Description

(No Model.) S
J. 0. AWALT.- BOOT OR SHOE BRACE- No. 316,930. Patented May 5, 1885.
NA/ E- w WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEssEE o. AWALT, or STEWARDS MILLS, TEXAS.
BOOT OR SHOE BRAOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,930, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed February 17, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J EssEE O. AWALT, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Stewards Mills, in the county of Freestone and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boot and Shoe Braces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a brace adapted to be applied to boots and shoes, and is designed as a brace for the counter, heel, and instep; and it has for its object to provide a brace for the purposes mentioned which shall be simple in its construction, one that may be readily 1 and easily applied, and manufactured and supplied at a slight cost.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the combination, with a boot or shoe, of a brace located upon the under side of the instep, and adapted to bear against and be secured to the counter of the shoe.
The invention further consists in the details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe, showing my improved brace applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the brace detached, and Fig. 3 isasection through oone of the counters on the line a: w of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the shoe, which is of the usual construction.
3 5 B represents the brace, which may be cast, or, if desired, it may be constructed of wrought metal bent to the proper shape. The said brace B consists of a body portion, 0, having a hole or opening for the passage of a screw or other suitable fastening for its attachment to the instep of the shoe adjacent to the heel thereof. The said body portion Chas formed integral therewith,at each end thereof, an arm, D, said arms D being curved rearwardly and having flattened ends I), which bear against 5 the counter of the boot or shoe. The flattened heads of the arms .D are provided with holes or openings 0 for the passage of rivets d, which rivets pass through the counter of the shoe, andthus secure the arms firmly in place.
By the employment of this brace all liability of the counter to become worn or broken down is avoided, and it is effectually supported. The brace, passing under the instep, serves to hold and support the same, while the heel is braced by the body portion 0 and the arms D, which bear against the same at their point of junction with said body portion.
The before-described brace may be manu factured and supplied at a slight cost. It is readily and easily applied, effective in its op-' eration, and strong and durable.
Having fully described my invention lwhat I'claim as new, and desire to secure ters Patent, is
The herein-described boot and shoe br comprising a body portion, 0, having th tegral rearwardly-curved arms D,havingh b, provided with holes or openings, said b being adapted to be applied to the exterior of '7 the shoe in a manner substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JESSEE O. AWALT.
