Description

Nov. 17, 1964 S. BOHN HANDLE CONSTRUCTION Filed Oct. 29, 1962 INVENToR.
Samuel Bohn ATTORNEY United States Patent O m 3,156,944 HANDLE CONSTRUCTON Samuel Bohn, '606 Crescent Ave., Plainfield, NJ. Filed ct. 29, 1982, Ser. No. 233,731 3 Claims. (Ci. ltd- 111) This invention relates in general to a handle construction, and more specifically to a handle construction for use on sliding doors, drawer fronts, and the like.
Heretofore, handles for sliding doors, drawer fronts and the like, often consisted of a handle construction of the type disclosed by a Keeler Patent No. 1,947,942 which is secured to a supporting surface by a pair of studs that are maintained in fixed relationship to one another. These studs are arranged to be inserted into a pair of holes formed in a supporting surface which are spaced apart at a distance equal to the spacing between studs. For this reason the use of such handle construction had only limited application; since their use is determined by the gauge or distance of the mounting holes in the door or drawer front for the various tyes of frame construction. Consequently handle constructions of the pull type described had to be stocked in various sizes to fit the gauge distance of the various non-standardized articles. ri`his necessitated large inventories and the stocking of many different and odd sizes and shapes of handle constructions of the type described.
Therefore, an object of this invention is to overcome the disadvantages of the handle constructions of the pull type described by providing an improved handle construction which can be readily adapted to door or drawer fronts regardless of the spacing or gauge of the mounting holes therein.
Another object is to provide an improved handle construction which is relatively simple in construction, can be easily fabricated to any desired length, and which is positive in operation.
Another object is to provide an improved handle construction which is pleasing in appearance, and which handle construction can be firmly secured in place with a minimum effort.
A feature of this invention resides in the provision that the handle construction in accordance with this invention may be extruded or made to any length desired, and which can be readily secured to a frame structure or supporting surface havin's any hole spacing which is less than the length of the handle.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent when considered in View of the drawings and description in whichz' FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the handle construe tion of this invention illustrated partly in section and as applied to a supporting surface or frame.
FIG. 2 is a plan View of the handle construction have ing parts shown in section.
FIG. 3 is a detail front view of the handle construction.
FIG. tion.
FIG.
4 is a detail rear View of the handle construc- 5 is a detail view of the mounting plug.
FIG. 6 is a plan View of the mounting plug, and
FlG. 7 is a detail bottom view of the mounting plug.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown in FIGS. 1 to 4 the handle construction 1l) of this invention. As shown it comprises an elongated angled-like member 11 having a pair of leg portions disposed at substantially right angles with respect to one another. in the illustrated embodiment the horizontally disposed leg portion 11A is made somewhat longer than the vertical leg portion 11B; however, the latter is made slightly thicker than the frame. It will be understood that the size and dimensions are not considered critical. Connected along 35155344 Patented Nov. 17, 1964 ICC the free longitudinal edge of the horizontal leg portion 11A is an enlarged hand grasping or gripping portion 12; and it extends substantially coextensively with the length of the handle l1.
ln accordance with this invention a T-shaped slot or channel 13 is formed in the vertically disposed leg portion 11B of the handle. It will be noted that the cross head portion 13A of the T slot 13 is vertically disposed, and that the stern portion 13B of the slot 13 is open to the rear of the handle. As shown in FIGS. 2 to 4, the slot or channel 13 extends the length of the handle.
Mounting of the handle to a suitable supporting surface, door or drawer front 14 or the like is attained by a pair of mounting plugs 15. Each of the mounting plugs 15 comprises a shank 15A having an enlarged or flanged head end 15B which is adapted to be received in the crosshead portion 13A of the T slot 13 with the shank portion 15A thereof projecting to the rear of the handle through the stem portion 13B of the slot 13.
With the arrangement described the mounted plugs 15 are retained within the slot 13, yet rendered readily adjustable along the length thereof. Thus the respective mounting plugs 1S may be spaced to accommodate any spacing between mounting holes 16 which are formed in the supporting surface door or drawer front 14 for receiving `the shank 15A of the plugs. As shown in FIG. 2, the holes le in the supporting surface 14 are made slightly longer than that of the shank 15A. j
Each of the plugs 15 is provided with a tapped or threaded bore 17 for receiving a screw fastener 18 or the like. Thus Ito secure the handle 10 to a supporting surface 14, the mounting plugs 15 are adjusted to the spacing of the holes 16, and then inserted into the holes 16 in the frame structure 14 aligned therewith. The screws 1S are then threaded into the bore 17 of the rcspective plugs 15 from the other side of the supporting surface 14. By tightening the screws 18 the head or flange 15B of the plugs 15 are drawn tight against the shoulders 19 of the handle, thus keeping the handle 1t) held tightly against the supporting surface, door front or the like 14.
The construction of the handle 1lb described can be readily fabricated by the continuous extrusion of either a plastic or metal material wherein the various size handle lengths can be cut to any given size. Consequently very little if any machining of the parts is required. The plugs 15 can be readily positioned in place in the 'l' slot of the handle. From the foregoing it will be readily apparent that the various size handles may be formed with a minimum of effort, and that a given handle size may be readily adapted to any frame structure irrespective of the spacing between the mounting holes therein, as the mounting plugs are rendered readily adjustable within the slot.
While the instant invention has been disclosed with reference to a particular embodiment thereof, it is to be appreciated that the invention is not to be taken as limited to all of the details thereof as modiiications and variations thereof may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
