In many sinks a device is provided at the end of a flexible tubing through which either clear water or water mixed with a 4liquid detergent may be diverted to facilitate dishwashing. One of the problems involved in such structure is to provide satsifactory valving.
It is ancbject of this invention to provide such a device which is relatively reistant to initial opening but which once this original resistance is overcome, is rel- -atively easy to open further and hold open.
Still a `further object of this invention is to provide novel means for introducing detergent into the water stream flowing therethrough.

This invention is `an improvement to the device described and claimed in prior United States Patent No. 2,795,460.
The device in general comprises a hollow shell or body lll having a water inlet at one end 12. :and an outlet at the opposite end ld. A lever 16 actuates the water control valve 18 to open or close off flow of water and a push but-ton 2l) actuates the detergent control valve 22 to admit detergent to water flowing through the structure. At the inlet end l2 an internally threaded hos-e connector 24 is provided into which a male hose connector (not shown) on a water supply tube may be screwed. A sleeve 26 has one end thereof crimped as at 28 to secure same to connector 24. The lwater control valve 18 which will be described in detail is housed within sleeve 26. Said sleeve has a tube 3d projecting through an opening 32 therethrough which tube is beaded as at 34 to prevent passage of same through opening 32.
The tube 30 is telescopically received within the reservoir sealing member 3d which has -a tubular extension 3S projecting therefrom for this purpose. Telescopically received likewise within said extension 38 is a tube 4t) having an externally threaded nipple 42 at the end thereof with a pair of projections 44 which abut against brush holder 46.
The brush .holder has an outwardly turned flange which overlies shoulder 43 on brush base Sil in which bristles 52 are secured. A nozzle 54 having a central aperture 56 screws onto nipple 42. A rubber spray .forming nozzle 58 lits over nozzle 54 having a series of line holes 6th therein ilow through which creates a Spray.
Thus water iiow is from connector 2d through valve 18 into tubing 3l), tubular extension 38, tubing 40, nipple 42, aperture S6 in nozzle 54 and holes oil in nozzle 53.
Turning now to water control valve 18, a valve hous-` ing 612 has a hollow tubular extension 64 which projects through washer `66, resilient washer 63 and bore 7d into connector 24. A spring 72 surrounds the extension 64 and abuis washer 66 and housing 6?..
Positioned within housing 62 is a resilient valve member 74 which normally abuts the extremity of tubing 3l) and blocks off water flow therethrough. The valve member is mounted in housing 62 by a spider 76 the legs of which abut internal shoulder 7 S of the housing.
A cup shaped valve retainer tlslidably lits on tubing 39 and abuts spider 76. A resilient washer 82 is positioned between retainer Sil and rigid washer 84 which in turn abuts inturned llange 86 on housing `62 securing the valve member 74 in the housing.
Lever 16 at its foremost extremity has a slot 8S which receives projection 90 on liner retainer 9,2. The lever ,also has a pair of yhooks 94 which engage -inturned ilanges 96 on sleeve 26 which sleeveihas the lower forwardmost portion thereof cut away as .at 93 to receive the pivoting lever.
Extending between hooks 94 is a toggle 169. The toggle has an upwardly faced U-shaped section 1492, which receives tube 30, and a pair of downwardly turned legs 104 terminating in outwardly projectingjends 106 which project through holes 108 in hooks 94.
As seen in FIGURES 2 and 3 when the trigger or lever 16 is released, spring 72 urges control valve 1-8 tothe right against toggle Idil untilivalve member 74 abuts .the end of tube 3d. When the handle or body lll is grasped and lever 16 depressed the spring 72 resists movement of valve 18 which `spring can be of sufficient. resistance to avoid accidental or too rapid opening resulting in an unwanted spray of water.
After the initial reluctance of the spring is overcome and as toggle llli is further pivoted counter-clockwise in FIGURES 2 and 3 by further depression of lever I6 the mechanical advantage increases so that further opening of the valve requires less force.
When the valve 18 has traveled to its fully open position as seen in FIGURE 4, the .toggle lo@ and specifically legs 162 have `assumed almost a straight line relationship with spring 72 reducing the force necessary to apply to lever lo to hold the valve fully open. When the lever annex/ie 16 is released, spring 72 pivots same to the initial or open position with valve member 7d again abutting tube 3).
In this embodiment, liquid detergent is stored in a reservoir between body lll) and tube d@ and same is designated lid. This reservoir is closed at one end by nozzle 54, brush holder 46 and packing i12 in conjunction with nipple 42 and at the other end by sealing member 36. The member 36 is formed of -a circular flange lll@ having a series of parts llt? punched therethrough to which tia/nge extension 35i heretofore describe-d is connected. An opposed similar circular flange lid is provided having a tubular extension l2@ thereon'which extension surrounds Ytubing 30 and is spaced therefrom, A resilient liner 122 is provided within extension 12d which surrounds same. The outermost portion of extension 12d is necked inwardly to clamp one extremity of liner to tubing 30. The remaining `end of liner 122 projects between ilanges 114 and 118 and is beaded to form a seal for the reservoir. Tube 3l) and extension 120 each has a hole 12d and 126 therein which latter hole contains a ball 127. A leaf spring member 123 has a central bore through which tube 30 passes and an upper arm i3d which bears against the upper surface of extension l2@ and a lower arm 132 which bears against ball 123 urging same to push a portion of liner T122 into hole 124 lto prevent flow of detergent into tube 30. Button 2li has a pair of legs such as i314 depending therefrom which straddle tube Btl and extension 12h and is notched as at 136 to fit into complementary notches in arm 132. When the button Ztl is depressed the arm E32 is likewise depressed through legs i3d .releasing the spring pressure on ball 127 which then permits the liquid detergent to be drawn from the reselvoir into theV stream of water llowing through tube 3@ until button 2l) is released and ball 127 is again seated in hole 124.
It is to be noted that the lever lo and button are positioned on opposite sides of body lll and in sufticient proximity to permit them to be operated by one hand of the user.
While what hereinbefore has been described is the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is readily apparent that alterations and modilications can be resorted to without departing rJfrom the scope of this invention.
We claim:
1. In a detergent disperser ot the type connected to a water supply by a llexible hose and a hollow body having an inlet connectible to said hose at one extremity and an outlet at the other extremity, the combination therewith of a tubing within said body, valve means insaid body controlling ow through said tubing, a seal in said body forming a detergent reservoir therein, a hole in said tube, a resilient liner surrounding said tube and spaced therefrom, a ball, means urging said ball into said liner and said liner into said hole shutting oft tlow Vfrom said reservoir to said tube whereby dow through said tube draws detergent lfrom said reservoir when said liner is not in said hole.

