first section.
6. The applicator attachment of claim 1, wherein said foot is provided with projection means aranged to fit within said closure against the side wall thereof.

The applicator attachment of claim 1, wherein said projecting portion of said sleeve of said outer section is tapered and is defined by oppositely sloping, intersecting planes, one of said planes facing in the direction of said foot, and a plate is secured to each of said tapering sides of said projecting sleeve portion, said plates closing said sleeve end; the plate secured to said tapered side lying in said one plane having said outlet means provided there- 8. An applicator attachment for a pressure can, said can including a body having an opening, a normally closed outlet valve set into said opening, an outlet nozzle mounted over said valve, said valve operable for opening by the tilting of said nozzle, said applicator attachment including an inner section adapted to fit over the base of said nozzle, said section having a lateral extension normally engaged against a portion of said body to inhibit tilting of said nozzle in the direction of said extension, and a second section, including a closed-end tubular portion fitted over the end of said nozzle, said tubular portion including an opening formed therein on the side thereof facing said extension and a surface for Working the material dispensed through said opening provided on the side thereof opposite the said opening.
9. The applicator attachment of claim 8, wherein said ections are separate from one another and cooperating means are provided on said sections for maintaining them in oriented position with said opening in said tubular portion facing the side of the foot of said first section.

AN APPLICATOR ATTACHMENT FOR A PRESSURE CAN, SAID CAN INCLUDING A BODY HAVING AN OPENING, A NORMALLY CLOSED OUTLET VALUVE SET INTO SAID OPENING, AN OUTLET NOZZLE MOUNTED OVER SAID VALVE, SAID VALVE OPERABLE FOR OPENING BY THE TILTING OF SAID NOZZLE, SAID APPLICATOR ATTACHMENT INCLUDING AN INNER SECTION ADAPTED TO FIT OVER THE BASE OF SAID NOZZLE, SAID SECTION HAVING A LATERAL EXTENSION NORMALLY ENGAGED AGAINST A PORTION OF SAID BODY TO INHIBIT TILTING OF SAID NOZZLE IN THE DIRECTION OF SAID EXTENSION, AND A SECOND SECTION, INCLUDING A CLOSED-END TUBULAR PORTION FITTED OVER THE END OF SAID NOZZLE, SAID TUBULAR PORTION INCLUDING AN OPENING FORMED THEREIN ON THE SIDE THEREOF FACING SAID EXTENSION AND A SURFACE FOR WORKING THE MATERIAL DISPENSED THROUGH SAID OPENING PROVIDED ON THE SIDE THEREOF OPPOSITE THE SAID OPENING.
