Description

Oct. 13, 1964 ElGl HIROGUCHI 3,152,440
SWIVEL Filed July 11. 1961 INVENTOR Hm'osdm/ United States Patent 3,152,440 SWIVEL Eigi Hiroguchi, 353 Banchi Iriya-cho, Daito-ku, Tokyo, Japan Filed July 11, 1961, Ser. No. 123,288 2 Claims. (Cl. 59-95) This invention relates to a swivel, and more particularly to a swivel having a construction and arrangement so that when engaging the swivel with a body to be loaded, the tip end of a segmental ring of the swivel is simply released from an engaging groove of a protective member so as to release the tip end of the segmental ring, and the engage ment and disengagement of the segmental ring are effected easily, and also when the tip end of the segmental ring is engaged in the groove of the protective member, an engaged state of the segmental ring for the protective member is maintained safely without causing any alteration.
This invention has for its object to provide a swivel wherein a coil spring around an upper straight line part of the hooked rod, acting against a connecting head on one end of the straight line part and a flange formed in the protective member, is enclosed in a vertical bore in the protective member without exposing it to the outside, whereby an appearance of the swivel is kept of good style and is in good order.
In order to facilitate the understanding of this invention, it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which;
FIG. 1 is a side view taken partly in section of a swivel in accordance with this invention, showing a protective member in section and in an engaged state with the tip end of a segmental ring.
FIG. 2 is a sectional view taken on a vertical center line of the swivel of FIG. 1, showing the protective memer and the segmental ring in section.
FIG. 3 is an end view of the swivel of FIG. 1, showing the protective member in section and a state of the segmental member when it is turned for 90 degrees by disengaging the segmental ring from a groove in the protective member.
In the drawings, 1 shows a hooked rod forming a segmental ring 5 of a swivel according to this invention. This swivel has at its one end a straight line part 2, and a connecting head 3 is fixed by means of a pin 4 to the tip end of the straight line part 2. The hooked rod 1 is bent as shown by 7 approximately at a right angle from another end of the straight line part 2 and then is further bent to form the segmental ring 5. The tip end 6 of the segmental ring 5 is positioned opposite the bent part 7.
The straight line part 2 of the hooked rod 1 is rotatably and slidably enclosed within a vertical bore 9 formed in a protective member 8. At the lower end of the vertical opening 9, a receiving flange 10 is formed integrally with the protective member 8. A coil spring 11 is inserted and compressed between the connecting head 3 and the receiving flange 10 and is further compressed downwardly when the segmental ring 5 is pulled downward.
The protective member 8 has formed at its lower end with a recessed engaging groove 12 so as to leave flanges 13, 14 at its periphery. The tip end 6 of the segmental ring 5 is adapted to be inserted in the recessed groove 12 3,152,440 Patented Oct. 13, 1964 together with a portion 5' near the bent part 7 of the hooked rod 1. Instead of forming the flange 13 and 14 integrally with the protective member 8, separate flanges 13 and 14 may be attached respectively on outer surfaces of the protective member 8 so as to cover the tip end 6 of the segmental ring 5 and the part 5' of the hooked rod 1.
A hole 15 is formed in the connecting head 3 to receive the connecting rod 16, and a chain or a cord 17 is attached to the connecting ring 16.
In the case of assembling the parts of this swivel, the coil spring 11 is firstly inserted into the vertical bore 9 in the protective member 8 and then the straight line part 2 of the hooked rod 1 is inserted from the lower end of the protective member 8 through the vertical bore 9. To the tip end of the straight line part 2, the connecting head 3 is fixed by means of the pin 4, compressing the coil spring 11 so as to retain it under a slight compressed state.
While there has been described what is at present considered to be the preferred embodiments of this invention, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention.
What I claim is: 1. A swivel comprising a hook member, a protective member and a coil spring, (1) said hook member being formed of rod material and comprising (a) a hook at the lower end thereof (b) a connecting head at the upper end thereof,
(0) a vertically straight portion of said rod material extending downwardly from the connecting head toward the hook end,
(:1) a horizontally straight portion extending of said rod material connecting the vertically straight portion to the hook,
(e) said hook having its tip end spaced from the lower end of the vertically straight portion to provide a gap therebetween,
(2) said protective member having (a) a first opening extending dovsmwardly from the upper end thereof adapted to admit the enlarged connecting head of said hook member (b) a second continuing opening coaxial with the vertically straight portion of the hook member and forming a shoulder between said first and second openings,
(c) an annular flange at the lower end thereof cooperating with the hook member to provide at least one closed portion thereof, said flange comprising a portion adapted to closely embrace the upper side of said horizontally straight portion of the hook member and a portion adapted to embrace the tip end of said hook to close the gap between the tip end of the hook and the remainder of the hook member,
(d) said horizontally straight portion of the hook member being adapted to rest on the lower edge of flange in other swivel posi tions of said hook member whereupon the gap of said hook member is unencumbered,
3 4 (3) said coil spring surrounding the upper part of of the tip of said hook and the outer edge of said horithe vertically straight portion of the hook memzontally straight portion are cut away, the outer surface ber with its upper end bearing against the en of said protective member being shaped to form a sublarged head of th hook portion nd it l w r stantially continuous surface with the outer surface of d bgan'ng against h h ld fo med b 5 the hook member when the device is in its closed position.
