11 Claims. (Cl. 222-1) The present invention relates to an arrangement concerning cartons or boxes containing powdered material. The invention has for its object to provide such packages with a dispensing arrangement in the form of a dispensing measure arranged in connection with the package, which is provided at the opening of the package, which in a way known per se is provided with a corneror toppart which by perforations or weakening lines can be severed along three edges while the fourth edge serves as a hinge connection between the thus provided cap and the carton itself.
The cap thus obtained by the known cartons is however badly suited as a dispensing measure. The necessary tipping of the cap after this has been filled by the flowing of powder through the opening provided in the carton will be diflicult. The hinge connection permits only 180 turning, which is not sufiicient. To prevent the powder from flowing out of the carton this will have to be held in an oblique position with the opening upward, and 180 turning of the cap will then not be sufiicient to have the cap emptied. To make possible an effective emptying of said dispensing cap it is proposed according to the invention that the side panel of the cap adjacent the hinge edge be provided with one or more crease lines or the like which may serve as bending indication, and that further the edge of the cap extending between the hinge edge and the crease line is provided with perforations or other weakening means.
The invention also relates to an arrangement by means there are disclosed two embodiments thereof which are shown in the drawing, wherein:
FIG. 1 shows a carton intended for opening in one corner, thereby to provide a tetrahedral dispensing cap. FIG. 2 shows a carton intended for being opened at A the top so that the upper part will form a parallelepiped cap.
FIGS. 3 and 4 show the arrangement according to FIG. 1 during dispensing.
FIGS. 5 and 6 show the arrangement according to FIG. 2 during dispensing.
The arrangement of the carton according to FIG. 1 for the provision of a dispensing cap 2 having a tetrahedral form comprises perforations or weakening lines 3 extending along three of the edges of the cap. The crease line 9 serves as a hinge. Above the hinge line 9 there is arranged a further crease line 8 also serving as a hinge. The edge part 12 joining said two lines 8 and 9 is perforated or weakened.
When the carton 1 is opened, the cap 2 is severed from the remainder of the carton along the perforations 3 and is swung aside along the crease line 9. The cap 2 then may be filled with the contents of the carton as shown in FIG. 3, whereby the contents flow through the opening 7 and down into the interior 6 of the cap.
The carton 1 is then tilted upwardly to an oblique position with the opening 7 facing upwardly as shown in FIG. 4. The cap 2 is then swung down, the edge part 12 thereby being separated along the edge part 12, whereafter 3,186,595 Patented June 1, 1965 further swinging-down movement is thereby made possible along the other hinge line 8.
In the arrangement according to FIG. 2, there are provided lines of perforations 5 and 6 at the upper part of the carton 11 around three of the side panels. The fourth side panel is provided with two crease lines 10 and 11 constituting hinge lines. The connection edges 16, 16 between crease lines 10 and 11 are perforated or weakened. When the side panels are severed along lines of perforations 5, the upper part of the carton 1 can be swung around hinge line 11 to thereby provide a dispensing cap 4.
FIG. 5 shows how the cap 4 is filled from the carton 1' after beingswung down about the crease line 11.
FIG. 6 shows how the cap 4 is emptied after being swung down from the position shown in FIG. 5 about the crease line 10. This is obtained by separating the cap along edge parts 16 whereafter the carton 1' is tilted upwardly to an oblique position to prevent the material in the package from being discharged therefrom, after which the cap 4 is tilted downwardly about hinge line 10 to dispense the contents in the cap 4.
To strengthen the carton during production or'storing and transport, the weakening lines may be covered for example, with a strip of thin material glued to the package and easily removed.
What is claimed is:
1. A carton adapted for dispensing measured quantities of material which is contained within the carton, saidd carton comprising a pair of side walls, a pair of end walls and top and bottom walls, three connected lines of perforations in said walls defining a cap' when the lines of perforations are severed, a fold line in one of the walls having ends joined to the connected lines of perforations to constitute a hinge line for the cap whereby said cap can be pivotally moved with respect to the remainder of said carton, a second fold line in said one wall and within said cap and constituting a further hinge line for said cap and a further line of perforations joining said fold lines to permit said cap to be pivotally moved about the further hinge line which is defined by said second fold line when the further line of perforations has been severed whereby the combined pivotal movement of said cap about the two fold lines may exceed 2. A carton as claimed in claim 1 wherein said carton is parallelipiped in shape, and the lines of perforations define a tetrahedral cap.
3. A carton as claimed in claim 1 wherein said carton is parallelepiped in shape, and the lines of perforations define a rectangular cap.
4. A carton as claimed in claim 2 wherein said fold lines have a common intersection at a location remote from said further line of perforations.

