UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM D. HALL, OF BELOIT, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN FOSTER &

SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,127, dated May 5, 1885. Application filed February 6, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM D. HALL, of Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that class of shoes having pieces of elastic material in the sides; and the object of the invention is to provide means for holding the top of the shoe snugly against the leg.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be herein- I 5 after fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved shoe closed, Fig. 2 is a side View of the same opened.
The shoe A is provided with the elastic pieces or gores B in the sides, and the front and back of the shoe are extended above the top of the elastics, and on the front extension, 0, two side flaps, D, are formed, which can be folded against the sides of the leg and over the back extension, E, one flap D having a stud, F, on its free end, the other a clasp or catch, G.
In place of the stud and clasp any other fasteningsuch as a button, &c.-may be used. A 100p, H,'is secured on the upper end of the 35 rear extension, E.
After the foot has been passed into the shoe the flaps D are folded against the legs and their free. ends are united, thus effectually closing the upper end of the shoe. The lower parts of the flaps D overlap the upper parts 0 of the rubber pieces or gores B.
I am aware that a congress gaiter has been provided with lapels for protecting the elastic gores, and these lapels were held down over the gores mainly by seaming them in at the bottom with the gores. This seaming in of thelapel necessitated the lowering of the counter foxing one half inch and the enlarging of the heel a quarter of an inch. In my invention the side flaps are simply extensions of the upper part of the front, and do not interfere with the operation of the ordinary congress gaiter in the slightest, as they do not extend down to, and are not seamed in at the bottom of the gores.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a congress gaiter having its front and back extended upward, the flaps D, formed on or secured to said front extension with their lower edges disconnected from the gaiter or its gore, and a fastening, as at F G, for securing the rear edges of the flaps, substantially as 6 set forth.
