Description

Feb. 2, 1965 J. v. WINSLOW HAND FIRE EXTINGUISHER Filed March 15, 1963 INVENTOR. iii/1w K Wow/M4 2m? 6 fir/Ir United States Patent Ofifice 3,168,248 Patented Feb. 2, 1965 3,168,248 HAND FIRE EXTINGUISHER James V. Winslow, Rte. 2, Box 229, Waukesha, Wis. Filed Mar. 15, 1963, Ser. No. 265,437 7 Claims. (Cl. 139-195) This invention relates to fire extinguishers and has particular relation to a hand-held extinguisher.
One purpose of the invention is to provide a compact, readily accessible extinguisher employing water as an extinguishing agent.
Another purpose is to provide an extinguisher of maximum compactness which may nonetheless be employed at points remote from the source of extinguishing fluid.
Another purpose is to provide a hand fire extinguisher of maximum economy in manufacture.
Another purpose is to provide an attractively-packaged extinguisher.
Another purpose is to provide a hand fire extinguisher which may be connected to household sources of extinguishing fluid, such as water.
Other purposes will appear from time to time during the course of the specification and claims.
The invention is illustrated more or less diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevation;
FIGURE 2 is a side elevation in partial cross section and on an enlarged scale; and
FIGURE 3 is a side elevation on the scale of FIG- URE l and illustrating the invention in use.
Like parts are indicated by like numerals throughout the specification and drawings.
Referring now to the drawings, and particularly to FIGURE 1, the numeral 1 designates a housing. The housing 1 has a main housing portion 2 and a nozzle cap 3.
As may be best seen in FIGURE 2, the portion 1 has an upper frusto conical portion 4 with an open, outwardly threaded upper end portion 5. The cap 3 has an inwardly threaded open bottom end indicated at 6 for engagement with the threaded portion 5. The nozzle cap 3, also generally frusto-conical, has a central continuing nozzle end portion 7 through which the reduced nozzle passage or orifice 8 extendsfor communication with the chamber area A within housing 1.
A hose fitting 9 has agenerally circular flange 10 clamped between cap 3 and housing portion 5. A bushing 11 extends inwardly of housing portion 4 from the flange 10 and a passage 12 extends axially through bushing 11 for communication with chamber A. Secured to the bushing 11 for communication with the passage 12 is an elongated flexible hose 13. The hose 13 is folded in a plurality of convolutions within the housing portion 4.
The housing 1 has a lower generally frusto-c-onical portion 15 with a lower open end 16 in which a snap fitting 17 engages. The fitting 17 is carried by a connector 18 to which the lower end of hose 13 is secured, as indicated generally at 19. The hose 13 may be secured to the neck of connector 18 by a wire clamp 20, the opposite end of hose 13 being secured to bushing 11 by a similar wire clamp 21.
While the structure of the invention may be formed of a variety of materials without departing from the nature and scope of the invention, it has been found convenient to form the housing 1, cap 3 and fitting 9 of plastic material. Similarly, the hose 13 may be formed of relatively thin plastic to provide for a maximum length of hose folded in a generally flat cross-sectional configuration within the housing 1. The connector 18 may conveniently be formed of rubberlike material. The device of the invention thus formed is light in weight and economical in manufacture.
Referring now to FIGURE 3, the connector 18 is shown as frictionally engaged with the outlet end of a faucet 25. The housing 1 has been snapped out of engagement with the fitting 17 and a major portion of the hose 13 has been drawn out of the housing 1. With water emanating from faucet 25, the same passes through the hose 13 into the chamber A between fitting 9 and outlet nozzle 7 from whence the fluid passes through the restricted nozzle orifice 8 for direction upon the fire. The housing 1 is held in the users hand. By employing a hose of relatively thin plastic material it has been found possible to fit within a housing 1 of approximately. 5 inches in length and 2 inches at its major diameter a hose approximating 25 feet in length. A hose of such thin plastic may be flattened into ribbonlike form for folding within the housing 1 and may yet expand into tubular form, as illustrated in FIGURE 3, upon the flow of fluid therethrough.
After use, the connector fitting 18 is simply removed from outlet 25, the hose 13 is drained of any remaining fluid therein and the hose 13 is folded upon itself within housing 1 as indicated in FIGURE 2. When the hose 13 has been fully folded within housing 1, the fitting 17, carried by the connector 18, is then strapped into place within the lower open end of housing portion 15 and the extinguisher is ready for use, the connector 18 serving as a suitable stand for the extinguisher at a convenient point adjacent a suitable water outlet. Thus is provided a useful kitchen accessory, for example. Should a fire occur which is extinguishable by the employment of water, it is only necessary that the user snap the connector 18 into engagement with the readily available kitchen faucet, grasp the housing 1 and pull it from the fitting 17 and move the extinguisher to the location of the fire. With the water turned on at the faucet a spray of water will be forcibly delivered from the orifice 8 onto the fire. While reference is made to a kitchen accessory, it will be understood that the Structure of the invention may be employed at a variety of locations wherever a water outlet may be found.
The structure of the invention provides an attractive appearing, extremely compact appearance, requiring a minimum employment of space in storage and sufiiciently attractive to be stored in the open where it remains readily available at hand. Employment of fitting 9 and removable cap 3 provides a plenum chamebr A and permits of ease in disassembly and cleaning.
Whereas there has been shown and described an operative form of the invention, it should be understood that this showing and description are to be taken in an illustrative or diagrammatic sense only. There are many modifications in and to the invention which will be apparent to those skilled in the art and which will fall within the scope and spirit of the invention. The scope of the invention should, therefore, be limited only by the scope of the hereinafter appended claims.
