As shown in this patent, the aperture has-a recessed areasurrounding' it which has adepth equal to the thickness of the adhesive sheet mounted therein so that the adhesive sheet and the film combined do not protrude beyond either plane surface of the card. The adhesive sheet is mounted in the recessed area and the central portion thereof is diecut out so that there remains a narrow marginal edge of adhesive sheet protruding into the card structure. A section of film cut to the exact dimensions of the card aperture is then mounted against this adhesive margin and retained therein. 'Since these cards are used in great bulk, automatic apparatuses have been designed to produce them. U.S. Patent No. 2,666,543 issued to Standish is one such machine. In many instances, however, it is necessary to produce just one card at a time and'such automatic machines are not 'useable for this purpose. This invention is directed to such an apparatus to produce a single card at a time. Additionally it was found that the apparatus for cuttingand mounting the adhesive sheet required heavy equipment wherein the die members were finely machined and finely aligned. This invention is also directed to avoiding thenecessity of such accurate alignment of the various parts.
One object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus of the above character which is simple in construction, light in'weight and capable of either automatic or hand operation. 7
Another object is to provide an apparatus of the above character wherein the cutting members are mounted in a novel manner. 1
Another-object is to provide a novel apparatus of the above character wherein the cutting, .mounting and die cutting of each adhesive sheet is accomplished in a single downward stroke of a die member.
Another object'is to provide a novel apparatus for die ing out a central portion of a sheet of material.
Another object is to provide a novel method for preparing an individual apertured card to receive a film section or other record carrying material.
A still further object is to provide a novel and useful semi-finished article which-can be used to receive and retain a section "of film or other record carrying material.
In the drawings there is shown in'FlG. l a statistical card ill of the well known type having an aperture 11 and a recessed area 12 surrounding said aperture. An adhesive sheet 13 is mounted inthe recess 12. Sheet 13 has an aperture 14 which isof smaller dimensions than the aperture 11 sothat a narrow marginal area of the adhesive sheet 13 extends into aperture 11 and serves as a "inafiter. A card holding means and lower'cut'ting knife backing sheet for a film portion which ismounted in aperture ll'and against this adhesive marginal area.
The severing and mounting apparatus comprises a base 17 and an upwardly extending punch support 18 suitably secured thereto. A resiliently mounted multiple blade lower die is mounted to the base 17. A more complete description of this lower die structure will be given herestructure Zil is mounted above the lower die. This structure comprises a plate 21 having an aperture larger than the cutting surface of lower die It? and having the same cross-sectional dimensions as the card aperture 11 and is retained in registry therewith. Secured to the upper surface of plate 21 are a pair of spaced apart and longitudinally extending cutting blades 22 which are spaced apart a distance equal to the length of the recessed area 12 as more clearly shown in FIG. 3. The upper surface of plate 21 is recessed adjacent the aperture therein a sufricient depthto receive the thickness of a card ltl and thereby forming a slot 23. Plate 21 and knives 22, are secured together. Plate 21 is retained in a spaced apart'position from die 19 by bolts Zdsecured to base 17 and having their head portions slidably received through the plate at each corner. Each bolt has an enlarged head so that it cannot understood, however, that the drawings are for the purbe withdrawn. Springs 25 are telescopically mounted over each bolt and are slightly compressed between plate 21 and base 17 whereby the plate and cutting blades 22 are retained away from die 19' A pair of upper blades 28 are pivotally mounted at one end to the support 18 and horizontally spaced apart so that the distance from one outside surface to the other is the same as the distance between the inside walls of the blades 22. Blades 28 are urged outwardly away from each other and into cutting relationship to the blades 22- by the spring 29 mounted between blades 28 as shown more clearly in FIG. 5. A portion. of the outer side surfaces of blades 28 are always confined between blades '22 so that as blades 28 are pivotally lowereda scissor-type action occurs between the two sets of blades and the upper blades 28 are constantly urged into tight cutting relationship with the blades 22.
Positioned above blades 28 are a pairof arms 31) pivotally mounted at one end to the support 1%. The other end of arms 3i) straddle the lower end of a punch shaft 31 which is slidably mounted in the support 13. Each forward end of arms 3-0 has an elongated slot 32 which loosely receives the ends of a pin 33 which extends horizontally through the lower'end of the shaft. In this manner the downward movement of shaft 31 carries'with it the forward ends of arms 30. Arms 30 and blades 28 sisters 3 are resiliently secured together and at the same time retained in a spaced apart position by thefollowing mechanism. A shaft 34 extends between blades 28 and a parallel shaft 35 extends between arms 30. A pin 36 extends through shaft 34 and is secured thereto and its head portion slidably extends through shaft 35. An enlarged head on pin 36 prevents it from becoming disconnected from shaft 35. A spring 37 is telescopically mounted over pin 36 between shafts 34 and 35 and is retained under slight compression to retain blades 28 and arms 30 in spaced apart relationship.
Mounted to the lower end of punch shaft 31 is a punch 46 having a concave surface 41 and a cutting edge 4-2 having the same dimensions as the aperture 14 in the adhesive sheet.- Punch also has two parallel downwardly depending shoulders 43 which have a length equal to the spacing of the blades 28.
The die 19 is best shown in FIGS. 2 and 4 and comprises a frame having an aperture 51 and transverse spring recesses 52 opening into the walls of the aperture. Die 19 comprises four blades 53, each of which has its upper cutting corner removed as shown at 54. Blades 53 are mounted about die portion 55 and are urged into contact with each other by springs 56 which are retained in recesses 52. Thus as the cutting edge42 of punch 46 is moved into contact with die 19, the corners thereof will first strike the cut away corners 54 of the blades 53 and sever the intervening adhesive sheet beginning at each corner as the downwardly moving punch 40 pushes blades 53 away from each other. A pair of springs 58 each having one end secured .to the support 18 and the other to one of the arms 30, retain the punch 40 and the upper cutting blades 28 in their uppermost position. The
.downward movement of plate 21 and lower blades 22 is limited by the contact of the lower surface of the plate and the upper surface of die frame 50.
The adhesive sheet 13 is severed from an endless strip of adhesive material which is commercially available in rolls in which the adhesive surface is covered with a glassine protecting strip. The roll of glassine covered adhesive strip material 60 is rotatable, supported in a frame 61 which, in turn, is suitably secured to the base 17 and adjacent the die 19. A glassine stripping roll 62 is freely rotatably mounted forward of the roll of adhesive material 60. Idler rolls 63 and 64 are rotatably mounted on the frame and are in circumferential contact with the separating roll 62.
In operation the strip 60 of adhesive material is threaded around the idler roll 63 and over the roll 62 where the glassine is separated from the adhesive sheet. The stripped adhesive sheet is extended over the cutting surfaces of lower blades 22. A guide 65 extends upwardly adjacent one of the blades 22 and serves to correctly position the strip over said blades. After the strip is positioned over the blades 22, a card is positioned in slot 23 with its aperture in register with aperture in plate 21 and the punch 40 is lowered by the application of pressure to the top of shaft 31. As shaft 31 moves downward it carries with it arms 30 and blades 28 with the same spacing maintained because of spring 37. In this manner blades 28 are pivotally carried into telescopic relation with blades 22 thus severing the strip in two places. Strip 60 has a width equal to the width of the recessed area 12 in card 10 so that the severed section 13 of strip 69 has the same length and width as said recessed area. The severed section 13 is carried into engagement with the card 10 by blades 28. Blades 28 continue their downward movement and the lower surfaces thereof press the two out edges of the adhesive sheet 13 into contact with the card 10 while at the same time overcoming the resistance of spring 25 thus causing the card support plate 21 to be depressed until its bottom surface is in contact with the upper surface of the die frame 50. Up to this point the punch 40 has maintained its relative position to blades 28- but upon continued downward movement of shaft 31, the resistance of spring 37 is overcome and punch 40 advances downwardly in relation to blades 28 causing the cutting edges 42 of the punch 49 to engage and cut out the central portion of adhesive sheet 13 in co-operation with the die 19. The punch 46 continues downwardly into die 19 until the shoulders 43 contact the other two parallel edges of sheet 13 and press these edges into contact with the card. Upon the release of pressure on shaft 31 the springs 58 return the shaft together with the punch 40 and blades 23 to their uppermost position. At the same time springs 25, which have been compressed by the downward movement of plate 21, push said plate and blades 22 to their uppermost vertical position and at the same time strip the card 10 from the die members 53.
Although the present invention is disclosed in the embodiment of a hand operated apparatus, it is to be expressly understood that the invention is not limited to said embodiment. Such an apparatus may be equally well embodied in an automatically operated combination and the dimensions and relative movement of the various parts may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. For a definition of the limits of the invention, reference is had primarily to the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. Apparatus of the character described comprising a first die and a second die mounted in spaced apart relation to each other, a card support mounted between said die members for reciprocal movement toward and away from 7 said second die, a blade member operatively positioned in relation to saidfirst die and mounted for reciprocal movement past said first die, a punch telescopically mounted within said blade and movable through said blade and into operative position with said second die.
2. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein a portion of said card support is positioned in the path of movement of said blade and wherein said blade and said punch are resiliently retained in a spaced apart relation whereby the downward movement of said punch will move said blade beyond the first die and into contact with said card support and increased pressure on said punch will carry said blade and card support downwardly as the force retaining said blade and punch in spaced relationship is overcome thus permitting said punch to advance through said blade and into operative relationship with said second I die.

Apparatus as defined in claim 1 Where said first die comprises parallel spaced apart members each having cutting edges and said blade comprises a pair of members having means for resiliently urging each outwardly from each other in spaced apart relation and wherein said blade members are mounted for movement between said first die members with at least a portion of each of said blade members constantly in contact with said first die members.
4. Apparatus as defined in claim 3 wherein a portion of said card support is in the path of movement of said blade members wherein a sheet severed between said first die and said blade is pressed against a card in said support and the central portion of said sheet is cut out.
5. An apparatus for severing a section from an endless strip of material and mounting the same on a card comprising a first die and a second die mounted in spaced apart relation, a support for a card resiliently mounted between said die members, means to position a portion of said endless strip over said first die, means operatively associated with said first die for severing a section from said strip and for mounting the same on said card, means to press said section onto said card as said severing means moves the card support toward said second die, and punch means operatively associated with said second die and movable with said card support whereby when said support has reached the limit of its movement toward said second die, said punch is operatively engaged with said second die. 7

An apparatus for severing sections from an endless apart relation, a support for a card mounted for move-' ment toward and away from the second die, means to position a portion of said endless strip over said first die, means operatively associated with said first die for severing a section from said strip and moving the same into contact with said card, means for dieing out the central portion of said section and mounted for movement into operative contact with said second die whereby said section is pressed onto the surface of said card and the central portion or" said section is cut out.

Apparatus as defined in claim 6 wherein said dieing out means comprises a punch member and said second die comprises a plurality of die members each having a cutting surface and arranged in complementary shape to said punch and mounted for longitudinal movement whereby when said punch contacts said die the members thereol are resiliently moved outwardly away from each other.
8. Apparatus as defined in claim 7 wherein each marginal cutting edge of the punch is concavely shaped and the corners of each of the die members have a tapering surface wherein the corners of said punch first contact said tapering surfaces and thereafter contact said cutting surfaces.
9. In an apparatus for severing sections from an endless strip of material and mounting the same on a card the combination of a first die and a second die mounted in spaced apart relation, a support for a card mounted for movement toward and away from said second die, means to position a portion of said endless strip over said first die, means operatively associated with said first die for severing a section from said strip and moving the same into contact with said card, means for dieing out the central portion of said section, means for pressing the marginal edges of said section onto a surface of said card, means to actuate said dieing out means whereby the dieing out means is advanced to operative relationship with said second die and said marginal edge pressing means is actuated simultaneously therewith.

Apparatus as defined in claim 9 wherein said dieing out means comprises a punch member having each cutting edge of a concave shape and said second die comprising a plurality of die members each having a convexly shaped cutting surface and resiliently urged toward each other to form a complementary cutting surface for said punch.
11. The method of severing a section from an endless strip of material and mounting the same on a card having an aperture therein comprising the steps of positioning the apertured portion of said card between oppositely mounted first and second die means, positioning a portion of said endless strip over said first die, severing a portion of said strip having a width and length generally larger than the width and length of the aperture in said card and mounting the same over said aperture, pressing two opposite edges of said severed portion to the surface of said card and simultaneously therewith cutting out the central portion of said severed portion and there- 6 after pressing the other two opposite edge portions of said severed portion onto the surface of said card.

The method of severing a section from an endless strip of material and mounting the same on a card having an aperture therein comprising the steps of positioning the apertured portion of said card between oppositely mounted first and second die means, positioning a portion of said endless strip over said first die, severing a portion of said strip having a width and length generally greater than the width and length of the aperture in said card, mounting said severed portion over said aperture, pressing two opposite edges of said severed strip to the surface of said card and simultaneously therewith moving said severed strip and card downwardly and into contact with said second die means whereby the central area of said severed portion is died out, and thereafter pressing the other two opposite edge portions of said severed portion onto the surface of said card.

In an apparatus for severing sections from a strip of material and mounting the same on a card, the combination of a first die and a second die mounted in spaced apart relation, a card support resiliently mounted between said dies, a first means operatively associated with said first die for transversely cutting said strip at two spaced apart locations and moving said out section into contact with .the card, a second means for dieing out the central portion of said cut section, means to move said first means and said card support toward the second die while pressing the transversely cut edges of said section to said card and to simultaneously move said second means into operative relationship with said second die to cut out the central portion of said section.
'14. Apparatus as defined in claim 13 comprising means operatively associated with said second means for pressing the other edges of said section to the card and operative only after said second means has cut the central portion from said section.
15. In an apparatus for severing sections from a strip ,of material and mounting the same on a card, the combination of a first die and a second die mounted in a spaced apart relation, a card support resiliently mounted between said dies, a first means operatively associated with said first die for severing a section from said strip, means for positioning said strip between said first die and said first means, a second means mounted for movement into operative position with said second die for dieing out the central portion of said severed section, said second means being resiliently retained in a spaced apart relation to said first means whereby the downward movement of said second means will move said first means to sever a section from said strip and move the same into contact with said card and increased pressure on said second means will carry said first means and said card support downward-1y as the force retaining said first and second means in spaced relationship is overcome thus permitting said second means to advance into operative relationship with said second die.

Claims (1)

11. THE METHOD OF SEVERING A SECTION FROM AN ENDLESS STRIP OF MATERIAL AND MOUNTING THE SAME ON A CARD HAVING AN APERTURE THEREIN COMPRISING THE STEPS OF POSITIONING THE APERTURED PORTION OF SAID CARD BETWEEN OPPOSITELY MOUNTED FIRST AND SECOND DIE MEANS, POSITIONING A PORTION OF SAID ENDLESS STRIP OVER SAID FIRST DIE, SEVERING A PORTION OF SAID STRIP HAVING A WIDTH AND LENGTH GENERALLY LARGER THAN THE WIDTH AND LENGTH OF THE APERTURE IN SAID CARD AND MOUNTING THE SAME OVER SAID APERTURE, PRESSING TWO OPPOSITES EDGES OF SAID SEVERED PORTION TO THE SURFACE OF SAID CARD AND SIMULTANEOUSLY THEREWITH CUTTING OUT THE CENTRAL PORTION OF SAID SEVERED PORTION AND THEREAFTER PRESSING THE OTHER TWO OPPOSITE EDGE PORTIONS OF SAID SEVERED PORTION ONTO THE SURFACE OF SAID CARD.
