UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE K. JONES, OF HARTFORD, ASSIGNOR TO THE RUSSELL 81 ERWIN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
WIRE-NAIL STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,565, dated May 26, 1885.
Application filed February 24, 1885. (No specimens) To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE K. J ONES, of the city and county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and 5 useful Improvement in Wire for Making Drive-Nails, which improvement is fully set forth and described in the following specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a section of my improved nail-wire, and Fig. 2 shows a nail made from said wire.
This invention relates to a new form of drive-nail stock, which is first suitably formed 15 in continuous lengths and subsequently cut into sections, each of said sections constituting a blank from which a perfect nail may be formed.
My purpose is to produce in a compara- 20 tively cheap way nails which, having been driven into wood, have unusual holding-power, and which cannot be withdrawn without applying great force and with a tendency to deface or destroy the wood. Said nail-stock 2 5 may be described as a series of barbs formed concentrically on a continuous wire and inte- I gral therewith, or as a series of frustum of cones, the base of each cone being joined integrally to the apex of the one next adjoining. As will be. seen in Fig. 2, the base of each cone 0 is toward the head of the finished nail, and is substantially at right angles to the line of wire. The opposite side of said cone or barb is beveled, ending, preferably, at the point where it engages the base of the next cone. 3 5
Said nail-stock may be produced by turn ing, (using ordinary annealed wire for the blank,) or may be swaged or rolled, as preferred.
Having thus described my invention, I +0 clairn- The within-described nail-stock, consisting of a continuous metallic rod or wire having its periphery throughout its entire length formed with barbs arranged concentric with 5 said rod or wire, the upper face of each of said barbs being approximately at right angles to the line of wire, all for the object specified.
HORACE K. JONES. Vitnesses:
