ARRANGEMENT OF CARRIAGE-SPRINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,560, dated February 26, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. ROUGHTON, of Frostburg, 1n the county of Allegany and 'w btate of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 111 Sprmgs for Carriages and other Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing and arranging vehicle springs in the manner hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings Figure 1 represents a side view of buggy body with springs attached. Fig. 2 is an end or back view of same.
In the figures A represents the body of the vehicle; B, B, the heads blocks and C, the connecting shaft or bar between them.
a, a, represent two rods which are secured perpendicularly to the head blocks near the ends of eachthe head blocks being between the rods and also between two plates 0, 0, which secure the rods, as well as the springs to the head blocks.
To the four corners of the vehicle are secured the projecting bars (Z, (Z, which rest upon the springs and which are provided with holes through which the rods (4, a, pass.
E, represents a band of metal which passes over the springs as seen in Fig. 2 the upper ends of the rods passing through and being attached securely to said band.
H, H, represent the springs which are formed by taking a straight piece of steel and bending it until its two ends touch. These ends are then caught under the plate 0, and are there secured by bolts on the lower ends of the rods a, a, or otherwise if desired. The tension of this spring may be increased by duplication as seen in Fig. 2, where two pieces are used. More may be used if neces sary. The bars (Z, (Z, press upon the top of the outer spring in the manner shown'said bars being allowed to slide freely over the rods a, a. Springs may be used between the bars (Z, (Z, and the band E, to prevent the body of the vehicle from jumping up when passing over obstructions. In this manner a very cheap and easily constructed spring may be used and the four corners of the body of the vehicle will be supported alike.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The employment of the bars (Z, cl, the rods (4, a, and the band E, arranged in the manner represented for the purpose of holding the body of the vehicle in position, and for shielding, and protecting the springs from strain substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the springs H H with the bars (Z, (Z, rods a, a, band E, and plates 0, 0, the several parts being used as and for the purpose specified.