A carton as claimed in claim 2 wherein the three lines of perforations include a first line of perforations in the top wall extending parallel to'the line of intersection between the top wall and an end wall, a second line of perforations in an end wall extending parallel to the line of intersection between the end wall and the top wall and a third line of perforations extending in a side wall and joined to the first and second line of perforations, the first of said fold lines extending in the other of the side walls between the first and second line of perforations.

A carton as claimed in claim 5 wherein said second fold line is in said other side wall and intersects the first fold line at the point where the latter is joined to the line of perforation in the top wall, the second fold line extending from said point of intersection with the first fold line along a line between the top wall and said first fold line.
7. A carton as claimed in claim 3 wherein said lines of perforations and'the first fold line lie in a common 8. A carton adapted for dispensing measured quantities of material therefrom, said carton comprising a plurality t of walls, means defining lines of weakness in said walls to provide a cap when the carton is severed along said lines, a fold line alongwhich the cap is hingeably supported to the remainder of the carton; means defining a hinge line in said cap separate from said fold line to enable a portion of the cap to undergo further pivotal movement with respect to the remainder of said carton about said hinge line and means defining a line of weakness joining the hinge line and the fold line which must be severed before the cap can undergo the further pivotal movement, said fold line and hinge line being cooperatively arranged in said carton to provide pivotal capability the carton by tilting the latter downwardly to cause the contents to be discharged into the cup-shaped portion through said opening, tilting the carton upwardly after the cup-shaped portion has been filled to prevent outflow of any further material through said opening, and pivoting the cup-shaped portion downwardly about a'hinge axis in the cup-shaped portion whichris distinct from the hingeable connection between the cup-shaped portion and the remainder of the cartonj to discharge the quantity of contents in-the cup-shaped portion,

  1. 9. A CARTON ADAPTED FOR DISPENSING MEASURED QUANTITIES OF MATERIAL THEREFROM, SAID CARTON COMPRISING A PLURALITY OF WALLS, MEANS DEFINING LINES OF WEAKNESS IN SAID WALLS TO PROVIDE A CAP WHEN THE CARTON IS SEVERED ALONG SAID LINES, A FOLD LINE ALONG WHICH THE CAP IS HINGEABLY SUPPORTED TO THE REMAINDER OF THE CARTON, MEANS DEFINING A HINGE LINE IN SAID CAP SEPARATE FROM SAID FOLD LINE TO ENABLE A PORTION OF THE CAP TO UNDERGO FURTHER PIVOTAL MOVEMENT WITH RESPECT TO THE REMAINDER OF SAID CARTON ABOUT SAID HINGE LINE, AND MEANS DEFINING A LINE OF WEAKNESS JOINING THE HINGE LINE AND THE FOLD LINE WHICH MUST BE SEVERED BEFORE THE CAP CAN UNDERGO THE FURTHER PIVOTAL MOVEMENT, SAID FOLD LINE AND HINGE LINE BEING COOPERATIVELY ARRANGED IN SAID CARTON TO PROVIDE PIVOTAL CAPABILITY OF SAID PORTION OF THE CAP THROUGH AN ANGLE EXCEEDING 180*.
