DENNIS LANE, oE' froNTPELIEE, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR r THE LANE MANU- FAGTURING ooMPAN OF SAME PLACE.
SAW-MILL SET-WORKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,378, dated May 5. 1335- Application filed February .37, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DENNIs LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montpelier, in the county of Washington and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw- Mill Set WVorks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved pawland-ratchet attachment for saw-mill set-works, whereby an accurate set of the dogs and uprights may be readily effected so as to facilitate the sawing of timber to an y desired thickness.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved saw-mill set-works. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan View, and Fig. 4 is a view of one of the pawls.
Like letters designate like parts in the several views.
A is the set-beam, B one'of the racks for moving said beam, and O a pinion for actuating the rack. On the pinion-shaft D are two ratchet-wheels, E F, one, as E, provided with teeth divided by quarter-inch notches, and the other wheel, as F, provided with teeth divided by eighth-inch notches.
A lever, G, is mounted on the shaft 1), and carries a pawl, H, for engaging the ratchetwheel E, and a pair of pawls, I I, for engaging the ratchet-wheel F, which is wide enough for the engagement of both. One of the pawls I I is half a tooth longer than the other, so that when both are in engagement with the ratchet-wheel F a set by sixteenths may be obtained.
K is a quadrant provided with a double series of holes, a, divided by eighths in each row, and the holes in one series alternating with those in the other series or row, so that (No model.)
by means of a removable pin, I), inserted in one of the holes a,thc throw of the lever G can be limited to correspond with a set by eighths or sixteenths, as required.
The pawl H is connected by a chain or rod, L, to a handle, M, at the upper end of the le ver G, and is provided on one side with a pin or lug, N, that extends beneath the pawls I I when the latter are thrown forward.
On a pin or stud, 0, attached to the rear side of the quadrant-frame, or to some other suitable support, are pivoted a pair of pawls, P P, for holding the ratchet-wheel F from giving back, one of said pawls being half atooth longer than the other. An angle-lever, Q, is hung on the same pin with the pawls P P, and is provided on one side with a lug, 0, that projects beneath said pawls for the purpose of lifting them when required. To the upper end of this angle-lever is attached a curved arm, R, which extends forward, above, and in proximity to the pawl H, so as to be raised by the latter when the handle M is turned.
It will be seen that by turning the handle M so as to raise the pawl H the pawls II and I? P will also be lifted out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel F, so that by moving the lever G the set-beam, dogs, and uprights will be set back.
In sawing timber to a thickness set by even fourth-inches the pawls I I can be thrown back out of engagement with the ratchetwheel F, thereby avoiding wear of the pawls and ratchet-teeth. If a set by eighths is required, one pawl I is swung forward to engage with the ratchet-wheel F; and to set by sixteenths, both pawls I I are used. An accurate set to varying degrees of thickness, as required in the lumber to be sawed, is thus readily ob tained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a saw-mill set-works, the combination of the shaft D, ratchet wheels E F mounted thereon, lever G, carrying pawls I I of unequal length for engaging the ratchet-wheel F, and a pawl, H, for engaging the ratchet-wheel E, said pawl being provided with a lug, N, In testimony whereof Iaflix my signature in IQ for raising the pawls I I, the pawls P P, pivpresence of two witnesses;
oted to a, support at the rear of the ratchetwheel F and adapted to engage therewith, and the angle-lever Q, hung on the same pivot DENNIS LANE.
with and provided with a lug, c, for raising Witnesses: said pawls, and carrying a curved arm, R, LILLIAN D. SLACK, that extends above the pawl H, in position to GEO, W. WING.
be raised thereby, substantially as'deseribed.