3. ln a detergent disperser of the type. connected to a water supply by a ilexible hose and a hollow body having an inlet connectible to said hose at one extremity and an outlet at the other extremity, lthe combination therewith of a tubing within said body extending ffrom adjacent said outlet to a position short of said inlet, valve means movable longitudinally in said body to abut the end of said tubing nearest said inlet, spring means urging said valve into the tube abutting position, lever means, a toggle connection between said lever connection and said valve means whereby movement of said lever moves said toggle to move said valve means out of abutment with said tube against said spring means, a seal in said body forming a detergent reservoir therein, a hole in said tube, a resilient liner surrounding said tube and spaced therefrom, a ball, means urging said ball into said liner and said liner into said hole shutting off llow from said reservoir to said tube whereby ilow through said tube draws detergent from said reservoir when said liner is not in said hole.

In a detergent disperser of the type connected to a water supply by a llexible hose and a hollow body having an inlet connectible to said hose at one extremity and an outlet at the other extremity, the combination therewith of a tubing within said body extending from adjacent said outlet to a position short of said inlet, valve means movable longtiudinally in said body to abut the end of said tubing nearest said inlet, spring means urging said valve into the tube abutting position, lever means, a toggle connection between said lever connection and said valve means whereby `movement of said lever moves said toggle to lmove said valve means out of abutment with said tube against said spring means, a seal in said body forming a detergent reservoir therein, a hole in said tube, a resilient liner surrounding said tube and spaced therev from, a ball, means urging said ball into said liner and said liner into said hole shutting ot ilow from said reservoir to said tube, said last mentioned means including a spring urging said ball, a push button external of said body and connected to said last mentioned spring to release said ball when the button is depressed whereby flow through said tube and said valve means draws detergent through said hole when said ball is released.
5. ln a detergent disperser of the type connected to a water supply by a flexible hose and a hollow body hav-V ing an inlet connectible to said yhose at one extremity and an outlet at the other extremity, the combination therewith of a tubing within said body extending from adjacent said outlet to a position short oi` `said inlet, valve means movable longitudinally in said body to abut the end of said tubing nearest said inlet, spring means urging said valve into the tube abutting position, lever means, a toggle connection between said lever connection and said valve means whereby movement of said lever moves said toggle to move said valve means out of abutment with said tube against spring means, said toggle means be formed to increase the mechanical advantage as said lever is moved, a seal in said body forming a detergent reservoir therein, a hole in said tube, a resilient liner surrounding said tube and spaced therefrom, a ball, means urging said ball into said liner and saidliner into said hole shutting oit ilow `from said reservoir to said tube whereby flow through said tube draws ldetergent from said reservoir when said liner is not in said hole.

In a detergent disperser of the type connected to a water supply by a ilexible hose and a hollow body having an inlet fconnectible to said hose at one extremity and an outlet attthe other extremity, the combination therewith of a tubing within said body extendingrfrom adjacent said outlet to a position short of said inlet, valve means movable longitudinally in said body to abut the end of said tubing nearest said inlet, spring means urging said valve into the tube abutting position, lever means, a toggle connection between said lever connection and said valve means whereby movement of said lever moves said toggle to move said valve means out of abutment with said tube against spring means, said toggle means be formed to increase the mechanical advantage as said lever is moved, a seal in said body/forming a detergent reservoir therein, a hole in said tube, a resilient liner surrounding said tube and spaced therefrom, a ball, means urging said ball into said liner .and said liner into said hole shutting oit flow from said reservoir to said tube', said last mentioned means including a spring urging said ball, a push button external of said body and connected to said last mentioned spring to release said ball when the button is depressed whereby tlow through said tube and said valve means draws detergent through said hole when said ball is released.

In a detergent disperser of the type connected to -a water supply by a tlexible hose and a hollow body having an inlet connectible to said hose at one extremity and an outlet at the other extremity, the combination therewith of a tubing within said body extending from adjacent said outlet to a position short of said inlet, a resilient valve member adapted to abut the extremity of said tube adjacent said inlet, a valve member carrier in communication with said inlet, spring means surrounding said carrier and seated against an obstruction in said body urging said carrier and hence said valve member into position wherein the -latter shuts oft" low through said carrier to said tube, a lever pivotally mounted within said body, a toggle pivotally connected to said lever bearing against said carrier and moving said carrier against the urging of said spring upon depression of said lever.
8. ln a detergent disperser of the type connected to a water supply by a exible hose and `a hollow body having an inlet connectible to said hose at one extremity and an outlet at the other extremity, the combination therewith of a tubing within said body extending from adjacent said outlet to a position short of said inlet, a resilient valve member adapted to abut the extremity of said tube adjacent said inlet, a valve member carrier in communication with said inlet, spring means surrounding said carrier `and seated against an obstruction in said body urging said carrier and hence said valve member into position wherein the latter shuts olf ow through said carrier to said tube, a lever pivotally mounted within said body, a toggle pivotally connected to said lever bearing against said carrier and moving said carrier against the urging of said spring upon depression of said lever, said toggle having a U-shaped portion bearing against said tube and a pair of downwardly turned legs connected to said lever.
9. ln a detergent disperser of the type connected to a water supply by a llexible hose and a hollow body having an inlet connectible to said hose at one extremity and an outlet at the other extremity, the combination therewith of a tubing within said body extending from adjacent said outlet to a position short of said inlet, a resilient valve member adapted to abut the extremity of said tube adjacent said inlet, a valve member carrier in communication with said inlet, spring means surrounding said carrier and seated against an obstruction in said body urging said carrier and hence said valve member into position wherein the latter shuts oit llow through said carrier to said tube, a lever pivotally mounted within said body, a toggle pivotally connected to said lever bearing against said carrier and moving said carrier against the urging of said spring upon depression of said lever, a seal in said body forming a detergent reservoir therein, a hole in said tube, a resilient liner surrounding said tube and spaced therefrom, a ball, means urging said ball into said liner and said liner into said hole shutting ott ilow from said reservoir to said tube whereby ow through said tube draws detergent from said reservoir when said liner is not in said hole.

Claims (1)

1. IN A DETERGENT DISPERSER OF THETYPE CONNECTED TO A WATER SUPPLY BY A FLEXIBLE HOSE AND A HOLLOW BODY HAVING AN INLET CONNECTIBLE TO SAID HOSE AT ONE EXTREMITY AND AN OUTLET AT THE OTHER EXTREMITY, THE COMBINATION THEREWITH OF A TUBING WITHIN SAID BODY, VALVE MEANS IN SAID BODY CONTROLLING FLOW THROUGH SAID TUBING, A SEAL IN SAID BODY FORMING A DETERGENT RESERGOIR THEREIN, A HOLE IN SAID TUBE, A RESILIENT LINER SURROUNDING SAID TUBE AND SPACED THEREFROM, A BALL, MEANS URGING SAID BALL INTO SAID LINER AND SAID LINER INTO SAID HOLE SHUTTING OFF FLOW FROM SAID RESERVOIR TO SAID TUBE WHEREBY FLOW THROUGH SAID TUBE DRAWS DETERGENT FROM SAID RESERVOIR WHEN SAID LINER IS NOT IN SAID HOLE.
